I've done Liquid N2 in a hopper and gotten solid paintballs, but it's impractical and doesn't last long. The gelatin capsules become so brittle I always broke one or more in the barrel.
The oil myth is mostly not true. There are some types of oil that will conflagrate under extreme pressure, but most oils used for air lines and guns is not of that type. There is also an initial heat source required for the diesel reaction, which in the case of a tank would have to be caused by filling expansion
Mike from TechPB has vids busting the frozen paint myth (freezing paint makes it more brittle, not harder) and yes an HPA tank will explode if someone is dumb enough to pu oil on/near the fill nipple, then fill it with HPA
@pntbller14 1) Frozen paintballs hit harder than regular paintballs because the fill becomes more viscous. See my Frozen Paintball Test for verification.
2) Sound theory but it hasn't been proven yet. If an expert can replicate it in a controlled environment and show the video to millions, then why not do it?
the air tank is true. frozen paintballs go soft when they cool down, so the only way to have a rock solid paintball is to take a tank of liquid nitrogen to the field. someone would notice!! 3rd the wall of paint, the paintballs leave the gun at about 280 feet per second. as they are large and round they loose momentum quickly. i doubt that it would be enough to knock someone backwards with a force to put them in hospital, though it might hurt a bit.. spam to use up character limit. ghajkdhsjdhs
@here2there4life I've seen the videos and have even conducted my own frozen paintball test after this request was made. Check it out. Its pretty insightful and puts plausibility into the myth.
@Pilotsofer Are they? I'm sure a few boxes are still floating around in circulation but I'm pretty sure they aren't made anymore. I couldn't find it on the manufacturer's website anymore.
@here2there4life that did not happen in my case. i froze like 50balls and they did not turn rockhard but they becam quite hard. i did not have anny chops or breaks neither
I'm a Pro Level Tournament Player (Naughty Dogs) & I've been "Bunkered" by opponents in tournaments multiple times in the same spot before...& yeah, I've had welts last like 4-6 months before...when I was a senior in high school, I used to get hit in the neck a lot & a ton of people would be like "nice hickey" & when you get hit really bad or at close range by a high end paintball gun, small dots of blood come out on top of the welt sometimes...
you even put it in your hopper, and the wall of paint is just a stupid thing to test, you can't be hit simultaneously (possibly you mean faster than the human reaction time) by 1,000 of anything
@assassinsrock It doesn't have to be hit simultaneously. Even a rapid stream is enough to knock people over (think water hoses). That's why Tom Kaye put the neck reinforcement in place (the what-if factor). Besides, since when it have to be realistic for Mythbusters? Perfect example is the test of swimming in water vs syrup.
tanks blowing up has happened before history proves that their have been people who put oil into the fill nipple and when they try to air it up BOOM, ok yes there is a point where you can freeze paintballs so the ppc (might need to check exactly what their using right now last time I checked it was ppc) inside will melt but by that point you only have 5 or 6 minutes before they heat up enough to turn back into a liquid, and even if it is kept a solid the shell will fall of before
@assassinsrock Yes, there are reports (as my video has shown) but why not make a video of it? A demonstration of how dangerous it can be is a great deterrent for uninformed people.
Also, frozen paintballs aren't only used in warm temps. Ever played in the winter? Paintballs fills, depending on the composition, can become very viscous and do hit harder (sometimes twice as hard) as a warm paintball.
@LordOdin2008 Im in california so no I don't get the chance to play in the snow ever, so for me its a non-issue, also you don't have to worry about it cause the shell is going to rip apart and your not gonna be hitting anything
@assassinsrock Shell brittleness is more of a problem for thinner shelled paint, whereas thicker shells are less susceptible to lower temps. Case in point, Polar Ice. Thick shell and oil-based fill that becomes more viscous. See my Frozen Paintball Test to see what I mean. I would like to note I never got a barrel break at any point during the test with either brands of paint. However, breaks are more prone when the barrel gets cold, too.
