Foxholes in the midst of war, The Holy Land during the Crusades, The first years of the Islamic expansion, Spain during the inquisition, in fact during any religious war.
Times when atheism grew include: Age of Reason, Age of Enlightenment, and any time evidence and fact took precedence over dogma and belief.

Even some Beatles sites quote it, like Beatles Unlimited, so do news sites like The Times and NY Times. The full text of the letter is in David Edwin Harrell Jr's "Oral Roberts: An American Life." After receiving the letter, Roberts sent Lennon "The Miracle of Seed Faith." Lennon then donated money to Roberts' ministry.

Lennon, like many other people in life, was a searcher. He, like some of the other Beatles, explored a number of religions in their search for "the divine". Searches as such are examples of an open mind. While some relgious types believe that one should have an unmoving belief in a deity, there are those whose lives are constantly searching for a sense of truth. They may stick with one light of thought for a while but then find it to be lacking. Again, an open mind.

Just because most websites who quote the letter are Christian doesn't mean it's fake. Many atheists simply don't want to realize how lost and confused 1 of their heroes was. Even some Beatles sites quote it, like Beatles Unlimited, so do news sites like The Times and NY Times. The full text of the letter is in David Edwin Harrell Jr's "Oral Roberts: An American Life." After receiving the letter, Roberts sent Lennon "The Miracle of Seed Faith." Lennon then donated money to Roberts' ministry.

The majority of popes look at the Position as a right to power sure they had to be members of the church but most if not all of the popes after rising to power didn't really care what the bible said or the doctrin of the churches were and would change it to match thier belifes. The fact is the Papacy is more of a dictatorship than an aspect of faith.

@bigwhammyRocks The thing you refer to as "the denial mechanism" is a far greater thing than just a mechanism, and i might add that it is the believers who in the face of overwhemling proof still believs in their deities, and that is a denying mechanism. But the fact is that the denial mechanism you are refering to are a whole philosophy known as sceptisism, and it asserts that can't prove anything exept your own existance. I don't go that far but i do question when absurd claims are made.

My advice to any Christian who is discussing the historical reliability of the Bible with a skeptic is to pause and ask the skeptic if they believe in the real possibility of a God who can intervene miraculously in the world. If they dont, you need to drop back and discuss that issue first. Otherwise, you may very well be wasting your time.

Why not tackle the actual argument? Must you avoid the actual issue of historical reliability? The interesting thing is that you would have no problem dismissing the story of mohammed's flight to heaven on a flying horse as unsubstantiated drivel, but are unable to grasp that the stories of Jesus have the same credibilty and "evidence".
As for the possibility of an interventionist god, it has the same probability as a tapdancing god, or a cookingshow god or a non-interventionist god.

We don't need to imagine very much what a world would be like without atheism. Most of human recorded history has occurred with atheists in a miniscule minority. Unlike a blossoming flower, the world filled with belief in deities was self-righteous and barbaric, sadistic, ignorant, divided and short. I don't understand this video. Imagine no Atheism? Without Atheism, everyone would just be sitting around a candle all day in log cabins praying instead of doing. Non-dickheaded atheists, such as myself, tend to conduct ourselves in a way that we feel preserves harmony for everyone and maximizes happiness. What encourages me about this approach is that it appears not only to require no religion, but it appears to be the logical conclusion to the "How should one live?" question. As for correlation, the high rate of democide compared to the instances that atheists have held power does show that it is probably not by chance that there is this correlation, but the fact that these atheists were explicitly atheistic and admitted this out in the open with the documented evidence means one can only deny the correlation if they deny the statements and documents etc of these very regimes, this is denying the historical record.

Lennon, like many other people in life, was a searcher. He, like some of the other Beatles, explored a number of religions in their search for "the divine". Searches as such are examples of an open mind. While some relgious types believe that one should have an unmoving belief in a deity, there are those whose lives are constantly searching for a sense of truth. They may stick with one light of thought for a while but then find it to be lacking. Again, an open mind.
