I'm wondering: How is the trigger pull on yours? I'm about ready to talk to the shop owner about special ordering my Cimarron. If the price is right, I'm going to go with a charcoal bluing :) Looks really nice.
Anyone know all the differences between the 1872 open top and their 1851 navy conversion? I really love the octagonal barrel on the 1851 but if the 1872 is more reliable or accurate I'm opting for that one.
@usfasaa Hi USFASAA, It is indeed an 1860 Richards Army conversion. I re-fitted it with 1851 Navy grips in 1998. That is a change that was often made during the nineteenth century.
@usfasaa Yes, if you look closely in full screen mode you'll see that it has a very slight rebate. This gun was one of the first prototypes made by Armi San Marcos when they brought out their line of cartridge conversion revolvers in the late 1990s. Later ASM guns, and present Uberti Richards-Mason conversions, have a more pronounced rebate. I was one of the first writers to get one of these.
@usfasaa The short answer is "yes". The steel is better throughout. The firing pin hole has a hardened bushing. Action parts wear better. The color case hardening is 100% better on a Colt. But Colts cost three times as much as an Uberti, and that is a consideration too.
@duelist1954 unfortunatly for me in canada they cost an arm and a leg!lollso i bought a cimarron .here in canada a color case hardened model cost 1600$+tax and my model p is around 750$+tax
@warriorofsteel01 I'd recommend a Pietta .44 caliber 1857 Remington New Model Army revolver. They are reasonably priced, and will give you the easiest transition into shooting cap & ball.
@rogerdrake1 I don't know a source for ready made ammo, but you can load your own using special cartridge cases from Dixie Gun Works (item # KA0206). With these cartridges you pull the bullet off of a .22 Short round and dump out the powder. The .22 gets loaded into the .44 Rimfire cartridge to act as the primer. Then you fill the .44 case with black powder and a .450" round ball or bullet. When you load the chambers, orient the round so the .22 shell will be hit by the Open Top firing pin.
I'm glad I found this video... I've read and re-read your article on these in "Guns of the Old West" and they make me drool every time. Beautiful guns!
I just recently starting watching your videos. Have you done a show on the french LaMatt revolver/shotgun yet? If not, will you???

Very good video that "made" me purchase that same revolver in .38. Where did you get your canvas belt?
Hersheymeow 9 months ago
@Hersheymeow Hersheymeow, I made that belt myself about 12 years ago. The Mills belt plate and fittings came from S &S Firearms.

Thanks Remington. I prefer putting model P grips on my conversions and Open Tops. The grips are ivory made by Jim Alaimo at Nutmeg Sports

Those OpenTops look beautiful with the Model P gripframe.
