The government is extremely strict with visas and guest workers, if you lose your job, piss of the wrong Emeratti (arguably only 20% of the residents there are actually citizens) , etc. you DO NOT want to get picked up by the authorities, you just GTFO and leave everything behind.

Those cars ARE really abandoned. I've read an article about that.

It happened this way: experts from the West got jobs in there, earning lots of money, so they could afford those cars - they payed installments. Once they lost their jobs, they couldn't afford to pay installments any more - and the banks there don't accept vehicles as debt's coverage, so you still have to pay. And in Dubai, not paying installments is a CRIME, you go to jail for that. So it's better to just flee the country...
