“That’s a wrap!” John Landis shouted through the loudspeaker and the standard, banal words signaling the end of filming day sounded sickeningly incongruous."
man,he shouted as it was a regular scene "that´s a wrap!",after the accident.Sorry, but i think, after this, that this was another of those sacrifices, search Bohemian Grove, brandon lee or heath ledger sacrifice. This is too evil to be true...and may be
Assistant camera operator Randy Robinson and the chopper pilot Wingo were discussing the intense heat of the fireball(they were hit by the heat of one before the scene) and, according to Outrageous Conduct, a smiling Landis told them, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!”
Rest Vic and those 2 kids...we wont see justice, not here
A fire-safety officer named Richard Ebentheuer told his superior, George Hull, he was concerned that the helicopter might crash because of the size of the blasts. Hull told his underling to take his fears to the filmmakers.
Ebentheuer let out an expletive and said, “The helicopter will be on the ground!”
Concerned, Shyan-Huei Chen asked George Folsey, “Is it dangerous?”
“No, not dangerous,” he assured her, “just a loud noise.”
Well, Shyan is the little girl and Folsey first director assistant for Landis...and that being asked by her after a water bomb threw dust on her eyes...
500 bucks each day,two 2 equal 1 thousand dollar just for this...on an envelope to their mothers...yes,they parents watched it all live...the mother of the girl even said "she love movies, she will remember this experience when she gets old"
Folsey, the first director assistant and Landis were seeing making a joke before the scene "We will all go to jail for this, ahahah"
I spent the night thinking about this crime and vic morrow is not ok with it,not in rest,he was completely in shock and his anguish is tremendous...the kids i guess are fine...anyway,i did not control it,it went as an image, and i just knew the death video i went to see him today and, yes,it was his face, but very white, some bruises and sad
Also discovered a website talking about the ilegality of the children hired, all the history, landis gave money to the families to put them around explosives
God dammit,i read about the ilegal hiring of the kids of the tragic scene, the ilegality of the hiring, working around explosives and working at 2 a.m.,and those effects too dangerous...well john landis and his assistants should be rotting in jail.
Would Landis have wanted his kids in the situation that Myca-Lee, Renee and Vic were in? A good question to ask himself. How he could have such blatant disregard for the lives of others is despicable.
The worst is that the movie stil can be found, even after that shit happened... how do you feel when you watch the movie? I'm not fond of looking at something knowing that it killed people, and that it won't make me any better man...
Landis was a reckless dick. He got off on his own ego, thinking they can pull off a stunt like this. They could of EASILY shot the scene in two parts with the helicopter separately. How fucking stupid or coked out must you be to put actors 25ft underneath a helicopter while firebombs are going off. That lacks total common sense, and for that, he should have been convicted of gross negligence. Parents must have been scared shitless when they saw the chopper fly onto set.
See, if they had just waited a decade when computer graphics were available, Morrow, and the two children would be filming their next movies, and living great lives.
There are some inaccuracies in the text of the video. The tail rotor of the helicopter did not detach from the vehicle. It's unclear whether heat from the explosions, the concussive force of the blasts or debris from a nearby hut caused the chopper to spin out of control. Also, helicopters certainly were used extensively in Hollywood films through the 80s and 90s; 4 people were killed by a crashing chopper on a Chuck Norris movie in 1987, and Stallone was nearly decapitated the same year.
I saw the FOD version just for a visual account. I'd heard about it years ago, and seen part of the movie that I remember, I was pretty young. I think John Landis is a fine director and it still was a bit callous of him in how he handled it after there was known to be something wrong. Reading TRUtv's website version, which is a good account of the ins and outs, he sent the crew home calling it a "wrap", others feel that was the wrong thing to do. Hindsight is always 20/20, it was likely a shock
Back when TZ: The Movie came out, I encouraged people to boycott it because of Landis' putting the so-called "need" for a real "whiz-bang" shot ahead of actors' safety and well-being. To this day, this footage is the only thing I've ever seen from that movie (which thank God, tanked at the box office too)-and I intend for it to remain for the rest of my life the only footage I'll ever see. I still encourage people NOT to see this atrocity, even if it's free. Bite us, Landis.
