@never4getthis Actually the program starts in 2011. Don't know if they will send anyone soon but the space shuttle program is already canceled effective May 2010. So any other mission will be through the Ares I or Ares V rockets which are the ones who are supposed to bring us back to the moon.

Most space crafts don't return to earth. The ones that do don't need much fuel. they use earths gravity to get back to the planet. Like an asteroid that hits the earth doesn't need fuel to come down.
1. Check the lists of contributing scientists. You will find many non-US scientists.
2. Now there is no urgent reason to go to the moon. I mean, to simply go there, like the other nations.

If they launched manned spacecraft from the Moon to mars it would use Esentially 1/6th of the weight.. You wouldnt need to carry as much fuel or use as much power to break the moons gravity as it would to break the earths gravity so you could carry a shit load more stuff to mars from the moon
Plus the added advantage of no atmosphere friction.But as a enthusiast of all things space I would personally launch a Mars bound spacecraft from Earth orbit fully fueled.Saving the infastructure required to be a Moon based launch.

Bush did say we'll go to Mars. The moon is just the first step. We set up a base on the moon so we can launch in low gravity using locally mined hydrogen and oxygen (which will come from water).
Currenlty NASA are looking for water on the moon for that reason.

@never4getthis Actually the program starts in 2011. Don't know if they will send anyone soon but the space shuttle program is already canceled effective May 2010. So any other mission will be through the Ares I or Ares V rockets which are the ones who are supposed to bring us back to the moon.

there is no force(air, gravity etc..) stopping the ships once it reaches space. Thus a little bit of thrust goes a long way.
Also most of the fuel used is to get into space but the rockets come off the spacecraft once they are used up and empty.

Most space crafts don't return to earth. The ones that do don't need much fuel. they use earths gravity to get back to the planet. Like an asteroid that hits the earth doesn't need fuel to come down.

If they launched manned spacecraft from the Moon to mars it would use Esentially 1/6th of the weight.. You wouldnt need to carry as much fuel or use as much power to break the moons gravity as it would to break the earths gravity so you could carry a shit load more stuff to mars from the moon

Bush did say we'll go to Mars. The moon is just the first step. We set up a base on the moon so we can launch in low gravity using locally mined hydrogen and oxygen (which will come from water).
Currenlty NASA are looking for water on the moon for that reason.

Hear hear. I'm with Aldrin on this one. Going *back* to the moon is a silly misuse of resources we could be putting towards making a successful manned mission to Mars. Let's grow a pair.
The Moon is "been there, done that". It would be different if there were lots more to learn and do there, but there isn't. Mars holds a lot more promise -- for one thing, it has an atmosphere, even if it's thin.

the LRM just took pictures of it from lunar orbit. It will soon have even better pictures.
