In this song, a young man asks a bird to carry a message of love to his beloved.
There's a wonderful companion song to this, "Y Ferch o Blwy' Penderyn," in which the bird comes back and says, "She's going to marry some other guy!" :-D
16 dislikes? What the fuck....absolutely beautiful welsh song about the pure dove...a welsh classic sung beautifully......only cold hearted ppl can dislike :(
It is wonderful to hear this song from someone who understands the words. The performance suggests that Mary can feel the undertone of self-mockery in these lyrics.
It is a pity she doesn't sing the second verse (which is probably risqué - but so subtly done that one cannot be sure), but this is so neglected a song that even half of it is precious.
@thallassocracy Hello and thanks for your comments. This short clip was taken from a TV show about mary's life, mary has recorded this song, done about 2/3 years ago which was only released in the USA,
The CD is called Y’deryn pur (Gentle Bird) on the album Blodeugerdd: Song of the Flowers - An Anthology of Welsh Music and Song released by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (Amazon stock it.)
"Pan y'i gwelais syth mi sefais"? I suppose that could be risqué to someone of lewd mind, but as you say, only subtly so. BTW is "dyn byw" a euphemism for "Duw"?
Now I have two Toshiba-EMI issues of Earth Song / Ocean Song. One is an ordinary release and the other is in-paper-sleeve special. Mary at 0:40 (previously you selected it as your icon) is from the latter special?. I have this from EU (Italy-made) a few month before I bought two of Toshiba-EMI issues. I ve visited a lot of discstoresS around here in Saitama and downtown Tokyo. Even if it needs my foot exercise efforts, they are yet available..
Richpat: Mary Hopkin does have a CD of Welsh songs and it is brilliant. its called "Early Recordings" (y caneuon cynnar) and its brilliant, and recorded in the late 1960's
How brilliant she is. Anyone who has listened to a bird singing sweetly in the early morning would know that she has captured this song. "I could listen for an hour my pretty bird" and "enraptured, I am listening" are a couple of english phrases from the song, and they are true to me when I hear Mary sing as well as y Deryn Pur.
Whatever Mary Hopkin sings, she sings with a voice of an angel. To hear her singing this wonderful traditional song in her own language, Welsh, is a real treat and this is without doubt the best and most beautifully serene version I have heard. What a pity the whole song is not on. Thankyou for posing this treasure.
Funny I also thought of Mary when I heard Moonlight Shadow and we talked about it at work during the coffeebreak this REALLY must mean something and I think too that Jefferson should have been the A-side
Thanks for your reply, I agree with you that 'Jefferson' should be released as side A (7" single) instead of side B at that time. I have listened to this wonderful song hundred times since I bought the CD 'Those Were The Days' two years ago. I already have the LP 30 years ago, but there is no such bonus track included.
I like to share with you something that is very interesting in a Mary Hopkin song called 'Jefferson', at about 1min 27second (before the banjo solo) you can hear Mary shouting 'Ha Ha!' behind the microphone. that is so lovely and funny, I think Mary is so happy and enjoying during the recording of 'Jefferson' in the studio. I love this song very very much, the acoustic guitars are excellent, and of course Mary's vocal is perfect.
I remember back in 1971 when she sang "Jefferson" on the "Morcambe and Wise" TV show and being really disappointed that she did'nt do the "hii Haaa" bit in the middle!! But she was still excellent all the same LOL
That was another B side that should have been an A side...
sorry the english version is the wrong way round - I havent posted a comment before! the gentle dove bit comes first, then the walked with step so sprightly
Don't know how accurate it is - I can't speak Welsh either .... just a wannabe.
THanks so much I should have thought of putting the lyrics/translation on the "more info" part on the right... It is as accurate as I could find. I have it on the lyrics page on my webasite maryhopkindotnet.
The Gentle Dove O gentle dove with wings so blue Fly quickly to my lady And take to her a message true While in her garden shady Go to her and say I love her And am trying to discover How to meet her, fondly greet her But if my love should fail to please her May God forgive her beautiful face I know that I must leave her. With heart so gay one happy day
Do you remember a female singer called Maggie Reilly about twenty five years ago? she is the lead vocalist in 2 or 3 Mike Oldfield albums in mid-80, including the hit singles 'Moonlight Shadow' 'To France' and 'Foreign Affair'. the voice of Maggie Reilly is quite similar to Mary Hopkin, when I listened to these Mike oldfield songs at that time, I thought she was Mary Hopkin.
Have you ever listened to a David Bowie song called 'Sound and Vision' from the album 'Low' produced by Tony Visconti in 1977? Mary Hopkin did an excellent harmony vocal (less than ten seconds) in this song.
Have you ever heard a song called 'Intermezzo' from album 'Spirit' recorded in 1989?
Mary Hopkin did an excellent harmony vocal (without any lyric) in this song. This song is the best (except 'Jerusalem') from the album. This ablum is no longer available in store, I bought this in a used CD shop many years ago.
"Intermezzo" from "Cavalleria Rusticana" by Pietro Mascagni is indeed a great track from "Spirit" a very hard to come by CD or LP. I love every thing on it, but for me there are two outstanding tracks they are "Requiem (Introit)" "Requiem (Kyrie)"
I have an idea, I like to suggest Mary Hopkin to cover a Neil Young song , that is 'After the Goldrush' from the album of the same name recorded in 1970. I think this song is so suitable for her to cover, with the sweet and lovely voice of Mary, this would be a wonderful cover version. Do you agree with me?
Oh it would be beautiful... I remember a version back in the 70's by a group called "prelude" (its on youtube) really lovely interpretation no music just voices..
The picture cover of the album 'EarthSong Ocean Song' is quite similar to a Neil Young album called 'Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere'(recorded in 1969).

Hi
I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear in that comment. what I meant was " I wish she do a new cd of Welsh songs"
Mary is back in the studio recording new material at the moment and I would love to hear her do some Welsh material...
"Early Recordings" is wonderful though.
Have you had a chance to hear her last 3 cd's from her own lable MHM ?

Mary singing "Jefferson" so happily!
I love Mary's "Hi-Ho", too.
I wonder hearing this, where is 'Jefferspm"?
Maybe a town in US where a long-distance train (what city it departs?) will make a stop but USA has a lot of town named Jefferson.....

I walked with step so sprightly
The loveliest girl I'd ever seen
Came tripping there so lightly
On her beauty so amazing
I could only stand there gazing
Of the fairest, she the rarest
Her smile make all around her shining
She was an angel to my eyes
And for her love I'm pining

"Y Deryn Pur"?
It's very sorry and unfortunate that i cannot understand Welsh!
Welsh and English are completely different languages!
It is certain how beautiful language Welsh is.
The town Mary and Pat spent and grown in is a very beutiful and nice place!
I like this song too.
Happiness runs, Love is the sweetest thing, Lulubye of leaves, St. Etienne in French,.....
These songs with Mary's sweet voice always be played upon our turn table in my young "the days".....
