My 11-inch red oscar is almost 4 years old, and finally only just now lets me pet him. It took a few years for him to like being close to me. I usually only do it though when I'm cleaning, and then I reward him for putting up for me with lots of food afterwards ;)
My dad had a pair of oscars a while back, they were really smart fish. Redecorated the entire tank on their own by pushing the rocks and pots around and moving the gravel on the bottom to make some hills.
can i ask how, i prob sound stupid now asking this but i really want to train mine, they are only 2 and a half inches at the mo, but how cn i start to train them to let me start to pet them?
its quite easy especially for you because yours are small. its good to start socializing them at a young age, all you do is put your finger into the tank (the oscars will probably be scared at first) just be patient, eventually they will nibble your fingers (this doesn't hurt) start to move your whole hand into the tank. eventually your O's will learn your fingers are not food. you can also hand feed them. if you keep this up till they are big then they will ignore your hand when you pet them :)
that's my goal with my oscar, to let me pet him. he already eats from my fingers at 3 inches. every couple days i stick my finger in and try and get a poke... one day he'll let me ;)
wow its wierd i watched a video where a guy pet his fish but everybody started bitching and said its cruelty. I like All you guys. oh yeah by the way cool video i can pet my blackghost knife if he doesnt shock me first
omg that' so cool. i had this big ass goldfish that used to let me pet it but then it died because SOMEBODY decided to over feed it while i was away....:'(
wow, thats sweet man. I have a tank with two oscar a guami and a firebelly pacu, the pacu is the only one that lets me pet it, see my video. mysticmysticman is right it will affect his slime caot, but if the water is right you shouldnt worrie about it unless your adding new fish. peace love and fish sticks
Wow I didn't think I'd ever see that again. When i was in college my girlfriends roommate had an Oscar and she used to pet and rub on it too. I thought she was the only person in the world that did that LOL!
She is very big - about a foot long. The tank is 120 gallons. I recently had to give her to another Big Fish loving couple because I can no longer take care of her. They have other big fish and tanks, and are experienced fishkeepers.
In general any kind of fish is much more difficult to take care of than most people think. Fish are like reptiles in how clean their environment has to be and how it has to be the correct temperature. I'd say dogs are easier than fish.
fish is the easiest pet to take of. i would say dog is more complicated. u need to go to the vet, exercise, clean up its wastes, train, feed them everyday and when it died u will feel very sad is like member of ur family died.
I've kept dogs, fish, birds, cats, arthropods, reptiles, you name it.
Most fish are fragile. Their entire livelyhood depends on chemical balances. They get sick easily and die quickly. Dogs are sturdy, they get sick rarely. Dogs require more attention than fish, obviously. But what I meant is, dogs are sturdy. Fish are fragile. Everything has to be precise with fish. if you overfeed a dog it will take years for it to die. a fish will take a few weeks to die from overfeeding. (for example)
lol obviously you didn't give a rats ass about the fish then. I keep a Brackish water moray eel in AR. it's classed as expert and truth be told it only takes a few requirements. 1. half salt half fresh water easy to handel. 2. i feed him store bought frozen shrimp, live ghost shrimp and my grandpa raises mollies so as a treat i throw those in. the true thing that kills fish are uneducated people who buy out of impulse. people say they last about 3mnths, i've had mine almost over a year.
I've also had to spend more on fish tanks and appliances than I ever did on dog food (just fed the dogs what I ate, lived healthy lives 14+ years, all 3 of them). Never had to take them to the vet except to euthanize them when it was time. Keeping a dog or cat is just more natural and instinctual than a fish. you know how to do it already. Now reptiles or any cold blooded animal, that's hard.
yes oscar fish is very easy. it eats every type of live food and pallet food. u dont really need good a filter depends how long u will clean ur tank once a week or month and size of ur tank. u will need a heater if u live in cold area to keep the temperature right for it.
hole in the head is usually from owners not looking after there fish properly i heard. so like, its ur own fault and stuff. but atleast throwing him in the snow wasnt cruel at all
My oscar had "hole in the head" disease and i was forced to throw him in to snow to freeze for a quick death. Im so sad about my oscar. Recommended easy to take care pets if u want to know.
I ha d two th at would fight constantly. Water every where. One had his upper lip bit off, but survived. One night of heavy fighting I woke up and removed the damaged one and quickly dispatched him with a beer bottle to the head.
Actually if you know about fiish Dumbasses youll know THAT WITH OSCARS IF YOU WASH YOUR HANDS WITH JUST WATER AND DO IT GENTLY ITS OK. dont bitch about things you dont know. you can only do it with big oscar fish, not with the samll ones. Nice vid btw.
I also think you should use a little stress coat every once and a while to help with the fishes slime coat! some oils in humen skin can hurt the fishes natural coat
thats funny