Were the fuck is this kids parents!!! Why is this shit being allowed to happen!. Damn my heart hurts for this kid... if the boy in this clip happens to read this email me at TastyOne.2000@gmail.com
If your parents don't care for u come live with me I will never let this happen to you again
Accidents happen. I was one of those kids back in the 80's who couldn't wait to see this movie when we found out it was in production, and learning of the accident just made it feel strange when it came out. However, if we look at movies like Catch 22 (Mike Nichols) and many other films up to that point, it was common place for actors and crew members to be VERY close to explosives and dangerous machines. Good to see that some things changed for the better as a result of this accident.
@firefightergoggie I appreciate your generosity in allowing that "accidents happen", but with respect, you don't know the facts of this case. Landis ordered the helicopter to hover in proximity to huge, untested explosions while two children were working illegally at night, without permits, underneath the chopper and close to the explosives. Vic Morrow was an adult who made a bad decision to follow Landis's directions... but the children had no such choice or judgment.
@Vortigern99 Cant argue that point. The pilot, director and possibly the explosions expert should have been sent to prison for involuntary manslaughter of the children.
@clev9980 In fairness to Camomile the explosives man, he was watching the kids to make sure they didn't run back to the village as he was detonating the bombs from his board. He should have been looking up to check the position of the chopper, too, but he was wearing a welding mask on his head that obscured his vision. Paul Stewart, on the other hand, probably placed the mortar under the four-legged hut that knocked the chopper out of control. It was never proven who set that charge.
Look what happened to Eric Fleming. Drowning in a river where they SHOULD have had some sort of safey lines or something.
It didn't seem to change much how they did things in Hollywood, since it's all the money. Friggin' Landis AND Spielberg, may they rot in hell ten times over.
@Vortigern99 Myca Le's Head-right shoulder and arm were severed. In the faces of death video you can see the head cut off and ends up near the mock burning village set.
avoided helicopters for several years, did they? What was that thing the warden jumped from in Runaway Train? What was that thing Arnold Schwarzenegger said to get to in Predator? What was that thing Dr. Falken was flying in War Games? How come there were still overhead shots in car chase scenes?
John Landis is a fucking arrogant and brainless moron for what he had done. If he had a brain, he would have known that children aren't allowed to work overnight.
Not to mention, he was unsympathetic about Morrow's death. At Morrow's funeral, he said that proud to have directed Vic in what Vic, himself, considered the best performance of his career. If that's not the least bit tasteless, I don't know what is.
No way world Vic Morrow would forgive John Landis. His ghost will haunt him forever.
@vnisanianisback I believe he felt strongly about the art, Reading a site account, it seems there were some poor decisions that can't all be mounted on Landis' shoulders. He's done fine films as a director, even Michael Jackson's Thriller after this debacle. There's no easy way to deal with accidents like this. However, having changes implemented was required
@vnisanianisback The filmmakers knew full well they were breaking the law; Landis admitted it under oath. What Landis did was reckless and criminally negligent. But I wouldn't characterize him as unsympathetic. His statements from the period reveal his grief and bewilderment over what he considered a terrible accident. Yet he has never admitted any responsibility for the deaths, and in that sense I consider him dishonest.
The pilot holds the most responsibility for the deaths...he was aware of the height he would be flying at and the explosives and that the 2 small children would be right under him....that piece of crap spielberg was the 1 who didn't want to use union kids so he paid the parents under the table to use the kids after midnight. Steven also ran like hell when the deaths occured..befor the police showed up !!!!
@clev9980 I had a problem with the FAA when a helicopter landed in a school yard almost chopped childrens heads off and shook my walls they gave me all this bs that there is no minimum altitude for a helicopter to hover at they leave it at the pilots discretion
@clev9980 That is factually incorrect. Frank Marshall was on the film site, not Steven Spielberg, and Marshall left the set immediately and never gave any deposition in the case, though they tried to subpoena him several times. George Folsey, Jr. hired the children and paid their parents under the table.
When I saw Vic Morrow name, I knew what this vid would be. I decide not to continue watching the rest of video. Vic Morrow is the father of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.
It's not the fact that it was so long ago, it's the fact that he was joking about it AT ALL that makes it so bad. Joking about two kids dying, or anyone dying, especially in such a horrible way, is horrendous.
with so many other clearer versions on youtube why would some choose to watch this overly dramatic shitty version? this video is 5 minutes too long...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sad thing is they still used this story in the movie and the families of the actors never got compensated. Typical Jew move by Speilberg and Landis those cheap insensitive bastards.
What a piece of fucking trash this motherfucker Landis is. Endangering people and specially kids like this and going away with ( literally ) murder. These kind of "people" makes me sick and I wish him the worst of deaths, that punk.
