Hi everyone lol I too have just read this part in his fabulous book, I think Michael is just adorable and admire him even more after reading his book with all his struggles.
+1, read book. Strange thing is, though, I didn't find this too funny. And I like McIntyre's comedy. I respect him immensely for what he went through before success.
But this being the one that sent him over the top seems strange. Cause IMO this wasn't that good and he's been so much better after this.
Agreed! I've just got to the end of that chapter when I thought I couldn't resist a peek a this, after having read the positives about this sketch. . . and I also adore his talent and comedy, but yeah interesting to see that this was the deal-breaker. Great comedian!
Living Legend. Like many of you, the book brought me here too... I think the audience didnt serve him justice at this performance cos he was still unknown but I'm glad he made it after all he's been through. I can't wait to see him at the02 next year :-)
Yepp same here, book brought me here.just read the book and I laughed so much i got to add,and yes i just had to watch this after reading it,even though i did see it at the time in 2006 but did not realise that it was his make/break it debut :)
@NeverFearLucysHere No, it was the influence of his first son being born that lead him to get a new manager who got him on this show and his second son was born in 2008.
@sheepdog2c7 Exactly the same, mate! He's an inspiration! Comedians who take the mick out of him and rubbish him don't know how hard he's worked to get into comedy and his dedication and psssion for it! I love you Michael, rightly the funniest comedian in the world atm <3
I finished reading his book last night, and it has made me feel a lot different about his comedy, knowing everything he went through, first with his wife, then his baby, and then actually seeing his big break for myself, and knowing exactly how he reacted when he went backstage, it's made me appreciate his great comedy even more! :)
@sheepdog2c7 When I finshed reading his book, I felt justtt the same as you. I honestly thought I was alone on this. The Book makes me understand him even more and well.. what you just said.
Just finished listening to his audiobook and when he was talking about this i couldn't believe people weren't laughing at him to start with! What's wrong with these people?! Laugh!
I used to HATE it when comedians repeat the same jokes at different gigs but reading his autobiography made me realise the importance of it.. the first book i have read in 7 or 8 years (just finished it) hope he becomes a worldwide phenomenon and makes Britain proud!
I also just finished the autobiography, I loved him before, but since reading it, I love him even more and have nothing but respect and admiration for him. I watched this before reading the book, but reading it afterwards and knowing what it took to actually get to this point, you see it in a different light.

After reading his autobiography it is amazing watching this. All the stuff that happened before this event is totally unapparent- he is a charming, charismatic comedy genius. He even made the jokes hilarious without the swearing. I was in stitches- Michael McIntyre is an inspiration and totally deserves to be where he is now. :)
Tough crowd. This had me screaming with laughter. Not meaning this in an offensive manner but it might have been because they are mostly 'upper class' and wouldn't have related to the jokes as easily. Just a thought.
It's amazing how everyone has done what I've done finished the chapter and went to the iPhone, 35,000 pounds of debt with his first child gives me hope excellent book thought it would of been shit!!!!
aww i just finished his "audio book", absolutely brilliant! wish it was longer though, and a lot more detail of after he started becoming successful....such a nice guy and so much determination to keep trying and trying, a lesson for us all to learn in life!
@ShazG09 I do recall in an interview with him he said the richer the audience the more they don't like his jokes and don't laugh. I felt really bad but hey he's successful and many people adore him (like me) :)
Seeing this makes me laugh, not only because of his unique comedy, but because you can see his distinctive style developing even within this short sketch. Even that walk which is now his trademark is part of his joke in this :))
lols one time i saw a man driving in a 12 passenger van on the sidewalk and on his back window it said "how am i driving? call me at ***-***-****" and i just laughed when he mentioned it
I think the audience was being a bit shy because Michael was basically just starting out as a comedian and wasn't as successful than as he is now. You can compare this Royal Variety Performance to a recent one and you can clearly see, the audience is more into him now -- still, though, I found the traffic-warning joke quite a good'un! :)
