@hackerw32 It's not maxed out in the video. With my q9550 @ 3.8 with a GTX460 I can BARELY max it out and even then the framerate sometimes dips as low as 26fps. It's just a beast of a game.

Try lowering the shadows, just putting them to low gives me an instant extra 10fps.

and the view distance at 50

i get 20-50fps.. very heavy game, even metro 2033 is lighter

@hackerw32 Honestly with that setup you should be expecting those kind of framerates. They're not much better with my 460 so honestly don't think that's gonna make much of a difference I'm afraid.

You won't get much performance increase without a complete system overhaul with a new CPU and GPU. Sorry

@hackerw32 Oh but you could try setting the theme in windows 7 to windows classic? That frees up about 60MB of VRAM minimum. Since I use rainmeter and a load of random stuff so turning that all off gives me a nice boost to my framerate.

Also make sure you don't have a second monitor plugged in or anything, oh and turn off all random extra programs that could be draining resources.

since that it doesn't eats all of my vram (about 750mb.. 260 has 896) i don't see the reason to gain 60 mb from setting the theme in windows classic .. maybe i will try it and tell you if this will give me a boost..

aslo i have gpu boost from my motherboard (Asus M4A89GTD PRO)

Also my 460 still uses 810MB of VRAM even with low shadows?

I usually play with 30-40 view distance simply because I prefer smoothness over seeing objects miles away.

dude, you can't play a game like that, super low fps! When it comes to open free games where all AI acts different and so on, you need a powerful CPU! To play GTA IV you need a quad CPU.

look up images of a 'pci e' slot, thats the slot that will take your graphics card. When youve seen one open your cover and look, its the same colour for all. So make sure you have a pci e slot, then make sure you have enough power, check your psu, the wattage is on a label on it, make that about 600 to 700 watts. lastly, yes you will have to remove your old card, but could use it for phsyx...but thats another story lol,

this may be an old response and i know you think that this si crazy but um...

get a cookie pan cover it in oluminuf foil

take all teh parts off of card like the fan and proccessor glue...

put the card on the tin foil put in oven at 350 for about 25 minutes then pull it out and let it cool then pur all the parts backon it. and then put in your pc and works great =D

it works becuase it melts the things together in the card. and you can serch if you dont believe me.

Your motherboard should be having pci-e x16 slots for it ;) and its not very hard to fit in a new graphics card, you should know which slot to use and just carefully push it in the slot..

The graphics are better IRL. You guys should understand that this is an on-screen recorder. The FPS is decreased and the resolution is worse. It does not show the true performance. In order to see the TRUE performance, you should watch videos that record, with a camera, game-play.

I run it with only a radeon 4670, 4gig DDR ram, AMD phenom ii x3 cpu. I can have everything on highest or high(if it doesnt go to highest) and it runs without a hitch. Anyone will have problems running with a dual core even an intel. AMD is great :D

I went for a nice 'n' cheap q9550 because it offerers the same performance as an overclocked AMD quad at 3.2GHz and is about 40 squids cheaper.

My past 2 computers have both been AMD because they used to be more powerful. Now that Intel have released the i7 and the i5 is in-bound I can't see AMD going anywhere fast, bearing in mind that the q9550 is about equal with the highest AMD quad.

The i7 is only 200 quid as well and that's so much better than any AMD it's ridiculous. 2.4GHz with the i7 is equivalent to an AMD quad at 3.6GHz

My q9550 is still doing VERY well and is happily chugging along at a reasonable 3.8GHz. Haven't found a single game I haven't been able to max out yet.

I would be lying if I said I had been keeping up with CPU's though, I have literally no idea which is better now.

nah, the gtx 260 owns the 8800GTS, this video was recrded using fraps, which will have reduced framerates alot, plus the game is then severley HDD limited at that point.

h, and just noticed, the video is made with a dual core amd athlon, meaning that whilst recording the video and running the game, it is really really struggling. The GPU will be spending around 60% of the time twiddling it's thumbs waiting for the cpu to churn out a frame to render.

I think the GTX 260 get bottlenecked by the P4 you got there, & GTA IV is enhanced for multiple cores, P4 it's power is too few for GTA IV, I think even cause it's a good card, you must run everything on lowest, or a bit higher, GTA IV is more CPU intensive then GPU, but ofcourse it also needs a strong card, alot of people trying to run it on a P4 like that, get likely a slide-show gameplay (very low FPS), so I think it's also time for a new CPU, also be sure to have more then 3Gb ram.

I ment with 'Bottleneck' that the GTX 260 can't show it's true power on your CPU, cause your CPU can't handle games like IV but the GTX 260 can, but u get low FPS cause the CPU is overloaded with work, which makes the game run that slow it ain't enjoyable anymore, if you had a Core 2 Duo over 3Ghz or better, the GTX 260 will be able to show what he really can do.

Do you have windows Vista? If you do make sure you have Service pack 1 installed. I got a similar error and didn't have SP1 installed.