Very good film, unfortunately it has been forgotten. One thing that was wrong in film. The rules were not changed.....the rules already existed and ignored. You forgot to mention that none of the higher up People were found guilty in this "accident"
@UofLCardFan08 They purposely violated California State Child Labor Laws. No, it was not plan but safety measures put in place to stop such an event were ignored and people died due to the fact that the law was broken.
I can't believe how much this made me cry. This truly was tragic and shocking.I have never known anything more horrific to happen on a movie set, and to two young children, and also to an actor that I like very much.It could have been prevented. If things were being handled more professionaly and with more precaution. It was so terrifying for me to see three people alive one minute and then instantly die in the next. RIP Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Le Chen. You will all be sadly missed.

@Zanmatt2g No, unfortunately, this is NOT fake. How could you ask such a question? Go Google it. It REALLY happened! Why would somebody make up such a terrible story about a real actor dying like this if it wasn't really true?
speechless...and to think the story in the movie of which this scene was for, was about all different racists and bigots trying to kill vic thru all different eras, add to the fact its the twilight zone movie..things like this make ya wonder..creepy and eerie
I've seen this footage not so saturated by all the constant bursts of fiery light that render the incident all but indistinguishable in the clips you've used. I think your presentation would have been more powerful if you'd used a better quality clip, some of which are readily available online.
Other than that you've done a good job summarizing the incident and its ramifications.
@laneatlileden= It ends with him back in Nazi occupied France. The Germans catch him, mark him as a Jew, and thow him on a train Auschwitz, or some other death camp in the east.
omg i feel sad for the kid lee and the other kid being decapited i feel is one of the worst to die cause you dont stay in one peace i hope the death was atlease fast and painless
this landis guy should have been taken out back stoned for a hour or two an the had the blood let out his body. wtf they were to close to the explosions even with out the threat of the helicopter. that dude is trash.
Hollywood refused to ban him because his movies made money and money talks in Tinseltown. Spielberg was right to terminate his friendship with this arrogant prick. I will say that it did one thing right.. it open the industry's eye on taking safety seriously. while there have been random accidents and a few deaths, Brandon Lee and the stunt women from Vampire of Brooklyn, there has been nothing of this magnitude and lets pray there never will be again.
@bigtdaddyt63 i'm with you on this one...spielberg did the right thing. i work as a camera operator in l.a. and i've turned down a job to work with this jerk of a landis. in my heart he was guilty of their deaths.
@planthi80 guess some of these Hollywood guys have no soul. Those poor children and Vic Morrow was a very talented actor with a wife and children. His daughter has done well in Hollywood as well. I can't imagine growing up knowing that my father died that way. So sad.
@bigtdaddyt63 I was Vic Morrow's girl friend at the time of the accident and know how Vic felt about what was happening on the set...........Till now I have never said anything, as I returned to the UK after his funeral.....He would come home from the night shoots, very concerned about what was happening on the set. One night it was about the use of live ammunition, the other was being in the water for to long and more.......All the call sheets for that night mysteriously disappeared,
@dancetrudyjane there was some interview where vic said the director landis was bonkers because he fired tracers at people instead of into the dirt I know a guy who works on the stock exchange who noticed vic when he visited there
Not only did Hollywood lose two beautiful children and a truly gifted actor who was totally opposite of the characters he played, Jennifer Jason leigh lost a father. there have been numerous stories over the years, up to this accident and since, of Landis' disregard for rules on sets.
Not only did Hollywood lose two beautiful children and a truly gifted actor who was totally opposite of the characters he played, Jennifer Jason leigh lost a father. there have been numerous stories over the years, up to this accident and since, of Landis' disregard for rules on sets.
Troll2Rocks, I commend you for the way you put this video together.
This accident was a sad and terrible thing, made all the worse by knowing that it could have been avoided if Landis had shown better judgment. That he didn't go to jail is mind boggling.
I never understood why people on youtube are blaming Spielberg for this? I've seen quite a few people fuming that SS never apologized for this event. The man didn't direct this story, wasn't even on set. He cut off his friendship with Landis cause of this.
Spielberg was the producer and he knew of Landis's disregard for film set safety even before the accident.
He should have fired Landis or never hired him to begin with but Jews stick together so he couldn't do that. Spielberg has a net worth over a billion dollars.
Why didn't he give the families of the victims some compensation? Really tacky and cheesy of him to leave the story in the movie. Very disrespectful of the victims families. Now do you understand nitwit??
