  • A great song in need of a much better video. Whenever I hear it this urban night scene comes to mind...

  • Sultry, hot, sweaty. Girls love this one !

  • I like the song, but a bit sickened by the girly not shaving under her pitts!

  • I sooo hope your wrong, but it does look incriminating! I THINK it's her hair falling past her shoulders, I hope!! Anyway, still great tune...

  • What? Do all those chicano girls shave these days then? You should learn to love hairy pits man, and nuzzle; Mmmmm

  • why does everyone like this? he's an ego-maniac. listen to taylor swift instead. she's cool

  • I've always liked this song. It's very cool--and different. Doesn't fit the usual mold. That being said, the video sucks.

Robbie R. = Eddie V.H. sexy older brother.

I've never once thought of Star Wars while listening to this song. If anything, it reminds me of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks."

I agree with helimeche60. I've always thought Tom Waits should do more voiceover work too.

  • I mean't Robbie Robertson's voice as far as voiceover work.

  • It's a good song, but nothing compares with "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." This was his signature and masterpiece.

  • I've always liked this song, but it's freakin weird!

  • This is a weird song! But it's great!

  • great sng but cant help laughing at bit at the music video

  • The very beginning reminds me of Star Wars...

  • It has always reminded me of Luke looking at the double suns setting. That's funny I'm not the only one who thinks of Star Wars when they hear this. Great song regardless.

  • somewhere down the crazy river ....

  • Robbie should lend his voice doing commercials, movie trailers for Hollywood, and animation movie characters, and discovery channel documentaries.Power in his voice.

  • Excellent song! My favorite Robbie's solo one.

  • Just an absolutely brilliant song. Hadn't listened to this album in awhile and when this came on I melted.

  • "i said: i don't know, the wind just kinda push me this way"

  • A thing of lyrial imagery and literal reference mixed with a beautiful chorus! Top song!

  • 'armpits and onion rings' LOL snort snort LOL

  • Love Love this song,, It Sizzels in the shade ~:)

  • God, I love Maria McKee! I wish she would have danced like this for me! I guess I'll have to keep fantasizing about it! DAMN!

  • Great song , but maybe not as good as Chris Rea ?

  • @FlyingWoolf certainly nice! Blue cafe?

  • Maybe my favorite song of all time!

  • fucking awesome song! I have this on vinyl and finally played it again tonight for the 1st time in over 20 years (on my new TT) Sounds so fucking life like!

  • When I first heard this song, i couldn't believe it existed. It told me...things were out there. Things that were....intriguing....and that I hoped were out there. They were.

    Thanks for posting.

P.S. Sorry I couldn't watch the video. I had to turn away so it wouldn't ruin the one I've always had in my head.

  • The backup singer (singing the refrain, "Somewhere down the crazy river") is Sam Llanas from the BoDeans. If you recognize the voice, that's probably where you've heard it...

  • You're absolutely right brother CC :-) It wouldn't have been in my favourites for all this time if I couldn't feel the heat. Your armpit/onion ring metaphor is spot on, if slightly unsavoury :-)

  • should be a comercial for beer

  • wow....I had forgotten all about this song. It sure stirs up a lot of ghosts! Who is the backup singer? (when I was a kid I thought it was Yakky Doodle)

  • I lerv him, so much, what a talent, what a song, am in ecstaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • I will never get tired of this track,what a great song,the lyrics,the voice,so sexxxxxxy

  • Sizzlin' hotttttttttttt

  • I said no, i like it, i like it, it's good. She said you like it now, but you'll learn to love it later. GENIUS!

    So funny, but so cool!

  • Agreed, but not funny, just utterly cool!

  • 'until my armpits reek like onion rings'... So true CC but way too much information dude ;-)

  • ,,there is no such thing as to much good information brother Emmett,,,,can you feel the heat ?

  • Beautiful, longing, terrifyingly beautiful.

  • Yeah, "Hang the rich" if you can stand the stench of being that near them.

  • Robbie is so sultry in this video it just makes me want to drip sweat & perspire until my armpits reek like onion rings.

