wow, some people are so ignorant about the care of animals! crate training is a very effective way of house training an animal, and it doesn't hurt them at all. in fact animals enjoy the cosy feeling that the crate can give them. you don't keep them in there all the time, just through the night and at times during the day when you can't be watching them as much as normal. but this doesn't even really look like they puppy is in a cage!

but let me tell you, my westie has a nice soft and comfortable bed, he is free to go wherever he wants and I assure you I have never caused damage, the respect that I give to him, makes stay in his place automatically without intrusiveness.

puppies have a den instinct and feel safe in a cage/crate which they treat as their space or "den" We brought our 10 week westie pup home and for the first few weeks e.g. when outside and he heard neighbours dogs bark he would run in to his crate as he felt safe there. Now he only goes in his crate at night he finds it is quiet and secure there and has a bed in living room through the day. (Sometimes when he wakes up in the morning he will not come out of his crate.

@misstechnicolorful If crate training is for when the owners aren't there, or can't watch them, why is it in the crate while they have a video trained on them. If their dog is bored that is barely a good sign.

@SirElspeth Oh, you can read the dog's mind? You don't know what the owners were doing, for all you know one of them may have been getting ready to leave; the puppy was being cute so they filmed it or they had guests who don’t like or are afraid of dogs, so the puppy was kept separate. Maybe the puppy LIKES it in there and was resting! Animals do rest you know. As I have said, if you notice this person’s other vids you will notice how rambunctious and loved the puppy is.

@SirElspeth PS. This looks more like a baby gate than a crate anyway. This could be separating the puppy from anything from a room with something that could harm them to a flight of stairs. A calm animal is not necessarily and unhappy one. Also, I don’t mean to sound condescending :) Just the way I write.

@3stepsuntildeath when you have puppies, you need to train them. you put them in crates when they act bad. its a way of showing that if they act bad, they have to go to the crate. it makes them act better. i am totally against animal cruelty. i volunteer at a dog shelter. but this is just one way that i train my dogs

I have 4 Westies now sibce Katie died aged 16.

Within one week(3 years ago) I got 2 Boys and 2 Girls:-Max/Sammy/Alice/Phoebe.

This afternoon after a 2 hour walk they all fell asleep and Alice slept ON TOP of her Sister,Phoebe in Phoebe's little basket with her paw around her.Within 3/4 minutes they were both asleep and though they are both 6 years old(they were "3" when I got them)Phoebe is only 7/8 Kilos which is very small.
