  • it wasnt just a 'taxiby' it was a 'fast taxi run', i have been to bruntingthorpe and seen them preform these on a whole host of different aircraft and it is very impresive to watch.

a fast taxi run is basically the start of a take off so people can see and hear what these aircraft used to be like, (the throttles are supposed to be firewalled). there are lots of videos on here of fast taxi runs and it is the only time you will see a lot of these aircraft move under their own power.

  • Personally, I don't care if it's a hoax. This bird deserves to fly, and if she's not airworthy now, make her so.

I have a 4 way tie for my favorite aircraft. CH-53E (personal bias, I am a Warhorse forever), SR-71, F-14, and the Victor. 3 of these may never fly again, and I just hope I haven't cursed the Super Stallion with my loyalty.

  • should have flown a go around on the basis of safety lol.......I reckon they did it for the blast, and as we know the old fella was a veteran and probably fancied a final hoot :D

  • What a superb shape, so diferent. I love it.

  • The old man wanted one last time at the controls, could you resist.I would have done it.

  • ... I told him to do it...

  • Yeah big cock up. A little bit of flap selected ... windy/gusting conditions..... nosewheel lifts (not unusual on a fast taxi & probably intentional).... luck to escape without damaging a priceless beauty. Still good to see the old girl where she belongs - in the air.

  • Im no pilot but it looked a pretty sloppy bit of flying!

This was an awesome aircraft, in its day....

  • Yep its the real deal

  • I have spoken to the chap who was sitting in the right hand seat and have absolutely no doubt he froze and this was an unintentional flight.

  • This may sound familiar, but...

A mate says his mate was on the flight deck and this was indeed an accident - or at least, very bloody nearly.

That doesn't look like a planned take-off to me, more like a very large whisky in the making.

  • @themanfromwem Yes, '75 to 78 and that's what my username reflects. Were you a Brat?

  • ...maybe it was just a flap.....

  • Lol americans, argh its coming to bomb us argh! Victor & Vulcan FTW

  • The a/c didn't over-run the runway and it also landed there ok when it was delivered years ago which proves the runway is plenty long enough. It might have been a different story with a full fuel load of 128k lbs. Oh and by the way, it's an aeroplane, not a bloody airplane!!

  • @125brat wELL SAID...btw WERE YOU AT raf hALTON??

  • What a load of conspiracy crap from over the pond and, get your facts right and you might have a bit more credibility. The aircraft is a Victor K Mk 2 which is a 3-point tanker, not a bomber!! Bob Prothero is probably one of the most experienced Pilots on type, although he obviously hasn't flown one for a few years. The plan was for a rejected take-off, so flaps at T/O, trim neutral, c of g in limits etc. It's just a shame the P2 froze and didn't retard the throttles on command.

  • Bob Prothero did a magnificent job getting the Victor back under control after it inadvertently lifted off. I've heard the interview w/ Prothero, and his account is good enough for me. If you won't believe a multi-thousand-hour pilot talking about an airplane which was central to his flying career...then you're beyond logic. How sad for you.

  • he needs a wind correction.

  • Unfortunate incident, well handled by the Captain and a good dose of luck prevented a more serious incident.

Conspiracy? You need to get out more!

  • 1. It wasn't an air show 2. the takeoff nearly shut the whole taxi run thing down permanently 3. who in their right mind would want to pull a 60 yr bomber off the ground for a stunt! 4. stop seeing hoaxes in everything 5. i was there :)

  • Great Video.

Would it not be great to have the three 'Vs', Victor, Valiant and Vulcan, flying again in formation.

    Those were the day's!!

  • @san4tam "day's"??

  • Great Video.

Would it not be great to have all of the 'V Bombers', Victor, Valiant and Vulcan, flying again in foprmation.

    Those were the day's!!

  • Thanks for the video.

Would be great , if it was possible, to have all of the 'V Bombers' flying together again

  • I dont know how true is is BUT i was told (by someone who was there at the time) the same thing happened at southend airport a couple of years back during a fast taxi run with Vulcan XL426 she didnt get as high as the old victor here. It only took a gust of cross wind and those big delta wings had enough lift to get her a couple of feet off the ground, lol just wish i could have seen it.

  • its a fast taxi where full power is used to go for a "fast taxi run"-they do it with other planes aswell as the Victor.

  • AAAA. 111921Z NOV 2010 Good video this....thank you for posting.......AR.

  • They let the Vulcan fly, why not the Victor?

  • @jpatt1000 because the vulcan is a much more characteristic aircraft.