  • Easy baby! Use some deoderant if need be1

  • ...hey if you ripped off your former BAND-mates; you'd book, too !

  • My drama class did a tableaux piece to this song, so it's permanently lodged in my brain. It starts to make sense after the 10 zillionth time.

  • Sexy man, sexy eyes, sexy song.... oh baby I like it :))

  • Completely ruined the song with the slow talky bits ... like wtf. A perfectly good chorus ruined!

  • .... it's exactly the "slow talky bits" that make this the brooding, sultry, down-along-the-bayou, Southern Gothic classic that it is.

  • the 'slow talky bits' are the best part. I thought it was Tom Waits when I heard it for the first time.

  • I don't all the comments about how different this is from the Band. Why do you think he left the Band? He wanted to do something different. Well, his 2 solo discs were far and away different from anything he did with the Band. What's he supposed to do? The same stuff for 40 years? Has anyone heard of growth?

  • Also, I like how Robertson sells himself at being borderline psychotic.

  • I actually appreciate how this video is odd.

  • This fuckin blows.

  • This is horrid.

  • This is fuckin weird man. What happened between "The Weight" and this

  • heard this on the radio and thought why are they playing luke's skywalker's theme?

hundreds of comments. doesn't anyone else think the beginning of this song is ripping off star wars?

  • HEHE, I have the star wars cd's and yes, for a second it is.

  • amazing song, but im surprised at all the fags that dont recognize it

  • beautiful song

  • Love the song, but can someone please tell me what this song is all about ? I have some idea but would like it clarified ...................Cheers to who ever does.

  • Hypnotizing tune for a 2am hot summer starry night...Sensual and mysterious tale..Just lay back underneath the starry sky and let the hot summer breezes carry you into the dream, until the dawn will gently wake you up and you will find out it was just a dream. like life are...

  • Or if the radio is on just as you're waking up.

  • Good luck with your taste in Brendan Benson.

  • such an awesome song . . it stimulates the imagination does it not ?

  • I had no idea this was Robbie until I saw it on my XM display...a bit of a change from The last waltz days...

  • on second listen to this tony levin on bass peter gabriel dont give up.

  • how come no one mentions sammy bodean. what a great vocal.check out the bodeans.you wont regret it trust me

  • good track, i bought in on 7"

  • "Wait, did you hear that? Ahhh, this is sure stirrin' up some ghosts for me."

  • Great tune and unbelievable rich lyrics.

  • at 1:49 i thought this was a black woman until i saw this video

  • it probably is- don't let whoever is singing background in the video fool you 99% of the it's not the actual backup singer. In fact it was probably done deliberately

  • catch the blue train

  • Wonderfull song. :-)

I love this song very much. :-)

  • Robbie Robertson is a great songwriter and this is a great tune. I love the bass line especially, with the great arpeggios. The drums are excellent. The reference to Little Willie John is a wonderful acknowledgement and it's so Louisiana, Voodoo wonderful. So, really, those of you that can't feel this groove should go listen to bubble gum or Tommy James or something. Obviously, this music is just too darned deep for ya'! And you can put your dis'ing Canada where the sun doesn't shine, too!

  • I like both Robertson and Tommy James. What should I do?

  • Well, that made me smile. Tommy rocked out pretty good, too! I've covered "Hanky Panky" in several bands, so it's all good. "Fear no music!"

  • now i know why he didnt sing when he was in the band, and its hard to believe he took all the credits for writing all the bands songs-

  • first off robbie robertson did sing some back up vocals for the band

second of all robertson is singing backing vocals on theis track, peter gabriels is sing main vocals,

  • what r u talking about peter gabriel? robertson is singing this whole song.

  • This is sheer class

  • The video got the airplay required. And of course with Daniel Lanois as producer, who cares what dissenters say.

  • Haha, Martin Scorcese makes the worst music videos ever. Who would have thought?

  • robbie not a bad guy, but this video is kin of cheesy

  • This video = Definition of the 80's

  • lmao thats canada for ya

  • I pictured similar to what you described.

