  • thanks a ton! my old 8700 burned out and i upped it to the dual 8800! you saved my a lot of money. laptop shops didn't wanna mess with me cause the computer cost so much they didn't want to be liable! keep up these great videos for the xps i look to get a long life from mine!

  • Thanks for this so much, we followed these videos religiously while taking apart our 1730. Many thanks!

  • Excellent tutorial. I used it to do a replacement. Great job, easy to see and understand. THANK YOU.

  • @iftibashir Happen to know if the Studio XPS 1645 has it's ATI Radeon 4670 soldered on it's mother board?

  • @dudeman3337 I have that laptop, It's not, but the only other video card is the 5730, It's not a very good card at all from the one I have at least, I have an m1730 too, and it's 20 times better and the only differences are the studio has a better processor but the m1730 has an nVidia video card.

  • my m1530 gpu got really bad heat damage and isn't working properly anymore. I need to get a new one, but I have no clue how to replace it if its soldered on D:

    some help please?

    nice videos by the way.

  • @satanreborn666 - At the time I purchased a second system - lowest spec possible but with the 8800 card installed. I then swapped the cards and sold the lower spec system on!

Keep an eye out on places like eBay - they sometimes pop up on there....

  • Man your videos are awesome. I just watched one on putting in two hard drives w/ raid 0 set up. :D

question tho, could i do a similar replacement (with a different vid card) in a xps M1530? and if so is the video card located in the same general area as your M1730?

  • @midwestsbest1 - No the M1530 is completely different. I believe the GPU is soldered onto the mainboard, and not upgradeable unless the entire mainboard is also upgraded.....

  • I watched both parts and I don't even own this machine. What's wrong with me :(

  • @AlexPlaysGames - lol!

  • @AlexPlaysGames lol same here we must be insane

  • my 8800 card burnt out about 2 weeks ago today i put it in my oven for 10 mins on 200c and i let it cool down then i removed all the thermal paste and put some new paste on and it actuall worked so if anyones card does burn out i suggest you do that its worked for loads of people.

  • Described in 2 ways on the website :

    2 x NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GT

    2 x 512MB 2 x NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GT Graphics Card

Does 2 x mean that it's SLI? Is this the same as the graphics card your installing on this laptop? The laptop I'm after is the £650 M1730 on UK Laptops. Please help.

  • @Chris265265 - Correct - both are the same thing. The 8800 card only comes in SLI on this system. The 8700 came in a single chip and SLI.

  • @iftibashir

So this laptop I want, is definatly the same graphics card as your installing here? But what shocks me, is that for £650, it has a graphics card in the top 20 graphics cards on Notebookcheck. I am just getting a little confused because it does not state it has SLI. There is the same laptop, but with a slightly bigger hard drive and 1gb more ram, for £670, and it does say SLI enabled.

  • @Chris265265 - the 8800 only came in the SLI configuration on this machine, so you should be fine. the bigger HDD and more RAM for only £20 extra is a no brainer, you may as well go for that!

  • Hye there, where in the hell do you buy a GeForce 8800m GTX SLI GPU these days?

  • @MuhammadEveryonesMom - They are pretty hard to find to be honest. Try Dell, or a reseller (eBay??).

  • hi, i bought a Phyx card off ebay, but still not too sure weather i should open this up and install it, does the Phyx card makes a lot of difference for video? and does it support all games?

  • @IgnoredComment - The card goes in right next to the graphics card - so you can follow my graphics card upgrade video to open the system and install the card. Whether its worth it is really up to you to decide, but when I ha dthis system few games actually supported a physics card. Do the games you wish to run support it? If not, it'll be pretty useless....

  • hi i was wondering if its worth getting dis laptop as i wnna play games like cod mw2 on my laptop nd others, btw can i upgrade 2 i3 or i5 nd get a new graphics card nd is this possible?

  • are you trying to make a like scaled down gaming notebook

  • @shinyLucario36 - This IS a gaming notebook.

  • ohh dude Thank you so much for that text explaining all to me . I got it working :D

  • Thank you soooooo much for this video.

I just finished changing out a faulty 8800GTX with the help of your video.

  • Is it really worth to ugrade to the 8800mGTX from the 8700m GT ?