  • @jacktheman27 Wasn't the Victor actually the better plane though? From what I've read, it could carry more payload and a wider range of stores. (Not sure, but I think I read it had a greater range as well.) Anyway, these are the times when the rules start to irk me. We have a similar situation here in the States. The Collings foundation is trying to get hold of a number of remaining F-105s in Texas. One to fly, the others for spares, but the USAF is blocking it.

  • @jpatt1000 They already own an A-4 Skyhawk and an F-4 Phantom, (the sale of which the USAF tried to block). Now the USAF loves to have the F-4 for Heritage Flights, why not add to that? There have been Medal of Honor recipiants in the AF Chief of Staff's office pleading on behalf of Collings. Ultimately it will take an act of Congress to allow them to have the Thud. (That's how they got the Phantom). I say let 'em have it so others can enjoy!

  • @jpatt1000

That sucks. Someone should cancel their stupid power.

  • @jpatt1000

"Wasn't the Victor actually the better plane though? From what I've read, it could carry more payload and a wider range of stores. (Not sure, but I think I read it had a greater range as well.) "

The Victor had superior load carrying capacity and an amazing range. But - the government chose a version stressed for high altitude for production. After the U2 was shot down the RAF needed to consider low level tactics. The Vulcan was inherently more rigid & thus superior at low altitude.

  • go to russia to get more expirience...........

  • This is no hoax. She went to full power to accelerate for a fast run, then the throttles should have been retarded when she was moving fast enough. Unfortunately "co-pilot" froze and didn't pull 'em back.

The old boy in the captain's seat was a retired Victor pilot and knew exactly what to do, and got her back on the ground, then straightened her up on the runway and stopped her in the over-run. Well done, Sir.

An emphatic finger to the CAA who said she'd never fly again!

  • @bebajoro77 CAA = Campaign Against Aviation

  • Should have typed Wellesbourne, stupid iPhone changed it.

  • It wasn't going "to taxi down the runway for photos" it does regular fast runs like that, just as Vulcan XM655 at Welkesbourne does. Fast runs but not to take off point. The EE Lightnings at Bruntingthorpe do the same thing.

  • It's WRONG that we ground beautiful icons like this which represent the 'Great' in the Great Britian..!! Personally, my heart LEPT for joy at seeing this beauty take to the air - a big UP YOURS to the Criminals Against Aviation (CAA) and their namby pamby frikin rules..!! Stuff em - were i at the controls of this bomber i know which two targets i'd have lined up in my sights, offices in London and Gatwick..!! European Health & Safety & political frikin correctness - Huh..!

  • Did you know all conspiracy theorists are going to be hunted down and covertly killed. At least, that's my conspiracy theory.

  • yes there is alot of power being produced by the aircraft however thats the norm for a FAST taxi run , i dont belive for a second that the co-pilot didnt pull back the power but what a sight.

  • They made it off the ground, so they know she'll still fly...I say put her back in the air!! It's been preserved this long, it's kind of a shame to keep on the ground. I would so kill to take that jet for a couple of trips around the pattern...

  • The Old Bird is Parked up about 400 metres from me. it still get lot's of T.L.C. and looks none the worse for rough handling. July 24th 2010.

  • i think the plane acctually was gonna taxi down the runway but u need a heck lot of thrust to get it to start moving and than decrease on thrust as it start to roll. dont think they ment to fly it no.

  • I have never heard such a load of balls

  • " If the pilot would have chosen to take off after this, he would have had to go to another aiport, as the Bruntingthorpe runway is not long enough to (in theory) land a Victor. "

nonsence the vulcan flys from too and from there all the time so a simaler aircraft lik that would be able to land!!!!!

  • the pilot is trying to tell us something.. if we can bring vulcan 558 back to the skies. how about its v force sibling ?? one can dream :)

  • The pilot had experience on this type. The co-pilot may not have even been a pilot, and were just there to control the throttle. It was just the lack of experience which caused this. If the pilot would have chosen to take off after this, he would have had to go to another aiport, as the Bruntingthorpe runway is not long enough to (in theory) land a Victor.

  • @xbadbenx Rubbish, full 2 miles like most RAF bases

  • @xbadbenx How did they get it there then?

  • No hoax. It even ended up on the grass and nearly crashed because the pilot had to grab the throttles off the co-pilot and shut the power while trying to control it and bring it back down in a strong cross wind. As if they'd risk wrecking the aircraft and killing the pilots for a photo stunt.. Also there was hardly enough runway to take off and land without going round.

  • I was at this event, & have been at lots of previous ones, and the engines are normally put up to full throttle for sound & and a fast taxi run down the runway. Usually they throttle back as soon as she moves forward & pop the shute for more photo ops, but this time she just kept going!! Very SCARY to have watched!!

