@hknp without competition to drive the price down there would be a monopoly on the graphics card market. That would cause really high prices. Also if they merge then they don't have to make the best cards anymore since they would still make profit by selling old cards. But we can always dream :)
When DirectX11 comes into play, that's when Nvidia wins...oh wait, they already do. Nvidia has better drivers, better GPU's for tesselation, PhysX, and CUDA.
Im not sure why people keep saying that the 480 being only 1 gpu will be way better than the 5970 when nVidia creates a dual gpu of it. Dont people realize that even with their 1 gpu it overheats and consumes more power than the ATI's dual gpu 5970?
@sniperlif3 yes the 480 has overheating issues lol. but thats now fixed thanks to the new 580. they got rid of those stupid heat pipes and made a "vapor chamber". and b4 anyone say shit yes i know that it works the same way but the "vapor chamber" runs much cooler. And yes the new card still draws alot of power but that power isn't wasted, its used to run DX11 at its highest and Physx and the rest of them. in Heaven 2.0 the 580 got 10-15 more FPS than the 480 (only 1 GPU card, highest setting)
@TheKoups Yeah it dropped the temp by 5-10 degrees but im still doubting their creation of a dual gpu based off the 580, it draws a lot of power and of course would be hot just as well but hell maybe they will =)
yes that maybe so but the clock speeds are higher all everything so really that 5-10 degrees difference is really not true. the 580 will never find itself as a dual GPU card. 1: power, 2: heat, 3: not cost effective.
The GTX580 is a full length card unless the put a FULL copper water block inbetween 2 "cards" it will never fit, not to mention the heat and weight. you'd be force to have GPU card support brakets.
@TheKoups Well what about the GTX 285? Didnt people think the similar thing would be true when they made the 295 which was 2 cards pushed together? Now i dont disagree that they probably wont go for a dual GPU card because that wouldnt work very well for them, but it could very well be possible.
@sniperlif3 yes but the GTX 285 doesn't have the same heat output as the GTX580. thats y i dont think we'll see a dual gpu card with the 580 chip unless its cooled by something better water cooling. thats just my thought
@TheKoups Yeah i dont think they wont be able to make it a dual gpu card on just air either but maybe they have some special plan if they ever decided to make it.
Might as well have package an air conditioner and a generator with each card =)
ati has faster cards right now with less cost to nvidia and ati preforms quite well also but
things like ray tracing , phsx , cuda , 3d vision these all things are the future yes they do slow ur games but gives a realistic feel Nvidia makes a gpu not just for games it for work, animation, gpu rendering and to be technical there's not a huge difference in the frame rate 15 fps here and there dose't matters if ur getting 100+ frames in 97% of the games i guess that gives nvidia the edge
Well, I can't afford either on a collage student budget. I don't believe in brand loyalty. If I were going to buy one it'd probably be the ATI board. My experiences in the past with nVidia board they don't really seem as responsive for some reason. Even if the 480 is fastest card on the market it won't always be. Fact of the matter is either of these boards will be overkill for any game out today.
gtx 480 is supposed to be a 5870 rival, is a single gpu card, and its pretty good...bt aniwat whatever you choose, should be more than enough for most of people here...those card are beast.
You spelled Nvidia wrong. And right now ATi has alot of DX11 cards comparied with 2 from Nvidia, obviously people are going to buy the 5970 it being the only dual GPU DX11 card ATM.
personally I think macbooks, and macs for that matter will remain with 512mb video cards for at least till the 3rd quarter of 2010.
As for nvidia fermi or ati 59xx, I will always go with ATI because like it's parent company AMD, they have proven time and time again to provide informed consumers with much better value. I also vouch for AMD, as intel sold out it's processors to apple and it's bimbotic(and annoying) consumer base, and I don't want to get branded as such.
@isellcookies1 that can be hacked for ati cards... just slowed down my games with my geforce card so had to tern it of anyways. What I would say is a plus is that 480 will have 3d vision, and thats the only bright side.
u are aware that nvidia is like a year behind, and falling faster. ati will be coming with the 6000 series in like a year i think and nvidia is just coming out with something that may rival some of their 5000 line
@imtihanahmed I am aware of this. However, a year is a long way away and it is right now that we are talking about. If you are to buy a ati 5000 card in a year it will be just as old as a 480 card.
@imtihanahmed yes they maybe a year bihind but atlease nVidia drivers are solid. 1 driver does all unlike the AMD/ATI cards. what is it, like 1 driver per game? if ur lucky
Sapphire 5970 OC CrossfireX plus Palit GTX 285 2GB for dedicated PhysX. ATI's drivers sucks. Can't use the newest one cause of major problems. So, I have to revert to CCC v10.2+Application Profiles v10.3. Always get 99 degrees celcius with these cards when playing. How hot can 480 be? The only thing I don't like with 480 is that it cosumes more power. Can't wait for my Inno3d GTX 480 3way SLI.
with 480, no need for dedicated PhysX. Quality of drivers are superb, except for v196.75, with that fan issue. Well, i guess it's okay. No harm, no foul. 480 is a single GPU card but could almost stand up against a dual GPU card which is the 5970 by just a mere 15% lost in over-all gaming performance. Do i still need to say the over-all quality? We all know that NVIDIA takes it.
oh yeah- and as for the macbook pro 2010, apple will probably give it a shit card. The drivers for mac are really bad anyway, and macs are already too overpriced.
Why pepole talk to much shit about Nvidia and REDION they both good GPU's just pick which one do you whant , i goin whit Nvidia cazz i got alredy 3d vision ...
well, the 5970 is a dual GPU card. the GTX480 is single GPU card (i think?) and beats it by 5% is performance (from what i understand) i think thats a triumph. best of luck to both brands. may the better man win.
@andrewesquivel who cares. Its essentially a dual-GPU card, but still a "single card". Heck, the GTX 295 was a dual GPU too, and Nvidia was bragging about it being the "fastest gpu ever".
who gives a shit, nvidia took to long to create some not that impressive. Toooo late, I was an nvidia guy now ATI. that should teach them not to take so dam long. And they did cause they havent been able to beat ATI and they still cant. Cause theyre not being straight about their fps results
5970 all the way lol theres a bunch of fake videos that show gtx 480 vs ati 5870 and saying its the 5970 when its not only that there is a new version of the 5970 coming out thanks to asus its gonna be a LOT faster clocked and have 4gb of gddr5 memory also ati is having a software fix so the 5870 will be doing 6 screens so lol these two companies are both being childish to each other but ati is currently in the lead when it coming to GPUs nvidia needs something a little better than the gtx 480
WTF is wrong with all of your english? its TERRIBLE. anyway, if you want a good cheap card with shitty drivers, get ati. if you want the best you can get, its nvidIA. ive built rigs with both, and nvidias cards run better.

1st, i was talking to Gtx 470 and Gtx 480, not all fermi series cards.
2nd, gtx 470 has higher consumption than 5870, and gtx480 than 5970.
3rd, Gtx 480 reaches 80+ºC in load in stock cooler, now go compare it with ATI 5XXX series, do they make more heat? i dont think so.
4th, the only fermi serie of card that suprises me is the gtx460, witch has good temps, price/performance and low power consumption.