  • YES!!

It will make a HUGE difference to gameplay and frame rates.

  • yeah but there's a HUGE cost involved relatively speaking!

  • @tpmaster21 It does make a huge difference, check a site called notebookcheck, the 8700 is in one of the lowest graphics cards, 8800 can run almost all games on high settings, even ultra!

  • can you still buy the 8800's for the 1730?

  • Great job!! Very informative video.

  • can you still buy the m1730 from dell in the united states? i can't find it on the website.. and i really want one i dont know why they would take them off it's a very nice computer, please reply if your know anything, thanks and nice video

  • I live in British Columbia, Canada... anywhere near you? haha

  • lol, other side of the world!!! lol

  • haha that's what I figured

  • Lol i live in alberta im beside you! im 14 and i do all this stuff myself no problems (so far) of course if we ever did meet you would probably never let me near your laptop! lol but im perfectly fine doing any of this myself.

  • haha your correct about me probably not letting you near my laptop but i appreciate the offer

  • haha xD

  • I'm pretty sure I'd bring this in to be done for me.... I'd be way too nervous that I'd screw something up

  • If you're anywhere near me I'd do it for you ;o)

  • i live in Texas, but my cousin in New Mexico, is a real computer wiz he builds em for a living. The best part IS he does for me FREE! [not including shipping from NM, to Dallas, Tx] im currently awaiting a computer i sent him a while back [he takes his sweet time]

  • @yeldarb65 u do realize the 8800gtx card cost as much as the m1730 without the card right? lol

  • OMG, that card must have cost you 400 quid minimum.

  • Willa dell 1520 inspiron accept any other video card other than a 8600m gt 256mb ? if so how?

  • Where can i get the card???

  • Try ebay or contact dell

  • Do you have to reformat and reinstall. What about repartition the hard disk to make room for the new version of MediaDirect, which is a bit larger?

    thanks

  • where can I purchase this card?

  • iftibashir what is going on with your forum???????

  • Sorry mate. Didnt bother renewing the webspace, dont hav ethe time right now TBH and the forum wasnt getting very far! :o(

Im still around through here though ;o)

  • Looks easy but you have to be very careful.

  • where can I buy parts for the m1730? cant really say they have the biggest selection in my country. I'm looking for the graphics card upgrade and the bluray optical drive.

  • can anyone tell me if i can upgrade mine with the latest ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4870 Crossfire? I have the NVidia 8700 right now.

  • i just had a question i just bought a m9750 and wanted to know if its possible for me to upgrade the gpu it has the 8700m gt and if i can where could i buy a new gpu

  • ok mate, my question is: Can I change the graphics card of my notebook, which its a toshiba satellite p305d-s8828 to a highre one? It has an ATI Radeon, but id like to switch it to a NVIDIA, so can I do this?

  • Nope changing the graphics card can only be done on Dells; I have Toshiba to.

  • ok now I'm not that computer savey so don't be harsh so let me get this straight you can put in a better graphics card with only certain laptops but you have to download with others

  • You can upgrade the graphics chip on certain notebooks. You dont download graphics cards - you download the drivers that enable the cards to work to the best possible standard.

  • Yeh this video will come in handy to alot of ppl. What are the chances of damageing the laptop when u take all the parts and cables apart? Sounds like a daft question but i just wanna know.

  • Some cables are very fragile. If you dont have a soft touch, dont try it!

  • THANX SO MUCH! And BTW where can i buy the 8800m Gtx Upgrade cards?

  • go to dells website

  • thanks m8, im gonna upgrade my gfx card on my vostro 1500 to a 8600m gt i think the procedure is pretty much similar

  • WRONG you must make sure your computer is compatable with that grafics card

  • Checked it out for you You dell Vostro 1500 is not compatable with such a card other then its 128MB 8400M GS. Dont upgrade or it mgith not work. such as not enofe power on laptop or motherboard may not support. the Highest is 128MB.

  • i upgrade it already :P dell doesn't sell them with 8600m gt s now but it actually supports it

  • Well goodluck with that then

  • I work for DELL and replacing the MUDDA BOAD on these systems is a tuff job!

  • I dont think you do with that spelling.