  • Got airborne with no flaps... which is not a proper setting for an intended take off in a short runway. Definitely a Hero after this incident. No Hoax guys. And two dirty-pants pilots.

  • This was not meant to happen at all. It wasn't even meant to reach flight speed. It's obvious thatt there was something wrong ... just watch the video.

  • the guy behind the throttles went a bit too far, luckilly the guy beside him a retired victor pilot along for the ride took control and put it back down, these events are called fast taxi runs so dont expect them to go by at walking speed.

  • Great ^^.I know that it needs a lot of money to keep old planes in flight conditions but...to me this thing has been designed to fly not to "taxi down" runways so just let it flies.

  • you had better put your duffs away

  • the uk are gearing up to bomb the good old u s of a

  • @buddyjesus1000 Yep the Egg was gonna be dropped for the two eggs on Japan. A bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush.

  • One things for sure....it would have made a great vid if a low level circuit had been called for!

  • Did he land on the grass? Has a Victor ever been landed on grass before?! Looks like they were quite lucky to get it down without breaking it or themselves.

  • This is jhust unhelpful and ill informed, sensationalist reporting. It was not a taxi for a photo opportunity. It was intended to be an aborted take off, but the co-pilot failed to retard the throttles when told to. This aircraft COULD fly and all the systems are operational but it has not done so properly since 1993 and would need a major overhaul to be able to safely and legally do so.

  • Sure, like pilots would put their lives on the line for a hoax.

  • A hoax, Nothing really to hoax here. The balloon boy was hoax. Either they wanted to takeoff, or the FO just had a brain lapse. The landing was very dangerous though. Fines or charges, they should have just taken off and performed a normal approach. That pilot has lots of skill though. I'm tired of hearing that the aircraft is not airworthy, If It can do high speed taxi runs, I'm sure all of its systems perform properly. If it was not safe, they would not perform High speed taxi runs.

  • That's a chinese take off!

    (Wun wing lo)

  • @gilliguts and just as dull as convicts dont forget where you came from CONVICT LOL

  • Sorry mate no convicts were sent to New Zealand so you kinda missed badly on that one.... Anyway... I didnt say we where immune from mistakes. Take WW1 at Golipili for eg.... We listened to British inteligence and planed our ANZAC assult on it...... BIG MISTAKE.... not so great britain eh!!!

  • For a start, the Victor was not one of the UK's earliest strategic bombers - there were plenty more before that.

Secondly, I would imagine that the aircraft was trimmed for takeoff so the pilot could get the nose up on the high speed taxi.

Thirdly, unlike our American counterparts, no RAF pilot, ex or not, would attempt such a dangerous and irresponsible manouvre and risk his life and the future of the last chance of getting this plane airborne properly again.

  • Seriously - what an utterly stupid video: here to let people contemplate whether it was intended or not.

No RAF or ex RAF pilots would do such a dangerous thing. Anyone with the smallest bit of common sense would know it's a dangerous thing to do. You can see it was all over the place when in the air.

No idiot would jeopardise themselves or one of the two only 'live' Victors, by doing this intentionally.

  • Frankly, if it was a planned take off, he wouldn't have made such a pigs ear of it!

The aircraft became airborn because of the strong crosswind combined with the fact that it was very light - very little fuel and no payload.

The pilot has given a full and credible explanation of what happened. He had to remove his hand from the control column to close the throttles when the 'engineer' froze and didn't close the throttles at 90knots. When he removed his hand, the aircraft pitched up...

  • Very cool aircraft, but I don't see why they had the flaps down and rotated for a taxi run

  • They usually rotate for a taxi run, just to get the nose wheel up a bit.

  • oh gotcha

  • I agree, if you want power - fine, you need some noise to impress. But leave the flaps up and wings clean and so long as you control speed that's all you'll get... a silly mistake I think and NOT done on purpose

  • I knew it'd be the fucking yanks that would get sceptic about it. Buisness as usual not getting the facts right.

  • well look at it this way she looks so so good in the air and should be flying with the vulcun victor to the skys was the battle cry!!!!!!!!!

  • Victor is one ugly bird

  • how good of the clip poster to introduce a conspiracy that does'nt exist

  • the flaps are down!

  • FAST taxi at Cold War Jets Day, cruise power was set not full beans, added to a light fuel load and a very windy day meant that it would take off effortlessly and below normal take off speed. A genuine accident, where throttles were meant to be shut by the co-pilot when 90 kts came up, he didnt, pilot had to. gust of wind and the pilot needs clean underwear

  • As far as I know, the only people on YouTube who have claimed a hoax are the ones who created this sniffy video.