  • I always pictured the video for this as filmed on the steamy delta with slo-mo alligators, old abandoned Chevys, telefoto big sunsets, something more like the movie "Angel Heart".

This was weak for such a strong song.

  • I agree, weak video for such a sultry sound.. Polk Salad Annie got me also.... It's a white guy [Tony Joe White] that sings that song!!, would have thought that it was a big black man sittin on a shack porch, with a Lectric Geetar! Lawd have mercy, pick me a mess of it!

  • straight razor toten woman! LOL , Gater Gotcher Granny! That is a WHITE dude!! no S*#t! I never would have guessed that!! lol

  • sowhere down the crazy river i read ny hand by madam X..mmmh

robbie we hang the rich but their have all the ropes and trees

  • Can you spell p.r.e.t.e.n.t.i.o.u.s?

  • A timeless classic.

  • awsome

  • I love the song, but my god what a cheezy video!

  • It's a friggin video, who cares? I've seen way, way worse. Plus, this was done by Martin Scorcese! Watch it now!! ;)

  • No, you're right, I don't really care that much :-) I still don't think it's good, but I suppose the 80s are just a long time ago now ... By the way, it was a shock to see that what I always imagined was an old, black woman with a whisky-voice singing the repeat of "somewhere down the cracy river" was a young man ...

  • More odd then cheesy, I believe

  • With a very young Sammy of the BoDeans. Just seen him last weekend. He was excellent, Sammy that is at the Oakland Art & Soul Festival. Love Robbie too.

  • the wind just kinda pushed me this way

  • Maria McKee is the girl in the video. She was the lead singer for Lone Justice. She does solo stuff now. Just saw in concert a few ago.

  • Manu Katche, Tony Levin are great on this track. Anyone know who the other musicians are?

  • When love comes lippin'! What an awesome way to let time grow wings and learn to fly. Gimme that just enough! What an awesome song. She's kinna cute dat one!

  • think you

  • What happened to the girl in this video. I don't recall seeing anywhere else.

  • shit, i'm glad he didn't sing in the band

  • he kind of looks like MR WHITE from Resevior Dogs

  • Robbie Rob is sooooo fine!!!

  • I agree, and its not even that hes the best looking guy in the world its just he oozes so much sexuality in a tasteful matter in this video.. Its so seductive... mmm mmm mmm!! And im a straight male!! Im not turned on by Robbie im just turned on about what hes passionate about in this song!!

  • Robbie's songs with The Band were amazing. When this cd floated into the musical world it was like a minor miracle was taking place. You can go back and listen to the cd and you'll find nothing is dated. He writes timeless music. By the way, I've been following Leonard Cohen's career since his first book of poetry, his novels and his first album. Now, he's like aged wine, deep and rich.

  • I couldnt agree more!

  • I'd say the wine has turned to vinegar, but hey, whatever turns you on! I'm probably wrong because I think it broke the UK top 40?

  • what a tool

  • lol

  • This song is soo addictive, this isnt even close to my genre of music but for the longest time i thought this was LEONARD COHEN on the radio everytime i heard it. Haha Leonard Cohen and Robbie are both legends..

  • I remember when I was a sophomore in h.s. and numerous mornings, VH-1 showed this video. At the time, I wasn't previously familiar with Robbie's work but after thinking what weird song/video initially, I am embraced it.

  • Cool Tune,

    Love Robbie Robertson !!

  • lovely song...wonderfull lyrics....nice and solid voice....well made....

  • this song is fucking awesome

  • i feel such an arse when i spell things wrong - Maria Mckee is a Goddess and is hotter than ever

  • well arse the spellier the hotter

  • that girl who cant dance is the Godess Maria Mckee yum

  • Great tune..

  • "Somewhere Down The Crazy River", a beat with soul~!

  • awesome - such soul

  • we don't need the girl who can't dance

  • like it now, love it later

  • I luv me some Robbie Robertson !!!

  • I didn't know Robbie could sing.

