Does the FAA allow autogyro take offs and landings out of private backyards and big fields, or do have to fly in and out of airports and walk to your destination, or call a taxi from there?
@SteveLLW All applicable FAA laws must be followed. If you live out in a rural area and have a field big enough you should be able to take off and land from there as long as there isn't any local laws preventing it. These small single place gyros are mainly used for recreational flying. A few pilots make x-country trips in them but the majority of pilots just go out and tear up the sky for an hour or so.
@mistertween Perhaps the best way to look at "needing a license" is that it is a CHEAP insurance policy on your future.
Not that having a license is a guarantee, it just betters your odds that you will one day die of old age n not of "Pilot Stupidity" or PKIA (Pilot Know It ALLness)........
I don't care what anyone says. I'm an adrenaline junkie ant that looks like a rush! You only live once, and some people never really live. Follow your passion, live your dream and do what you like. If you're too scared, stay home, on your couch and watch TV...and I guarantee that you'll still die someday.

These are the type of knuckle heads that end up dieing because of stupidity in time they get confident then think they can take on anything in an experimental airframe that require no licence to fly. An average person off the street could learn how to fly one of these in a day easily. This video is a great example of the idiots you see flying gyros in todays world
Ignorant people like you shouldn't comment on things you know nothing about. The pilot in this video is a professional pilot who performs in airshows. The aircraft are built using aircraft materials and a pilot's license is required to fly them. Flying lessons are needed as they are with any other type of aircraft. Please go back to playing your video games and leave the flying to someone else.
You mean you can get a liscence that quick? I really love flying, but at the moment, I am kinda into electromagnetic propulsion. But it is good to know how long it would take to get a flight liscence in order to fly anything in the air
tchick and eraser0815, you're both right. That was a bombshell, tchick, but I do understand. Don't mean to hurt your felling, mbzfolite. You're probably like me. I know nothing about gyrocopters, but I love them with passion, and I have nothin but high respect for those who can fly in them. I might be kinda, on the scared side to fly in one. So, do you need a flight liscence to fly anything in the air, tchick and eraser0815?
On aerobatics or "flipping" in the lexicon of one commentator a heli or gyro; it depends on the positive and negative loading that the rotor mechanism is designed for, some rotary craft are designed with this in mind.
At 0:54 was that just an odd camera angle or was the gyro flying upside down for a second there? I thought that was impossible in a rotary-wing craft.
The take off at 1:05 has to be with the aid of a pre rotator(which are not that expensive an option, and can use many drive options). These are truly outstanding machines and although i have flown in one i have never owned one, my flying has mostly been expermental/ultralight catogory ac. thanks for posting one of the best flying vids ever.
Suicidal . . .for an inexperienced pilot certainly. You've got to admire people like this with the guts and skill to push the envelope with their machines. I've seen videos of gyro pilots doing loops before--can't remember who, but I know it's been done.
ive been waiting for so long for somthing like this been following these and small heli's for few years, just cant wait till i have enough clink to own one great video nice 180's and backflip
If you could fly this thing upside down it would be a very effective lawn mower...
Thanks for sharing!

I hope to get in on the fun in a couple of years.

What is the RPM these engines are turning?
TheGrasslander 10 months ago
@TheGrasslander The engines on the gyros in this video are Rotax 2-stroke and the RPM's get up around 6000 at full throttle.

Does the autogyro do a roll at 56 seconds into the video??? Is that what I saw???
wooden5c 2 years ago
It's a loop. Jim does loops and rolls at Air Shows.
tchick 2 years ago
beautiful flying. Im on the fence between an autogyro and a flexwing trike. This video certainly sways me in the auto gyro direction.
SludgeSlinger 2 years ago
Go get a demo flight in a gyro and you'll never consider the trike.

low level flight is a good fun, I do the same with my powered paraglider. And my nightmare is that I am hit by an autogyro...

Clearly69 3 years ago
Low level flying is better.
tchick 2 years ago
Wow, incredible machines. Do you have any info about speed and cost / km? I mean, how much liters of fuel per KM. Thanks.
brunosaboia 3 years ago
A rotax 582 will burn about 5 gallons of fuel per hour. Most single seat gyros carry enough fuel to fly for 1 - 1.5 hours.
tchick 2 years ago

blastforyou 3 years ago
Almost all gyros now use a prerotator to shorten the takeoff roll.
tchick 3 years ago
Now that is living right there! So 7,000 u say for a good used one then, have any website links or anything to find out more of purchasing one?
livefastdierrhea 3 years ago
Visit the websites listed up in the video description. The rotary forum is the best source for information.
tchick 3 years ago
Those have to be the coolest machines on earth.
teamwinstonismad 3 years ago
how far can you fly in one of those?
ninemikemike 3 years ago
Depends on the size of the fuel tank. Gyros like these usually hold enough fuel for 1.5 - 2 hours of flying.
tchick 3 years ago
Where are you from. and how much can i pick one up for. You gave me the BUG and Now im gona get one.
adam3176 3 years ago
I live in FL. The gyros in this video are in Oregon. A good used single seat gyro will cost aprox $7,000 +. Brand new they're double that.
tchick 3 years ago
you guys really using a 13b in that thing? or 12a? rotary? or no
adam3176 3 years ago
Rotax 582 on the gyro with the enclosure. The open frame gyro has either a Rotax 503 or 582.
tchick 3 years ago
Woah....did I just see a loop at 0:53? Isn't that damn near suicidal in a gyro?
TheVladinator16 3 years ago
Jim Vanek (the pilot in this video) is the only person doing loops in a gyro. He performs them at airshows all the time. It's still suicidal.
tchick 3 years ago