And the flaps are at take-off because at taxi speeds they generate more drag than lift on the Victor. That's how they've ALWAYS done it for fast taxis.

  • Afterthought - hey, it looks like this Victor's airworthy! Anybody got a bit of spare cash to throw around?? :-)

  • Consider these things:

    1. The Victor isn't certified airworthy. Look what it took to get the Vulcan to that state.

    2. A responsible pilot of great experience would never plan to take such an a/c into the air, especially with a crowd around.

So it simply couldn't have been pre-planned. I think once he realised the situation, he lifted it off as an emergency decision to salvage a disaster. Then he realised he maybe had enough runway+overrun left, so put it back down. Forgot the tail chute.

  • I was there.....and I don`t know what you`re on about and clearly you don`t either.

If you want to read bullshit, there is a total garbage article in the Daily Mail.

  • Eh? Simon, are you saying it was a pre-planned "flight", or it wasn't? If you were there, what extra info do you have that we can't see on the video?

Facts instead of criticism would be nice ... (and sorry, we don't get the Daily Mail in Australia).

  • No, I`m saying it was NOT pre-planned surely. Honest, I was there and it was just an accident - there was a lot of runway left. The article in the newspaper here suggested that people were running for their lives which is clearly not the case.....but that`s the British media for you.

  • Thanks Simon, we agree then. I was a bit puzzled as to why he actually rotated and lifted off, but I guess the first priority was to save the plane and lives -- then he saw he had enough room and time to chop the throttles and get back down.

  • I want to post your comment again m8 just for it to sink in a lil more..good grief. I don't even know why this video was made with a "you be the judge" attitude...SNAFUs happen all the time in routine life and the aviation world is no exception.

  • Reply to SimonDolan: I read the article in the Daily Mail as well and you are correct, total rubbish about it heading for the crowd and a housing estate.

it was just a genuine mistake of the co-pilot failing to respond to the throttle back command as he did not suddenly slam the throttle open as it was already like that.

  • Well I don't think it was deliberate. They MIGHT have been unable to get authorization for a hop, and decided to make it "accidental", but surely they would have picked a day without such a strong crosswind! Also the tail chute wasn't deployed after landing -- looks to me as if the pilot was very preoccupied. Flaps at TO - yes, but if they were planning a demo rejected TO, they'd do that anyway. ... but I could be wrong!

  • If you look on the wings you could see that the flaps are set. Why would anyone do that if they dont intend to take off or do a Spruce Goose showboat.

  • ... Why would it be a hoax?

    Just why?

  • As someone who was there that day (and filmed it) it was a scheduled fast taxi run, there was no preconceived "hop", it was very very windy, even for Bruntingthorpes standars, it was also a cross wind. Bob is a very experienced pilot, probably the most experienced behind the ex Lightning pilots that taxi 904 and 728.

There is no way he would risk the safety of anyone there for a quick jolly.

Some people need to get their facts right. Perhaps they should come a Cold War Jets day.

  • Ok, here's what it seems to be...there are NO unintentional wheels-up at an airshow...but, if the pilot screwed the pooch...well, he should retire!

  • A very stunning design for a plane, and a damn good thing it didn't get wrecked.

  • lol hes lucky he didnt go 88 mph or else it probably would have went back

  • alot of diffrent fate converged on that one. the old bird diddn't know it still had iti n her,got that one good accident out of the way, and yes, showed off at the show. plus more

  • Just a little fun at an airshow... shame about all you trolls posting on here though, it's disgracful really.

  • failed lift off lol.

  • like a penis

  • Great Video!

  • What a ridiculous explanation for what happened. If the inexperienced copilot fire-walled the engines, why didn't the pilot just take it down to an appropriate setting?

  • What do they mean by "hoax"? I don't see what other explanation there is other than the official story. Seems odd any way it goes.

  • they mean is it real or B.S.(fake)

  • boring. next time drop some bombs on london lamo.

  • awesome : )

  • This happened ages ago why is it being brought up now?? and why r the papers talkin so much crap about it???

    Oh well!!

  • Not an expert on rejected takeoffs or anything but thats what this amounted to....I just looks like it would have been safer to just continue the takeoff, circle around and land rather than landing after (I am guessing) passing V1 and lifting off the runway.

