  • did someone finally hack the zi8 firmware?

  • @jampop77 I don't know. I do know that Kodak updated the original firmware to fix a problem with stuttered digital zoom, but I don't know of any effective hacks in the wild. There has been interest in a hack that would allow the device to become a more functional media player, as well as a reported hack that would create a faux 3D effect in the footage, but I don't know anything about the validity of these claims. I believe there are device-centric user group forums developing to discuss these.

  • @lunarparcel im interested in a hack that will increase the bits/sec allowing it to record more than twice the stock quality! thank you for your answer!

  • @jampop77 Actually, that sounds like a very admirable hack - though I haven't yet heard of one along those lines. Despite my love for this device's ability to record audio from an external mic, there's something to be desired from it's inherent audio compression scheme (even with high quality mics). There is a developing Zi8 user group at zi8zone.com. If such a hack shows up, it will likely be discussed there. Check it out. If you discover such a hack, please let me know. I'd be interested.

  • @lunarparcel thnak you, sure i will. i just wanna make sure i was talking about video quality.

  • Great Colors! A little shaky on the tracking during the panning, but what do ya want for less than 200 bucks! I'll definitely be considering buying one in the near future.

  • Yeah, I've learned that such a small and light-wight image capture device requires a more concerted discipline in maintaining a steady hand. More difficult than I thought when there is no real counter-weight for balance.

  • I have heard that the "shaky-ness" is inherent inall small flip-cams, due to the image tracking, ....not your actual panning handiwork; I meant no offense whatsoever.

(FYI my info/source: A blue-clad being of superior intelligence at Best Buy)

  • This device, and CMOS units like it sometimes demonstrate such anomalies due to an inherent flaw in the rolling shutter processing, and is often made worse if using a smoothcam filter in an editing app, making straight lines crooked and curved when panning. I didn't use such a filter when importing, so it wasn't as bad, but the onboard stabilizer was active, and it is pretty ineffective. This one was shot at 720p 30fps, but I understand that 720p 60fps (also an option) is better for such motion.

  • @lunarparcel You been talkin to the blue-clad superior being, too?

  • He doth grunteth wisdom with utterings of "It says HD so it must be good, brah." and compelleth me to purchase extended warranties of dubious value.

  • @lunarparcel Me thinks thou doth grunteth much!?

  • Indeed.

  • hahaha

  • @backflip369159 Thank you for your comment, but I am unable to understand it, nor detect its meaning through any web translation mechanism that I know of.

    Sorry.