I really wonder if Michael Jackson knew about this befor he hired Landis. I seriously doubt it tho because be claimed he never watched any of his movies but American Warewolf. And back then everyone seem like they were cool about Landis directing thriller, i guess they mustve forgot what happen 1yr ago. This news is sooo underated, After 19 yrs of living, why am i just hearing about this today. Sounds like everyone who lived in 1982 got a case of amnesia a few years later.
@Kierrafresh13 John Landis's career was terminated after the twilight zone movie! he also lost his friendship with steven spielberg, cuz Landis was using live ammunition as well hours before the helicopter crash!
@meanmachine210 On the set of 'The Crow', Brandon Lee was shot for real and died. The crew tried to make dummy cartridges out of real ones, but didn't do it properly and voila.
why the fuck is landis still working in hollywood? he should be in prison. Did michael jackson know he endangered the lives of these small childrem and mr. morrow. I hope the families sued the shit out of landis and the studio. landis should never work again gross negligence. sorry motherfucker. i don think jackson knew this. maybe he did and didnt care. mmmm?
@mruhopper -Thanks...unfortunately you didn't get my incredibly tasteless joke. I am saying Jackson needed props for his upcoming video "Thriller"....
@SuperThunderlips i know you commented this a month ago but come on!! We allllllll kno Michael jackson had NOTHING to do with this accident. Thirller was taped in 83.
I made a tasteless joke about Michael Jackson needing "BODIES" for his "THRILLER VIDEO" which was not "MADE YET" a point you and others seem to be stuck on!!!!

All one has to do is get the accident reports from the Screen Actors Guild. Transformers 3 not even the most recent injury....

It's not the fact that it was so long ago, it's the fact that he was joking about it AT ALL that makes it so bad. Joking about two kids dying, or anyone dying, especially in such a horrible way, is horrendous.

Hollywood refused to ban him because his movies made money and money talks in Tinseltown. Spielberg was right to terminate his friendship with this arrogant prick. I will say that it did one thing right.. it open the industry's eye on taking safety seriously. while there have been random accidents and a few deaths, Brandon Lee and the stunt women from Vampire of Brooklyn, there has been nothing of this magnitude and lets pray there never will be again.
bigtdaddyt63 1 year ago 29
@bigtdaddyt63 i'm with you on this one...spielberg did the right thing. i work as a camera operator in l.a. and i've turned down a job to work with this jerk of a landis. in my heart he was guilty of their deaths.
planthi80 1 year ago 28
@planthi80 guess some of these Hollywood guys have no soul. Those poor children and Vic Morrow was a very talented actor with a wife and children. His daughter has done well in Hollywood as well. I can't imagine growing up knowing that my father died that way. So sad.
Alilrebelchick 1 year ago
@bigtdaddyt63 I was Vic Morrow's girl friend at the time of the accident and know how Vic felt about what was happening on the set...........Till now I have never said anything, as I returned to the UK after his funeral.....He would come home from the night shoots, very concerned about what was happening on the set. One night it was about the use of live ammunition, the other was being in the water for to long and more.......All the call sheets for that night mysteriously disappeared,
dancetrudyjane 6 months ago
@dancetrudyjane But shortly after I returned to the UK, I was sent a package and inside was Vic's call sheet.......I have kept it safe!
dancetrudyjane 6 months ago
@dancetrudyjane there was some interview where vic said the director landis was bonkers because he fired tracers at people instead of into the dirt I know a guy who works on the stock exchange who noticed vic when he visited there

Not only did Hollywood lose two beautiful children and a truly gifted actor who was totally opposite of the characters he played, Jennifer Jason leigh lost a father. there have been numerous stories over the years, up to this accident and since, of Landis' disregard for rules on sets.

I never understood why people on youtube are blaming Spielberg for this? I've seen quite a few people fuming that SS never apologized for this event. The man didn't direct this story, wasn't even on set. He cut off his friendship with Landis cause of this.
Swazi4 1 year ago 4
Spielberg was the producer and he knew of Landis's disregard for film set safety even before the accident.
He should have fired Landis or never hired him to begin with but Jews stick together so he couldn't do that. Spielberg has a net worth over a billion dollars.
Why didn't he give the families of the victims some compensation? Really tacky and cheesy of him to leave the story in the movie. Very disrespectful of the victims families. Now do you understand nitwit??
toscodav 10 months ago
@toscodav they did get compensation the families settled out of court hense, why no one went to prison.