I'm not a huge fan of the talking but the singin is alright.

Amazing how different Danko, Levon and Robbie's sounds are away from 'The Band'.

Robbies make-out scene at 4:00 is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.

    Man, I miss the eighties!

  • With respect to Robbie the artist and creator, he is but a pedestrian singer. He does a good job here, but it was for good reasons that he turned to the other members of The Band to sing his songs.

The "make-out scene" is indeed of its time. :-)

  • He sings, but he can't sing. This is a studio recording. It's allright, it's decent, it's good. They can whisper and use the takes that are good. He sings with soul though. Love the man!

  • I love the man, too, but don't you think he looks funny without a strat on his arm? I'm reminded at how the recording studio took the great Steve Winwood and had him sing without either keyboards or guitar.. It was a howl. HOw did Lester Bangs put it: "The War is over. They won. They will strangle rock n roll until we have lost sight of everything we loved about it."

  • What about some funny dancing, or slo-mo running behind wind machines? Some live action painting, a making of-featurette in 23 secs and more funny colors... I hear you phddddd. I saw both him and Levon Helm in movies. Now thAt's weird...

  • is it just me, or does he sound remarkably like Patrick Swayze?

  • lol just you.

  • I've always loved this tune-had it on a cassete tape and nearly wore it out--not especially crazy about the video but just love hearing th song. oNE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES-JUST DIFFERENT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT MEMORABLE WHILE BEING GOOD BELLY-RUBBING MUSIC

  • Ah, the Cat doing back up! Now, that's hot!!!!! Always thought so....

  • Call me the whitest black man if you want to, but I am just a sucker for unusual tunes...like Arsenio Hall once said, "you don't have to be popular...you just have to be good!!! And this is good!!!

  • Wait, at 2:40 the bass player, is he (or was he) a member of Peter Gabriels band? Correct me if I am wrong.

  • yes it's Tony Levin. You are correct!

  • yup, Tony Levin on bass. Also, Manu Katche on drums, who also worked with Peter Gabriel.

  • this song is all over Q107 in toronto

  • cause he grew up in the area....

  • Comment removed

  • wow totem drop

    hilarious none the less

    ah the 80's

  • Crazy hot!!!

  • Great song and video. too bad UMG is a retard company.

  • Love the seductive beat...

  • Maria McKee gives me a boner and I'm a girl!

  • Comment removed

  • pambot415...must be an impressive sight.

  • Maria McKee gives me a boner, and I'm a girl!

  • Ooh, very sensual song ;O

  • Is this a song about heroin?

  • i can and can't believe that robertson did this

  • man this really brings back some old haunts.

  • this is sure stirrin up some ghosts for me

  • wildheart that is very racial

  • Isn't the blonde the singer from Lone Justice?

  • Yas, that is Maria McKee

  • i just love this song it is so.......good!!

  • OMG LMFAO!!! I have always loved this song since hearing it growing up as a kid...but this is one of the funniest things I have ever seen..the guys l@@Ks severely constipated :OP & I cannot figure out what I thought was a chick doing back up l@@ks like an aborigine dude from the outback WTF?

  • he's not from medicine hat, nor does he practice dark magic. great song though :)

  • A timeless great sexy song !!!!!

  • when i first heard this song it was like man you have to use this on my next romantic dinner at home with a women you love the song ooozzzed sex!!!

  • Damb! I wanna be him so bad in this video!

  • Hes not cute...he is an old indian from Medicine Hat, Alberta...I believe he works dark Magic.. my opionion

  • Great song... great mood setter but a really lousy video. Everything, especially that dancing blonde, seems totally out of context for this music.

  • Comment removed

  • Couldn't disagree more ...across the board. It's a simplistic video... sensual and seductive... as is the song and "that dancing blond" is one of the most amazing performers I ever had to privilege to see live. Marie McKee singing with her band Lone Justice at the Hollywood Palace is a memory I will always treasure.

  • i dont see how u came up with that conclusion... hes talking about a woman the whole time

  • Nooo! I need the embedding code!! UGHHH