  • im guessing it wasnt fueld for flight, thats why the pilot put it back on the ground asap. dunno why it did lift off though

  • couldn't agree more, I was positive this was going to end in the vintage a/c ramming into the trees

  • Reply to masterchiefgtx:

I can understand you saying going-around may of been safer, but the reason it didn't is that this aircraft isn't airworthy and god knows what may have happened to it under the stresses of flight. (Could of landed without a hitch or gone catostrophicly wrong and landed on someones house. who knows)

  • I agree. If the aircraft can do high speed taxis, it must have all of its flight systems working properly. It would be dangerous otherwise. Those gear absorbed so much energy, I'm surprised the wing spar did not snap. Still a great job by the pilot though.

  • im confussed?

All is evident the plane has slick and cool design!

  • watch this video

WAKE UP ! YOUTUBE IS GOING CORPORATE ON US. Taking the YOU out of YouTube

  • haha well if anyhting it would have been pretty cool to watch!

  • looks sick!

  • For all of you airplane NOOBs out there. High spped Taxi sometimes equals unplanned take off. Often the result is fatal

I994(?) Lockheed, Georgia, I was in the area for another airplane. A C-130 under test got airborne and went into the ground with a crew of engineers and technicians on board. Fatal to them all.

Flying is not like driving a car down the highway. Pilots were flight test pilots, not just a Goober.

Spare us your ignorance and keep your idiot opinion in your head.

  • That plane looks state of the Art.

  • Don't know if it was real or a put-on, but that sure is a neat looking plane.

  • This was a great design of plane and were made into tankers in the 70's. Of the V force, this plane as the only one to go past Mach 1. Read Vulcan 607, the book about the blackbuck raid on the Falkland Islands. It explains all.

  • It tells a lot but not all. Excellent book - I recommend it to anyone interested in these great aircraft - written on fact unlike Youtube and the papers.

  • it's like a Messerschmitts Comet

  • They botched the take-off or got cold feet.Either way, it's obvious that they planed to exceed Vr speed and lift off.

  • Now, I say they should've done a fly by...

  • hey SHORTbitch or bloke maybe US yanks question things more, like maybe i should brush my teeth. or shut the F up before there isn't any thing left to brush.

  • Maybe the Brits at the controls had one too many pints in the pub.....

  • Comment removed

  • Bloke Brush your teeth

P.S. your country takes orders from us LoL

  • Comment removed

  • Oh the irony! Since us stupid yanks invented/perfected powered flight and moon landings. another jealous brit,YAWN

  • Ye did not invent powered flight, despite what your history books say and ye most certainly did not perfect it.

As for the moon landings...good job, shame ye did it on german tech.

The brain drain from europe after the war was enormous, but were back now bitch so take a back seat and let mammy and daddy take over,

  • Yeah, but there's no denying that you're repulsively unpolite.

  • You spelled "loud" wrong. Idiot.

  • "Must be American?"

Can't even spell and you talk about others?

God bless us Americans that always get targeted by people that think they are elite and better than any other country...

I don't think that I am better than my British cousins, we are just different thats all, and yes we do spell things slightly different, it comes from being here since the 1600's and having our own dialect brother.

Why don't you try to stop being steriotypical? We are all related in one way or another.

  • He must think Aussies are dumb also, since they have their own way of saying things and their own dialect too.

  • no they think that their story might be a hoax.

  • Thats their story and their stuck with it. I'd like to see an old WWI Handley Page fly.

  • Very cool looking jet sorta Harrieresque.

  • A hoax? What, like it didn't actually happen?! Or this is CGI?! Or they always meant to do it? The ex-RAF Victor pilot said it was a mistake, the other guy just froze, and he was worried that if he tried a go-around the aircraft wouldn't make it. Lucky he went into auto mode and remembered what to do after all these years.

  • Shut up and let us listen to it dolt!

  • ugly as hell

  • nope, that is a beautiful bomber

  • yea inside job

  • youll get over it

  • let say..who cares about the UK

  • i hate it how most of the youtube videos regarding decision. say "you be the judge" ....lol i hate it...i dnt know shit going on bout this so why the fuck would i be the judge?? stupid ass

  • Ladies and gentlemen this is your pilot speaking

I think i just shit myself and were going in for an emergency landing ......

  • Really interesting, good stuff

  • Watching for Vr ?

  • You can't keep an old bird down.

  • nicely said

  • When I was 18 I was a loadmaster on the C-141's out of Norton. I almost cried when I found out they decommissioned them and saw the boneyard photos online.

  • I flew with the 15th MAS, what's your story pal?

  • Me? USCG ,my dad was 449thbg 15th AF ww2

and come on , that was funny!! lighten up Francis .

  • haah Lighten up francis!

    great movie
