  • Hi, I am new to crocheting and I was wondering if you had some nice things for a baby that use fairly simple crocheting techniques. I am a beginner and a perfectionist. The two combined can be a mess. Could you lead me in the right direction for something of yours? Booties, Blankets, Hats, Headbands, etc... :)

  • i need some help !! im just leanerning how to crochet and im wonting to make some thing for my cousin who is haveing a baby. (like hats booties blankets) if u could help that would help so much.

    thank you

    emily

  • @bluberrypanther I sent you a playlist for some baby booties.

  • I'm trying to make slippers in single crochet in the round. At the end of the round, I've tried to do a slip stitch in the first stitch and after a few rounds, you can see them because they start slanting. Then I tried doing a slip stitch in the ch 1 at the beginning of the round and it does the same thing. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

  • I am having the same problem with my slip stitches looking like a big hole. Im crocheting in the round and chaining 2 and then slip stitching into the 2nd chain when I come back around . It looks like a button hole. It certainly doesnt look right. I just cannot figure out what Im doing wrong?

  • @26purplestone It sounds like it may be a tension issue where you need to pull your yarn a little bit tighter so you do not have such big holes. Keep practicing an it will make sense.

  • Thank you I have crocheted since I was a kid...but want to be better.

  • @TodaywithRuthie You are welcome. I have a second channel with some revisted beginner tutorials. It is YouTube/crochet

  • thank you i get it now!

  • i have a problem..... after i do the chain and the first row of the slip stitch, i can't get the second row to not come out absolutely hideous...

    :( what do i do?

  • @lovelykali What are you trying to make?

  • @tjw1963 a doll that i saw online...all the instructions are there and it says i have to know slip stitch

  • so its kinda like a hdc but its a hsc? lol

  • @kbbles A slip stitch is a low profile stitch that is used to join a round or to get over to another place without being noticed.

  • sorry i'm having a litlle trouble what the difference between this and a single crochet? because a pattern i'm crocheting says to SC6 the sl st to connect but this looks like another single crochet.... am i missing something?

  • @suffocatingrandomnes With the slip stitch you are inserting your hook through the loop, wrap the yarn over your hook and pulling the yarn through both loops at the same time. The single crochet is a high profile stitch when it is created since there is additional maneuvers to create the single crochet.

  • Really nice that you took the time to make such great videos. Thanks:)

  • what is a reverse slip stitch

  • I can help you with a reverse single crochet. I am not sure what you would be referring to with a reverse slip stitch.

  • hi, im an mommy to be in March and i've been learning to crochet a blanket. Ive seen many of ur tutorials that r great. i was wondering if you could do a video on making ruffles for a blanket that i could do.

  • Just a little question: When you do a slip stitch at the end of a chain, is it necessary to skip one stitch?

  • It would depend on the purpose of your slip stitch. I don't know if I fully understand your question.

  • @tjw1963 in the book i'm reading it says do six single crochet in a magic ring then a slip stitch to close round. i think that is what comeXon is talking about. i too need help.

ps. thank you so much for the videos. grandma isn't any help :P

  • same with my book! haha

  • Practice will help you with the tension of your work. Loosen the grip of the yarn running through your opposite hand and you will be able to make looser stitches.

  • Hi T. I did get an answer to my question. when making a design with this stitch you have to do it in a round and that is where I was not understanding. Thanks for your response.

  • Anyone knows what means skip a stich when you are knitting? Please if someone could explain me.

I found it in a knitting chart

    Thank you

  • There is a difference between knitting and crochet. I can help you with skipping a stitch with crochet.

  • hmm,how many chains will we insert the hook to?

  • You can go through 1 loop or 2. It is preference and will be the same either way.

  • my grandmother always called this a single crochet stitch, and the single crochet stitch was her double, but now i get why instructions in books never made sense to me before, i had the stitch names wrong! lol

  • i am just learning how to crochet, i had the same problem as you! My grandma had originally taught me how to crochet, but she never told me the correct names of the stitches :P

  • i printed the basic crochet instructions and it included to do a double crochet but it turned out it was a slip stitch!

  • much appreciation- my mother forgot this one, and I was having trouble figuring it out!

  • Thank you so much for these instructional videos. The book that I have is good, but it seems to skip a lot of important steps. Your videos are wonderful!

  • Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

  • are single crochet and slip stitch the same thing?

  • No they are not.

  • Teresa I am making a Lap Afghan with this stitch but it has you making a design which has you going from the back loop to the front loop in sets of 10 11 times and the last set is 9 sts. I am getting really confused. It is from the book Annie's Attic Crochet Learn slip stitch crochet by Nancy Nehring. I have been looking at those instructions for 2 weeks now and I can't get it right.

  • I'm sorry but I am not familiar with the stitch. What I will suggest is that you contact Annie's Attic or or Nancy Nehring to see if they have more details somewhere about that pattern. A lot of the people who write patterns are accessible online. You can also search directly by putting the authors name in the search engine.

