@TannerBitches Sure. 1) Set the camera to aperture priority [A] and dial it down as low as your lens will go. 2) Put your subject in front of a background where nothing is behind them for at least 10+ feet. 3) Focus on their face 4) Get blur. :-)
@BrandonCaribStyle98 Here's the nice thing about a beginner DSLR like the D3100: you don't need to know anything technical to start using it. You put it in "green box" mode and just press the shutter release. It has built-in guides that will help you learn how to do certain things, such as getting a blurred background. If you're looking to take a first step into photography, this is a good start.
Auto-focus isn't an option for me when im shooting videos and I don't know why.
I've tried shooting a video and focusing at the same time but then it either stops the video completely and takes a photo or when i play back the video, theres this sound that goes on (from the focusing) and it's really fustrating. I have no idea what to do!
Jason, I am planning to buy D3100 without lens. Which is the best lens you will suggest me to use with this cam. I am purely an amateur photographer and completely new to DSLR. My understanding is 18-55 lense is good only to shoot closer objects or can I get a zoom equavalent to 5X in digital cam using this lens??
We're just about to buy a D3100. We were lookin at the Cannon EOS1100D, But having tried em in the shop we prefer the feel of the nikon. We found ur review very helpful.
@peanutguy1 Only some of what you see are things I've purchased; many are loaners from the company. I review them and send them back within a few weeks.
@tamaraentertainment I bought it separately. In this unboxing video I show the 18-55mm lens, which is what it came with. Usually people watch the video before they ask questions. ;-)
Hey is this a good DSLR for real beginners? Like I really dont know that much about dslrs yet and I'm looking for my first one. ( I will be using it mostly for film making btw but I'll do photography too. )
awesome review man, so much more detail and helpful information than other reviews. this has nothing to do with the review but where are you from? your accent is awesome :-)
@ThoughtsMedia thats a pretty sweet place, i been on holiday there, my uncle used to live there :-) once again awesome review, got this camera on order ;-)
Im about to buy this camera, its going to be my first, but the thing i wanna know is, Can I take pictures with this camera from afar? like setting a time on the camera for it to take pictures itself? it might help with family portraits wih everyone in it! Please reply asap!
Hiya Jason, this is a really interesting unboxing video but my only complaint would be that the text hilights that you put up on screen need to be up for at least 10 seconds, i have to keep rewinding the video to read what you say. Great camera though and i bought mine yesterday
@mickeyboy929 Thanks for the feedback - I leave the text up for as long as I think it will take someone to read it, but everyone reads at different rates so it's hard to pick the perfect length of time. If I leave it up for too long, it distracts people from what's on the screen. My only suggestion would be to pause it when you see text.
@SnowLifeProd Yes, you can focus manually - most lenses have a switch that you toggle for auto-focus/manual focus. I wouldn't shoot sports on a camera that can only do 3 frames per second - that's pretty slow. There are ways an experienced photographer can compensate for slow FPS (anticipating the action), but it's not always easy. You should look at the D7000 (6 FPS) or a used D300 + battery grip (8 FPS).
Hi ! Thanks for doing such an amazing video ! I decided to go for my first DSRL cam and i j got the Nikon D3100..But since im new on Photografhy i a have a doubt, if a have a 4gb SD Card (and since i will be shooting on RAW) and a i want to save space, but keep image quality. ¿do i get a lower quality of the picture if i decided to shoot on 8-10 Mpx instead of the 14.2 ? .... of course i good solution is buying another card, but i have this doubt. Thanks a Lot (sorry about my english jeje)
@Boy22100 Keep the resolution at maximum - always. You can't re-capture resolution after the fact, and what if you end up with an amazing photo but because you captured it at a lower resolution you can't print it as big as you want? SD cards are dirt cheap - you can get a 16 GB Patriot LX Class 10 card for $33 from NewEgg. You didn't just spend $500+ only to compromise by taking images smaller than what the sensor can achieve. :-)