@reaper0991 You might wanna rethink that. Check out my frozen paintball test to see what I mean. Even oil-based paintballs become more viscous. Despite the shells becoming more brittle, the fill retains the kinetic energy more. So they hurt more.
i dont think it will be dangerous because when i put them in a freezer and shoot them the shell comes right off of them. if they get any more forzen then i think they will be even more brittle and un shootable
This is exactly why it should be tested. People only have ideas about what will happen because its never been done before. If there's one thing that I've learned from paintball testing is that unexpected things can happen and they happen more often than you would think.
well u say its never been done before but has anybody asked those ppl in the vid if they put some kind of oil in the fill nipple ..if they have its not a myth but it would b cool to see a video of it tho:P
well since some paintballs have oil in their paint then it wolnt freeze just ger slushy. as for the water ones who i gonna go to their field and set up this whole liquid nitrogen rig. also the colder paintballs get the more brittle the geleton shell gets ive tested this i froze some paint below 0 degrees for a few days and when i shot it the shells just sprayed. also TECHPB answers all these questions.
We're not talking about what is practical; we're talking about what is theoretical. Right now, people are only saying its impossible to freeze paintballs and that's simply not true. Drop the temperature enough and any liquid will freeze solid. They can freeze but the question remains how hard they'll be and if they'll be dangerous. Not practical but entirely possible.
And yes, I follow TechPB, in case you haven't seen me on the forums.
hence no more need for argument. yes you could flash freeze them. but no civillians have that access. and no scientist will get kicks off of shoorting innaccurate frozen paintballs at people. even so, it wouldnt even hurt that much. the big fear is stupid teenagers such as myself doing it
yes, it is possible to freeze paintballs in liquid nitrogen, not in a house hold freezer. if a paintball was flash frozen i could see it causing the shell to fracture and the centre be a solid marble, and not flying too well at all... even still, shotting it out the marker would become difficult because paintballs flex in a barrel and get smaller... so a larger barrel would have to be used.
I've seen someone do it, its like a rose dude, it still just becomes really really brittle and the paint breaks more easily than when kept at room temperature.
I'm totally with you but no one has done it yet. I just want a video to be made so that the final nail in the coffin can be set and no one can ever bring it up again without being corrected with proof.
Mike did a freezer; not liquid nitrogen. LN is not realistic or practical but we're only concerned with the theory of it. The absolute max of what is possible.
i was there, on the atlantic wall, as a german, i watched tom kaye "lead the charge" we werent allowed to shoot, at all, the photos were for publicity
ya but liquid nitrogen is so cold if you put it in the nitrogen its so cold the paint ball if you hit it wit a hammer it will just shatter we did it in science class but with a flower
u can freeze a paintball by useing liquid hydrogen it can freeze anything becuz its teprature is -300 degrees and if it can freeze alcohol it can deff freeze a paintball
idk about the first and last ones but the frozen paintballs wont work their made of oil so i dosent freeze it just makes the shell brittle so they break to easily to be shot from a gun they just break in the barrel and in the hopper while u run
frozen paintballs wont shoot, they break in the in the barrel. and i have had a co2 tank explode on me. i took it off while we were taking a break, and it was left in the sun. i don't know what happened, all i know is it shot off like a rocket.
I've seen the "diesel engine" effect before in an airgun and a CO2 gun, where the barrels were being cleaned, then fired to clear out the oil, and it ignited, but not explode, just a smoking gun that only fired air... :)
The only two that pop out in my mind with Paintball is the Nvidia Mona Lisa demonstration and the Ultimate Mythbuster standoff between Adam and Jamie. I couldn't find anything else related.
they shoulnd't do any of them because we all know that putting oil on your fill niple makes your tank explode. and we all know freezing paintballs makes for more brittle paint. and i didn't even get the third one
We only know the theory of it. No one has video of an exploding tank or has tried dipping paintballs in liquid nitrogen. And no one has certaintly tried getting shot with over 1000 paintballs all at once.
I've seen those videos and I believe them but nobody has done a test to confirm them. Even Mike said it was too dangerous to test the tank myth.