  • I am checking now the author and design for information. But how do you do this stitch continuously? LIke if you wanted to make a scarf or afghan how do you continue to the next line?

  • thx i needed that:)

  • so u use the 1 next 2 the loop next 2 u on the chain?

  • Can you make another video showing you do the 2nd row of slip chain? After I finished the first row, I couldn't identify which stitch(es) to stick the needle in.

  • I have never used a slip stitch with rows. What are you making?

  • I realized that after I left the comment. I'm a complete beginner and I didn't know slip stitch is just to get you from one side to another (correct?).

  • Yes, it has many uses, one of which is getting you from one place to another. You can also use the slip stitch across a chain and use it for a tie or drawstring.

  • Thank you for posting the slow-mo guide. This art left my family with my grandmothers and great aunts before it passed on to me. With these videos I will be able to teach my child so we can bring back the tradition!

Your videos are clear, concise and easy to follow along with. I'm smiling from ear-to-ear with the thought of following in my predecessor's footsteps. 8) Thanks to you, my grandmothers and great-aunts can kind of live on through this trade.

  • Thank you for the heart warming comment. I deeply appreciate it.

  • Thank you thank you thank you! I love how you slowed down the video. I could actually practice along.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • how do you start to crochet

  • grr.. i can't do anything but a chain (and my chain isn't so hot either)!! i should make a video so you can tell me what the heck i'm doing wrong!!

  • I think you may be crocheting your chain to tight. When people first learn to crochet, they often crochet to tight or to loose. Let the yarn flow more freely through the hand opposite your hook. You can also try using a larger hook to make your chain. It does takes take a bit of practice before the stitches and tension are consistent. I am sure you can do it. Don't give up. :)

  • wow. thank you so much for posting this! i bought a book and was completely confused and when i watch these videos i understand it. for a beginer im doing pretty good

  • You are welcome. :)

  • oh! that's easy. the books make it sound much harder than it is.

  • Not to many years ago, the only way to pass down crochet was through someone showing you or through written instructions. The books do have a tendency to make it sound harder than what it really is. To get the full translation, they have to be very descriptive and detailed.

  • this is amazing. I just started crocheting last night, and I was totally confused. I also was a knitter (both needles and loom knitting) and this is actually wayyyyyyy faster for me

  • It is great to hear that you caught on quickly.

  • i want to take this opportunity to thank you.I knit quite a lot but always thought crochetting was very hard, but thanks to the help of your very clear and precise videos i can crochet better than knit now :)

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate your comment.

    ~~Teresa

  • thank you so much!!! i've always wondered what a slip stitch was and now i could understand!!! :)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • thankyou, you have changed my life

  • You are welcome. :)

  • nice, i tried but i have no pacients :p

  • i bet your all girls =p

  • I don't know if i'll ever be able to NOT use my nails to bring a loop over the hook. So annoying..and...I can't even get my hook through the chain. :) Thanks for all the great videos!!

  • You are welcome. I would suggest trying to make a looser chain.

  • Thank you for these tutorials, I am teaching my daughter how to crochet and these are the clearest I have found. How is the slip stitch different from the single stich?

  • The slip stitch has a low profile on top of another stitch. Sometimes the purpose is to get to another stitch and not be noticed. Other times the purpose is to secure a stitch to another stitch using a slip stitch. The slip stitch is used with the basic crochet stitches.

The Single crochet has a higher profile and is the shortest of the basic stitches. You can create full projects with the single crochet.

  • Thanks so much for your videos! I've learned so much from you and I'm almost done with my first stole. It's Dot's Light And Lacy Stole pattern and it's the largest thing I've made so far. I'm on the last row of edging on it and it's a slip stitch. I was wondering when I get to the end and join, how do I make a knot with this stitch? I looked at your slip stitch squares video and it didn't show how to finish the stitch.

  • I figured it out. :) For some reason the ending knots make me nervous because I'm afraid if I don't do it right my work will just unravel lol. Thanks again for your videos. What a nice person you are to take time to teach people how to do this. I really wish I learned how to do this sooner, it's great thing to do when you had a stressful day.

  • Thank you. I am glad to hear you got it figured out.

  • Ahhh, thank you so much!!! I was so confused, and your videos are helping clear up a lot of that confusion. Can't wait to watch the others. :)

  • You are welcome. :) Let me know if you should need help finding a specific video.

  • thank you so, so much for posting these videos. I'm a self-taught crochet...er? I think? lol. but making five scarves in a row with only the single crochet stitch got pretty old pretty quick. thank you so much for these! I knit my four-year-old neighbor and my six-year-old niece rasta hats for Christmas, and they couldn't be happier. anywho, thanks again for these. and especially this one. I couldn't figure out the slip stitch. kind of sad considering I already made two hats. =] merry christmas!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • WONDERFUL!! I knit and wanted to crochet decorations for hats such as flowers ... and you're tutorials are FABULOUS!!!!