I just bought this same exact make and model with the 18-55 mm VR lens and the 55-200 VR lens 2 lens kit the whole works only paid 589.00 bucks from Dell computers I have the D100 the D70 and this little camera is awesome compared to the D100 and D70 it has way more featuers. I started years ago with minolta Maxxum film cameras I bought all brand new still have then and still use them I love film and digital photography.
What camera do u think is better for me d3100 or d3000, if my priority is high image quality, and I dont need movie recording, and can live without live view? So basically my question is which one of these two have better image quality with provided lenses. Im a beginner.
@Petra1990191 Without a doubt, the D3100 has a better image sensor. The D5100 is better still, then the D7000, etc...I don't think I've ever seen a new camera that doesn't improve image sensor performance.
I m using lens 18:55 and very new to this cam .. but I dont know why I cannot take a portrait phto with blur background even if I use lower f values ..
@kimskams80 You need a lens with a lower f/stop value (f/1.8). Or, rack out to full zoom, get fairly close to your subject, and make sure they're far away from any background.
Jason, thank you for responding. More than likely, today is the day I'll be making my first DSLR purchase and I'm still conflicted on which camera to get. Granted, I'll probably end up the proud owner of a D3100. Let me ask you one more question if I may: What do you think of the Pentax K-R compared to the D3100? Thank you!
Jason, What's your opinion on the low resolution rear LCD screen? I'm going to be buying my first DSLR this Friday. I love the Nikon's price but I'm really leaning toward spending the extra cash on the Canon T2i, specifically for the million plus dot LED. Would you recommend spending the extra money? Any opinion you could give would be great, thank you. Great reviews!!
@82mccord While I like having the high-res LCD screen on my D300, unless you're planning on shooting a lot of video with the D3100 - where the higher-res screen would help you check focus and whatnot - I don't think it should weigh heavily in your purchasing decision...certainly not when it comes down to one lens system over another (Nikon vs. Canon). You're going to be editing and sharing your photos on screens other than the camera I'd hope. :-)
Nice camera and nice review but you talk TOO fast as if you've took some few Redbull before you recorded that review and so you're like overexciting even though it is for such nice camera :P
@dude2106 How about a father who's taking a picture of his sleeping baby, or being in a church or scenario where being quiet and unobtrusive was key? That's why I like having the option.
im hoping to do a photography a level (i think it contains alt of black and white work) and i really love this camera, would you recommend it for this? if so what kind of lens would be best? im sorry for all the questions but i do find so much of this confusing xD thank you :) xx
@smilingcat201 It really depends on the photography. I'm a fan of prime lenses, so get the NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8 lens and that will be a great lens for learning photography.
@TheDanieljjc Kit lenses are a good place to start, but they're generally crap. You won't realize that though for a while until you use more expensive glass. ;-)
great video! I've seen like a dozen now and this is the first one that really shows me how to move around the D3100. I wasn't sure between the Canon T3 and the Nikon D3100 (mainly cause of prize vs tech) but now I know I want this one. Please upload more videos like this.
PS, I'm from Chile, I hope it does't come with any glitches since I'm shipping it from the US.
@sasktank I'm not sure what Aperture Simulation mode is. There's Aperture Priority mode, which I didn't demonstrate because, well, there's not really much to show. You set the dial, you take a picture. :-) If you have a 7D, the D3100 isn't a comparable camera. The D7000 is (though it's cheaper).
@jtownstomp Bokeh is a Japanese word to describe the characteristics of the background blur you get when you shoot with a large aperture (f/1/.8, 2.8, etc.).
Hi Jason! May I know what's the battery life of this camera is like? I'm not a pro or anything but I hate running out of batt when I'm traveling. Thank you. :)
@aifusatiluj The CIPA rating is 550 shots. I'd say in practical use it should be good for several days worth of casual shooting. If you're doing serious shooting, the D3100 isn't the right camera for you to begin with. ;-)
@ThoughtsMedia Thank you Jason. My hubby bought D5100 instead before out trip to SG. We just got back from Singapore. Took pics at Night Safari and Universal Studios. Love the camera. He upgraded the SD card to 36GB. But I think I'd need to buy a spare battery and I'm all set for my next adventure. Thanks
