The UVF was not reformed until 1966 (well before the Civil rights campaign had started) Btw it was not just Catholics protesting for Civil rights, most working class Protestants were poor too. Loyalists only objected to NICRA's campaign once republican elements had hijacked it for their own ends. The modern UVF however was in no way a "response" to the campaign for Civil rights, it was a response to earlier republican violence.

If there had been no threat from armed Irish nationalist groups then there would never have been a reconstituted UVF and the UDA/UFF would never have been formed. A minority cannot seek to impose their will on the majority through violent actions and propaganda and yet not expect resistence to that campaign. What were Loyalists supposed to do? Just let the Provos and OIRA, INLA, IPLO etc kill and maim at will?! Don't think so!!

@mcproductions91 Members of PIRA/SF, INLA/IRSP, IPLO, SDLP, GAA, AOH etc. All of whom could rightly be regarded as 'civilians' since they were not RUC or army personnel. But they were the very people trying to force the majority of NI's citizens into an artificial All Island state that they did not want, and they therefore, made themselves the enemy of the UVF, UDA and the Ulster Freedom Fighters.

Btw, the IRA had been active, killing and bombing, during their abortive "Border Campaign"......

@mcproductions91 'civilians' would that include the 30 or so men killed by Loyalists, who at the time of their deaths were described as "innocent Catholics" but whom are now commemorated by PIRA/Sinn Fein as being their "Volunteers"?? Since Loyalist groups were not trying to kill soldiers or Police officers all of their victims could be described as being 'civilians', irrespective of their status. Loyalists, quite rightly, considered ALL Irish republicans as legitimate targets...

Irish republican SCUM have. For instance, the case of young Peter Wilson, one of the so called 'disappeared', a young man with severe learning difficulties. funny how when a young catholic lad is killed the community gets mad at the IRA and calls them savages.

Yet for 35 years and even longer dozens possibly even hundreds of Protestants were murdered, infact butchered in their homes as civilians...some of them shot and killed in Church or Christian services. Men, women and children blew to bits in bomb attacks etc yet no-one from the Roman Catholic community spoke out against the IRA then.