  • Thank you. :)

  • Fisrt off, I want to say THANK YOU for posting these! I actually was inspired by you to start crocheting...I stumbled on your video by typing in "pumpkin" just to see real pumpkins and got your lil' crochet pumpkin. I bought a beginners book but it's much easier to learn by your posts! Thanks! I was wondering if you had any tips on how to keep the stitches loose?

  • Looser stitches are related directly to tension. This is how freely you allow the yarn to move through your left hand. It would be the opposite hand if you are a left hand crochet. If you are familiar with sewing, it is the same concept as the tension on a sewing machine. Focus on how your yarn is running through your hand opposite the hook and you will see how to control your tension. Try some practice stitches by holding the yarn tighter, the looser and will make sense.

  • Thank you so much!

  • In regards to slip stitching two granny squares together...how one would start that? Could you possibly do a tutorial showing you stitching two squares together? :) Thanks.

  • I can add it to my "To Do" list.

  • :D Thank you very much! I look forward to it.

  • Theresa, I think this was my crochet style. In fact, I'm sure of it. The one I asked you about? This is the one.

  • I will need you to refresh my memory.

  • I'm the one who asked only a few days ago. I was asking about it for my project, b/c I wasn't sure if I should use this style, or the single stitch style.

  • thanks so much! this is so helpful!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • this is amazing and so is your blog, i have learnt so much off you and i only picked a crochet hook up for the first time three days ago! thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to do these for us :-) after this im thinking of trying knitting too xxx

  • Thank you. I appreciate your comment.

  • the video was very good! but your audio doesn't work half of the time.. just so you know!

  • The audio works fine. This video has slow motion so the background noise has been muted during the slow motion.

  • Thank you SOOO much! I have been trying to learn with just a book, but wasn't quite getting it. Very helpful video... thanks again!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • this was so helpful, the book i was trying to learn from was just about no help at all...this video is great!

  • Thank you.

  • Your videos are FANTASTIC.I am just learning how to crochet on my own. When I found your vids I was sp excited. They are very informative, easy to follow, and how you demonstrate each step/stitch is SUPER helpful. Thanks so much.I have a friend who was looking for a bit of help with crocheting and I just told her to come see you .Shes the second person I sent to your vids.I havent seen any others on here that are done so well.Great work and thanks!! Keep the vids coming :)

  • Thank you. :)

  • Hi!

    Great videos!

This might seem a stupid question but I started learning only yesterday - what is the best way to finish off the work? I just pulled the thread through the loop but should I just cut off the rest of the thread?

  • Pulling the thread through the loop is correct. When you finish a project, you cut off a tail of 4-6 inches. You sew the tail into your work, hiding the tail.

  • OK. Thanks!

  • Just watched this and found out that I wasn't single crocheting at all.. I was slip stitching my entire scarf. No wonder it's been taking so long! lol

  • LOL Oh no!! Sounds like something I've done before. o.O :D

  • I can't really do the slip stitch it's very dificult but now it's really easy

    THANKS FOR THE VIDEO

  • Thanks for the great video!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi teresa, as i said earlier,Im planning to make a blue dainty dress for my niece's birthday, i have already made 2 rectangles that is front and back part of the dress, so now how do i join them to make one single piece??

  • Since they are made you will need to whipstitch them together wiht your yarn or thread. I do have a video tutorial posted about sewing together granny squares. The sewing part is going to be the same.

  • Thanks dear, i liked ur immediate response, god bless you

  • You are welcome. When I am online I will respond right away. Let me know if you need help finding the video if you have trouble finding it.

  • I found the video, thanks..

But when sewing, the end where u started, do u put a knot there and then pull it over?

  • You will want to knot and secure the end of the two adjoining pieces. You can have them facing each other as you are sewing them so the seam is on the inside of your project.

  • got one more question!! :)

im ending the dress with lots of shell stitch at the bottom, but i dont know how to end the first row...do i have to slip stitch over and continue or just keep making shell stitch round and round?

  • You will want to slip stitch in your beginning shell and then continue on with a new row for each round you want to ad.

  • OK that means, my last single crochet stitch after the shell stitch will be slip stitched over the very first shell stitch? and then continue the shell stitch without slip stitching in rest of the rows??

  • No, You just slip stitch in the beginning chain of your first stitch. Then you continue with your next row with the pattern stitch you are working on. When you start a new row you will have a chain of some sort.

  • Oh ok, got it!! thanks a lot dear..

  • Ok dear, thanks... I am hooked on you!! Not a very original line eh?

  • It's cute anyway. :)

  • When do you usually use the slip stitch? Is it useful for something in particular that I would need to know since I am a beginner?

  • You will use the slip stitch all the time in a lot of different places.