Great video but question: Did the camera come with a USB connector? I mean how am I supposed to upload the photos to the computer and to facebook etc, if it doesnt come with the USB charger..or could you just put the USB card into the computer? sorry, not very experienced person here.
@xlacostegirlx You take out the memory card and put it into the SD card reader on your computer/laptop. If you have a desktop computer without a memory card reader, you buy one. And since this is the fifth time I've answered this question, I guess I'd better add an annotation to the video. :-)
@MontenegroDJsOffical No, that's not something I do when I review a camera. Do a Web search for "Nikon D3100 sample photos" and you'll find plenty. The blur you're referring to is all about the lens and less about the camera though...
Also these people will be flying by me and doing jumps so I don't think auto focus is fast enough! Can u tell me how to use manual focus and is manual focus kinda like how to use binoculars?
I have a question for u! I just bought this camera and I do motocross so I bought this camera to Take some sick pics of my friends! I've seen amazing pics online! I heard this camera will work great but what settings and iso and all should I use for outdoor motocross and I should add that I'm a beginner and im using default lens!
@aidanalter I'm afraid teaching photography is outside the bounds of YouTube comments. A couple quick tips though: I'd put it in shutter priority mode - likely 1/250th of a second, maybe faster - and if you want to get a manual focus lock, you'll need something up in the same area where the jumps will be to focus on first. The problem with the kit lens is that you'll have to get dangerously close if you want close-up shots. I'd rent a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens when you're ready. Practice lots!
Hi Jason!!! This vid made me get one yesterday!!! :) Question: Does it make a sound when it's locked on in the focus in the M,S,A,P modes?? Thanks!!!! :)
@thecoolguy771 I double-checked on my D3100, and it does in fact beep when it gets a focus lock. Unless you've somehow turned that off - which is possible - I'd say to call Nikon tech support ASAP.
@toughtsMedia,i am in a mood to buy this one,i want to ask that can it make more video then 1o mins like ulimited timings ? if so not why ? and is its video quality better then todays hnadycam sony .these r full hd too. but which will make more better videos ? and about the recording sound in the video is it good to shoot videos like commersials in which we need high clear sounds. please reply thank you :)
@IJvevo The 10 minute limit is per video, not total on the camera. There's no way to get around that; the reason why has to do with the sensor design (heat), buffer size, marketing decisions, etc. You can't change it. Video quality is subjective; there will be things that you can do with the D3100 (such as shallow depth of field shots) that you can't do with a Sony video camera. For good quality audio, you want a different camera - one with external microphone input.
@ThoughtsMedia it has mono recording some thing. and they say its not better. sterio sound is more better. will it do the work for making good movies ? and is there a software in the camera that we can combine the 10 mins scene togehter ?
@IJvevo Forget mono versus stereo; it's about the quality of the audio capture. The on-board microphone is very basic; fine for simply clips of friends, but serious quality? No, not at all. As for the clips, you'd edit them in video editing software on a computer - you don't make a movie on the camera. I'd encourage you to do some more reading and research on the topic.
@ThoughtsMedia Oh Dear. i have done researchs about it and im mad of it. i dont know which to buy. do you know about nikon p500 ? actually my range is till this camera. And Realy i apperciate that atleast you replyed thanks alot man. And Realy helpfull videos there ^
@IJvevo Let me be blunt: you're not going to get high-quality audio from ANY camera that only uses a built-in microphone. If the D3100 is the upper limit of what you can afford, yet you need great-quality audio and video, then keep saving your money. Do a Web search for the D5100 and you might like what you find. That's all the help I can offer, so no more questions please. :-)
@dedarkle You take the memory card out of the camera and you put it in a memory card reader on your computer. If your computer lacks an SD card reader, you buy one.

