why do you ever believe rice and milk porridge is from norway, when its a swedish national dish, is a riddle to me. We serve it with cinnamon and sugar, and its delicious. A game from around 1700ish includes hiding an almond in the porridge, and whoever gets the almond gets a wish.
@aubreyaardvark Do we talk of the same Ritchie Blackmore?!? I think he becomes better and better even today. Watch the Paris Moon videos by Blackmore's Night. Ritchies playing is just epic!
Originally it was a music piece for the Pere Gynt suite by Edvard Grieg, a popular classical piece. It never had lyrics and doesn't need them but if it did these would be about as good as it gets but Ian Gillan would be better to sing this I think and more screaming and struting around like I'm the mountain king.
So....are there three different songs called something like "Hall of the Mountain King" (Rainbow, Apocalyptica, Savatage)? Are they the same song? Actually, the Apocalyptica song sounds suspiciously like this one. Is there some relation? I am very confused.
if blackmore had no tallent..i'd hate him...grieg is one of my favorite composers..and blackmore is one of the best guitar players on earth...thanks for posting
For those of you who wanna know about this song: The original piece is actually made by a norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. And the original norwegian title would be "I Dovregubbens Hall" Dovregubbe does not translate into King. But "dovregubbe" is kinda typical norwegian fairy tale style of wording so I don't know how to translate it.
In Norway this song often is used in fairy tales involving trolls.
In the original classical song the main notes are played on a cello.
Yep, that song is known by almost every norwegian person. You can't possible live through a childhood without hearing that song. Multiple times actually :) And it's been used in various norwegian commercials involving porridge. Porridge is a meal trolls often eat in our fairy tales.
Dude, I really sound like a nerd'O here, but no kidding most norwegians could tell you this haha. Please believe me!
To be honest, I don't know much about him. I'd have to read about him, cause I don't remember. But what would be the point of that, when you can read it yourself? :D
@DonQuixotec hah, maybe thats why hall of the mountain king is my favorite classical piece. I'm of Norwegian decent but raised in the USA. For some reason I just fell in love with the song at an early age.
@DonQuixotec I am completely serious and not taking the mickey out of you. I really like that you shared that. I love knowing things about other cultures from mine. I think that that is wicked funny that trolls eat porridge!!
@DancesWithJoy One of the most known stories is where a famous norwegian fairy tale character gets threatened to be killed by a troll, and he challenges him for a porridge eating contest (it is known that the trolls can't say no to that). And the main character puts his backpack under his sweater on his stomach and when he eats he puts most of the porridge in the backpack instead of his mouth. So he wins, and the troll is so full of porridge that he is slow and sick, and he kills the troll haha!
@banished8910 Norwegian porridge is a special type of rice boiled in milk, until it is semi-solid. The rice expands and the milk thickens and it gets the consistency of rice pudding almost. Actually porridge is like warm rice pudding haha. And then we sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top and have a "eye" of butter in the middle. I promise you, it's delicious. Porridge is also well known in England. Not just Norway.
You can also make oat porridge, wich is more healthy. Normal for breakfast.
Dovregubbe consists of two words, "Dovre", a Norwegian mountain range, and "gubbe" meaning man. In this context, it means the "owner" of Dovre, so in that sense, Mountain King is not a bad translation.
Blackmore = God (greatest most influential guitarist ever), but man what was dougie doing near the end reaching up to the sky?? the whole song kinda tripped me out....maby i can sell the video to schoolkids who wanna know what an acid trip is like for some profit :)