  • lolz I als0 drive a BENT...aka Mercedes Benz. I advise every consumer to get this system. It's great but it weighs a ton and kinda difficult to get around with. The video card weighs a TON!

  • fuck....who needs a desktop?!?!

    when you have this!

  • lol, exactly why I dont have a desktop and use this as my desktop replacement ;o)

  • Dude, do you still get Service from Dell?

Because you openend the Notebook.. please write back :)

  • But i mean with "open" that you upgraded the HDD, etc. :D

  • You can open dell's because dell warrentise individual parts, you only break your warrenty if you cause any damage in the process

  • can we upgrade the 8600GT in XPS m1530 to a better graphic card??

  • can we upgrade the video card 8600 GT in dell XPS m1530 to any better video card??

  • Hi. If anyone has any questions they would like answered, please message me so I can give you a more direct response ;o) Many thanks.

  • hey where did you get the 8800 graphics card cause i'll upgrade mine

  • i want the 8800 SLI but now whit the new

9800GX2 i wait can upgrade my 1730 o my PC more power what 8800.

  • huh ??????????

i thought they only sell notebook gpu's to big companys since notebook gpu's dosnt have alot of customers!!! if u know what i mean

  • Can you do a video with gaming benchmarks as well as CPU benchmarks. Thanks!!

  • 1 more thing, my laptop has a single 8700m gt, not sli, so will it support the graphics card show? Im not sure if the motherboard is sli enabled.

  • Yes you can still upgrade to a SLI card - although from the single 8700 to the SLI 8800 will be much more costly.

  • so all xps1730's are sli compatible as standard?

p.s. great video, it was actually so helpful and really spot on. Thanx for the help :D

  • Yes correct. Even if you ordered it with the single card, the SLI card will still work since you will be using a driver that supports SLI.

  • So.. where can u get the card?

Cos no one would sell Mobile GPU cards on retail shops

should i buy it from DELL only for the card?

  • Only Dell offer this upgrade to their customers who have bought M1730. Anything bellow that will not work.

  • also, i'm really curious as to where to get an 8800m gtx, its annoying that they'r available in a laptop but not by themselves. I know a dell parts supplyer who built my xps1730 so if i they can get me the card ill upload their contact details.

  • soz how did you overclock your processor?

  • In the BIOs - only available to the Extreme X7900 processor.

  • Ok i have a t7500 processor (2.2ghz), i tried overclocking it with rivatuner but it didnt seem to work, and it doesn't give me the option to overclock in the start up confg (f2 screen). How did you overclock your's?

  • You can only factory overclock the Extreme processor from 2.8 to 3.4GHz via the BIOs. You cant overclock the others. If I want to overclock mine, I hav ethe settings available to me in the BIOs, where I can just set whichever speed I prefer.

  • BIOS = Basic Input Output System

It's not a plural of anything, it's an acronym! :)

  • Slightly off-topic. Would you recommend overclocking the processor. If so how much would you suggest is safe? Would it lower your laptop's life expectancy?

Your videos are a great help.

  • I overclocked my CPU to 3.4GHz only to run a benchmark test with 3DMark06, which gave me just over 14,100. But the CPU fan is on constantly at full speed, which is noisy! I dont see the need to overclock the CPU just yet TBH. It handles anything you throw at it perfectly fine.

  • How did you get that 8800m gtx??

  • Hi hlaifs,

i can answer this, I asked same question on another of his videos. He bought another m1730 xps with the 8800 and then switch the cards with the older one.

I can't afford to do that and I am having trouble finding the cards. No response from Nvidia and Dell tells me that they'll call me when the 'upgrade' is available. - i'll try to update this and will definitively will up date my review of the xps when I find an avenue to get them.

  • Correct. I bought a low spec M1730 with the 8800 card, and switched cards with my top spec machine ;)

  • Do you have any benches ?

  • Using stock Dell drivers, with no overclocking whatsoever, using 3DMark06 I get just under 13,000.

All the following run at 1920x1200, with all settings at max - Gears of War (60-62FPS), NFS ProStreet (55-60FPS), Bioshock (70FPS+), Company of Heroes (45-55FPS). as I said, all at the highest settings possible.

  • Thanks for this video. I look forward to getting the new cards in... just finding them is going to be the problem ;)