Jaabiir 8 months ago
@Jaabiir I do talk fast - sorry about that. :-)

@ThoughtsMedia - it's okay mate, i understand and in the future do talk like put in some joke and laugh a bit to chill yourself and us also :)

Why would you like a quiet shutter? That is like buying a sportscar and fit it with a tight and quiet exhaust. Who would do that?
Okay if sit in your neighbors hedge spying on her it would probably be preferable, but really. Who does that?
I don't know if it is just me who have a shutter click fetish, but i just love that sound!
dude2106 8 months ago
@dude2106 How about a father who's taking a picture of his sleeping baby, or being in a church or scenario where being quiet and unobtrusive was key? That's why I like having the option.

@ThoughtsMedia Aaaah well good point indeed. : )
On another note, great review of the camera, the best i have found anywhere on the internet. Thanks!
dude2106 8 months ago
im hoping to do a photography a level (i think it contains alt of black and white work) and i really love this camera, would you recommend it for this? if so what kind of lens would be best? im sorry for all the questions but i do find so much of this confusing xD thank you :) xx
smilingcat201 8 months ago
@smilingcat201 It really depends on the photography. I'm a fan of prime lenses, so get the NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8 lens and that will be a great lens for learning photography.

i dont understand why it is so important that a camera designed to take picture to have video, if you want to record go buy a video camera
Darnellsolo 9 months ago
@Darnellsolo Pretty simple: why be forced to carry two devices when you can do a good job with both?
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 8 months ago 3
@Darnellsolo dslr's have a 1080p video quality like no other video camera, for example canon 5d mark 2, that camera is used in movies and ads.
Xlay16 8 months ago
What about the 18 -55 vr lens that's in the box how good is that zoom . :)
TheDanieljjc 9 months ago
@TheDanieljjc Kit lenses are a good place to start, but they're generally crap. You won't realize that though for a while until you use more expensive glass. ;-)
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 8 months ago
@Waterdropxwx You might be too close to the subject you're filming - every lens has a minimum focal distance.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 9 months ago
whats the zoom like what does it mach 15x 10x 20x 25x
TheDanieljjc 9 months ago
@TheDanieljjc That depends on what type of zoom lens you put on it. :-)

great video! I've seen like a dozen now and this is the first one that really shows me how to move around the D3100. I wasn't sure between the Canon T3 and the Nikon D3100 (mainly cause of prize vs tech) but now I know I want this one. Please upload more videos like this.
PS, I'm from Chile, I hope it does't come with any glitches since I'm shipping it from the US.
felipevf4 9 months ago
you didnt really show the apeture simulation mode...that is the only thing that would make me look at nikon since i have canon 7D
sasktank 9 months ago
@sasktank I'm not sure what Aperture Simulation mode is. There's Aperture Priority mode, which I didn't demonstrate because, well, there's not really much to show. You set the dial, you take a picture. :-) If you have a 7D, the D3100 isn't a comparable camera. The D7000 is (though it's cheaper).

what is "bokeh"
jtownstomp 9 months ago
@jtownstomp Bokeh is a Japanese word to describe the characteristics of the background blur you get when you shoot with a large aperture (f/1/.8, 2.8, etc.).

Hi Jason! May I know what's the battery life of this camera is like? I'm not a pro or anything but I hate running out of batt when I'm traveling. Thank you. :)
aifusatiluj 9 months ago
@aifusatiluj The CIPA rating is 550 shots. I'd say in practical use it should be good for several days worth of casual shooting. If you're doing serious shooting, the D3100 isn't the right camera for you to begin with. ;-)

@ThoughtsMedia Thank you Jason. My hubby bought D5100 instead before out trip to SG. We just got back from Singapore. Took pics at Night Safari and Universal Studios. Love the camera. He upgraded the SD card to 36GB. But I think I'd need to buy a spare battery and I'm all set for my next adventure. Thanks

what is an external mic? like audio picked up during video?
hndlz 10 months ago
@hndlz A microphone that's external to the camera - such as a clip-on microphone, or a shotgun microphone that attaches to the top of the camera.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 10 months ago
Does it have an input for an external mic?
mrroninmann 10 months ago
@mrroninmann No. You'll need a D5100 or higher for that. This is a beginner DSLR.

