  • hi my name is andrew. i was woundering if you could get the grinder setup on the mini lathe also for this job? please let me know thnaks.

  • @andrewstunna08 Andrew, the two machines (grinder and lathe) are unrelated, although they do share a few components from the Sherline tool line.

  • Is that some special version of EMC2 or just a customized GUI?

  • @viestartss It is the standard EMC2, but Sherline has customized the back end slightly in our version. The GUI is unchanged.

  • @craiglibuse Which GUI is that? Touchy? The thing is that I do not recognize it. At the first moment I did not recognize that it is EMC2 at all, I got it only, when I saw the "open file" dialogue window.

Anyway, thank You for sharing both vids :)

  • @viestartss No, the touchy GUI was only recently developed for the integration of a touch screen pc, or monitor. What you are seeing is the Sherline specific "mini gui" this was developed by Ray Henry in the original EMC. The "mini gui" has been Sherlines interface for EMC since RedHat.

  • @craiglibuse Ok, got it, thanks for explaining!

  • Did he used to do computer programming for a living?

  • @douro20 No, Joe Martin started as a high school educated construction worker and then started his own company making connectors for the RC industry in the 1960's. After selling that company, he then started importing Sherline tools from Australia in the 1970's and eventually bought the company in 1974. At first he didn't have the money for new shop tools so he learned to fix up old ones. He learned computers and programming on his own too. Sherline now owns many new CNC machines.

  • @douro20 No, he is a self-taught machinist/tool maker. He is a very logic-oriented person, so writing programs is something that comes fairly naturally to him. He also had some help on the math algorithms from a very smart kid. Many years ago he wrote the program for the first computerize timekeeping system for shop management called BTS (Business Timekeeping Systems). We still use it in our own shop at Sherline.

  • AMAZING JOB!!! :D

  • I can see a Sherline head stock, DC motor, Mill table, tail stock. Motor mount.

and ...what else? The stepper motors of course, is there another lathe bed in there or is that an indexing attachment?

what about the vertical set up on the mill table? Do you have a list of the Sherline components used?

  • @gwheyduke The cam grinder is now a product in the Sherline line. Information on the components used and its capabilities can be found at Sherline's web site by searching for part number 8650.

  • Watching this video makes me hungry forice cream... Great video and cool machine, thanks for posting it.
