man i love this song from waylon usually sang country these were a few of his rock songs after listening to this i was thinking what a party him and buddy must ve having in heaven man i wish i could been back in those days!also got some cool pics of them back then!
I have this number, on "the Buddy holly showcase"collection, along with an instermental of it, and what sure sounds like a cover done by Holly himself! It sounds great.
Nice song, but I don't think anybody has come up with a great version. The original by the Nighthawks starts off well, and the lead sings with expression, (maybe a little too much of a Holly hiccup,) but the backup singers are shaky.
Waylon sings too low on his version, but King Curtis has a nice sax break. The Roses are on backup. I think Terry Stafford recorded this, too.
An awful song and an awful singer with an awful producer... LOL No doubt Buddy would have cleaned this up if he had lived, if only to cover his tracks. LOL
@1959buddyh ..I think you may be refering to the Nighthawkes version.....but that wasn't Waylon nor Buddy no matter what the album covers might claim. Look up Purple Chick Buddy Holly complete...all the info can be found there with a bit of digging.
@1691bhm No, I know the Nighthawk's version.... Their are two other studio tracks of this song... one that is a band track without Waylon's voice... and one that is a different vocal take than this one, which is the version I first heard. It's also on Youtube, check it out.
@1959buddyh ...LOL...Yeah er No, there are SIX studio tracks of this song, 3 with vocals and 3 without.... 'twas ME that posted them from my "imanuglyfrog" channel...come see, best regards, Mark.
@DrizztDoom That's correct-& from what I've read & understand, Buddy was not on this recording, having left after "Jole Blon" was recorded & left Waylon to the mercy of Norman Petty, who he said he pretty much didn't care for. He did record this song from his own statement, in a lower, more uncomfortable vocal range for him at the time.
@Donkey9900 ....Discs Seven and Eight compile all circulating sessions featuring Buddy as a side musician and/or producer, plus songs Buddy wrote that he never recorded, with others finishing the compositions. Others exist, and may yet escape, "I Sent You Roses" by Jerry Engler is due to be released soon."When Sin Stops" by The Nighthawks (Hamilton 50006), on the Vigotone set does not feature Buddy.
Similarly, "Oh Boy!" on the Vigotone Set is by Billy And The Glens (Jaro 77006), not Sonny West.
@Donkey9900 ...continued, this quote is taken from the "Purple Chick" compilation of the Complete Buddy Holly works, some of which has been posted from my other channel...imanuglyfrog....this is where i got my information from...the label Vigatone also confirm this fact for Purple Chick.....SO, just goes to show, you can't always believe what you read...be it from autobiographies or record labels / sleeves.....1691bhm (aka imanuglyfrog)

The backing vocals were by The Roses but were overdubbed at a later date.

Still, Bob Venable wrote a catchy tune.

@ZeskoWhirligan I agree with you on this particular vocal track. There is a better vocal track that Waylon did than this out there, this is HORRIBLE!

@ZeskoWhirligan This track has better vocals... but would have been better with Buddy Holly singing lead.

I am reading from "Waylon: An Autobiography" right now and Waylon says that the background was the harmonies of the Roses.