Great video but question: Did the camera come with a USB connector? I mean how am I supposed to upload the photos to the computer and to facebook etc, if it doesnt come with the USB charger..or could you just put the USB card into the computer? sorry, not very experienced person here.
xlacostegirlx 10 months ago
@xlacostegirlx You take out the memory card and put it into the SD card reader on your computer/laptop. If you have a desktop computer without a memory card reader, you buy one. And since this is the fifth time I've answered this question, I guess I'd better add an annotation to the video. :-)
- Jason

@ThoughtsMedia Thank you very much for your reply. Helped a lot. :-)
xlacostegirlx 10 months ago
can you upload some sample macro photos with blury on backround please
MontenegroDJsOffical 10 months ago
@MontenegroDJsOffical No, that's not something I do when I review a camera. Do a Web search for "Nikon D3100 sample photos" and you'll find plenty. The blur you're referring to is all about the lens and less about the camera though...
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 10 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia But,what you're thinking,what is the best blury lens :D
P.s. Sorry for my bad English :/
MontenegroDJsOffical 10 months ago
@MontenegroDJsOffical Anything at f/2.8 or lower (f/1.8, f/1.4, etc.) will give you beautiful bokeh.
- Jason

@ThoughtsMedia thanks.

Do you recommend I get the D3100 or spend the extra money and get the D5100? It's supposed to be really good
Bazgani 10 months ago
@Bazgani If you can get the D5100, go for it - it's superior to the D3100 in every way, but that's why it costs more. ;-)

How do I do priority and stuff?
aidanalter 10 months ago
Also these people will be flying by me and doing jumps so I don't think auto focus is fast enough! Can u tell me how to use manual focus and is manual focus kinda like how to use binoculars?
aidanalter 10 months ago
I have a question for u! I just bought this camera and I do motocross so I bought this camera to Take some sick pics of my friends! I've seen amazing pics online! I heard this camera will work great but what settings and iso and all should I use for outdoor motocross and I should add that I'm a beginner and im using default lens!
aidanalter 10 months ago

Thanks!!!! :)
thecoolguy771 10 months ago
@thecoolguy771 Glad you liked the video. I believe there's a focus lock beep. Why, are you not hearing that?
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 10 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia Nope. :(
thecoolguy771 10 months ago

IJvevo 10 months ago
@IJvevo The 10 minute limit is per video, not total on the camera. There's no way to get around that; the reason why has to do with the sensor design (heat), buffer size, marketing decisions, etc. You can't change it. Video quality is subjective; there will be things that you can do with the D3100 (such as shallow depth of field shots) that you can't do with a Sony video camera. For good quality audio, you want a different camera - one with external microphone input.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 10 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia it has mono recording some thing. and they say its not better. sterio sound is more better. will it do the work for making good movies ? and is there a software in the camera that we can combine the 10 mins scene togehter ?
IJvevo 10 months ago
@IJvevo Forget mono versus stereo; it's about the quality of the audio capture. The on-board microphone is very basic; fine for simply clips of friends, but serious quality? No, not at all. As for the clips, you'd edit them in video editing software on a computer - you don't make a movie on the camera. I'd encourage you to do some more reading and research on the topic.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 10 months ago
@ThoughtsMedia Oh Dear. i have done researchs about it and im mad of it. i dont know which to buy. do you know about nikon p500 ? actually my range is till this camera. And Realy i apperciate that atleast you replyed thanks alot man. And Realy helpfull videos there ^
IJvevo 10 months ago
@IJvevo Let me be blunt: you're not going to get high-quality audio from ANY camera that only uses a built-in microphone. If the D3100 is the upper limit of what you can afford, yet you need great-quality audio and video, then keep saving your money. Do a Web search for the D5100 and you might like what you find. That's all the help I can offer, so no more questions please. :-)

@dedarkle You take the memory card out of the camera and you put it in a memory card reader on your computer. If your computer lacks an SD card reader, you buy one.
