Man, when I heard first heard Territories on Power Windows, I thought it sounded waaaay too drenched in syhths and just way too reverb-y. But live, it just really explodes. I think Alex covering the keyboard parts via guitar make it sound way better live.
@canyousmellicansmell They might have only had the master to the VHS version, with the laserdisc master probably either forgotten about or gone entirely...
I love how the more popular song in this video is YYZ and yet it seems almost all the comments are directed at territories. Means alot for considering its from my favorite album
The late 80's and 90's Rush stuff are things that were hard for me to get used to.. but now? Now I have their whole studio discography on my MP3, and I listen to every single song! For those having the same trouble I had, I would recommend listening to Lock and Key, Mission, Tai Shan, Open Secrets, Territories, Emotion Detector and Mystic Rhythms. Those are the songs that did it for me.
@loonman555, i know. territories is a good song, but people don't listen to cuz of it's name. i forgot to skip forward to YYZ, and territories ended up being on my ipod
@ieetemos4breakfast Ya I was the same..now really the only song on Power Windows that I am not crazy about about is grand designs...but that isn't saying much. If it was on the radio, it would still take precedence over pretty much anything else(except maybe another Rush song)
@ieetemos4breakfast Power Windows was and is still one of Rush's best collective pieces of work in a period where they were expanding their sound to include more keys and synths to their sound, which made them even better. i have been listening to bands since the mid sixties, and NO band compares to Rush's musicianship and live performances, and that includes bands like Floyd, Zepellin and the Who.
@ieetemos4breakfast And a lot of people dont like Big Money,Emotion Detector,or Mystic Rhythms,I love this album but dont really like Grace under Pressure, neither do a lot of people in my town...took a while for this album to grow on me but I love it now, people should do the same as well as for Test for echo...
@michellephoto1 Leave it to some little KID douchebag that thinks he is funny and creative just by mentioning JB's name. You are an unfunny piece of shit. How dare you mention that name here!

@FoulOwl - i can see why in a way, could be the record company wanting them to sound a bit more commercial and or electronic for at that time it was popular, certainly a different sound.but nonetheless

@mr3n10 I saw the Time machine tour and they play song's at regular speed but it's true that a couple years ago they played Subdivision much slower but this year the song was played at the regular speed!
Man I love this song. Mixalydian mode is just an incredible major sound. Especially with the way Alex plays it with the synth behind him. So great. Man, I wish they had played Middletown Dreams on the recording of this DVD. Man would I love them to play that on the Time Machine and/or the tour supporting their new album when it is released.
Has there ever been a better sounding 3 man band? You could argue The Police and they were good, but they can't jam like this. Geddy Lee is insane with the bass guitar!
@vboy808 The band Sound Tribe Sector 9 has some amazing live moments... The bassist and drummer lock in like nothing else. pretty intense, check em out.
I also agree with filmguy006. Geddy is well renown for his bass work. Bass Hall of Fame - Guitar Player Magazine 6 time winner: "Best Rock Bass" - Guitar Player Magazine 1993 - "Best Rock Bass Player" Bass Player readers' poll Best Album for Bass (Snakes & Arrows) - Bass Player Magazine "Coolest Bass Line In A Song" (for "Malignant Narcissism") - Bass Player Magazine
I agree with thegr8HarV. There are some incredible songs during that period not to mention showing Rush's versatility and ability to play multiple instruments without adding any band members.
Prime Mover- Manhattan Project- Marathon- Red Sector'A'- Mystic Rhythms- Between the Wheels etc. Some of these are in my top 5 favorite Rush songs (and it's not easy picking 5!!!) lol I especially like this live recording because it has heavy drum and bass punch while Alex cuts through clean and clear.
this is a pretty sweet video mainly cuz rush if fuckin awesome but also these songs aren't on the album version. Everyone is so quick to put down the synth period of Rush (Grace under pressure-Hold your Fire) but its still pretty awesome. not as complex but really calming and mistifying
i used to watch this on a big screen 60 inches projection when i was in college late 80's. hooked the projection to a fisher stereo on VHS. total joke compared to todays tech.

Signature guitars were outstanding instruments for their day.Lifeson was integral in this guitar's overall design. And BTW as a rule Lifeson uses Paul Reed Smith guitars.RARELY Les Pauls. If he does pull out a Gibson it's usually a 355.
For the 2007 Snakes & Arrows Tour, Lifeson replaced his PRS Guitars with Gibson Les Pauls. In a 2007 interview for Guitarist magazine, Lifeson states "I hear PRS on everything these days and I wanted a little bit of a change ... I love them [PRS] but they have a smaller sound than the bigger heavier Gibsons ... I just wanted to be more traditional."[
yeah you're right.I'd forgotten that he had made a shift on the last album.I just had the prior 18 or so years previous stuck in my head.I still stand by the claim the Signatures were some badass axes in the day.
I'm interested to know what you don't like about that Signature. I know guitars sound different unplugged, but is it the sound on the video and on the albums that you don't like with the Signature? I really believe that the main cause of the sound is the digital effects, and hardly the guitar. I think if he had a Les Paul plugged in on this video it would sound very close to the same sound as the Sig... I actually love the sound & the Signature more so than any others (except the ES-355!).
I couldn't agree more.Alex doesn't strike me as the type to use a sub-standard instrument.Maybe one day I'll run across one of these at a yard sale.Just last month I found a short scale Gibson acoustic '60's era for $15.And a 1939 Bach Strad mod 101 Cornet for $10.
Excellent. And what model Signiture is it? I own an Aurora (similar to Alex's here, however mine has a curved top). I also own an Oracle (bolt on, red, flat top). They are wonderful instruments indeed! Play one of these and you'll never go back to a lame, boring, regular everyday ordinary Fender Stratocaster.
(reg log in, still me) It's an Odyssey. Blue curved top, bolt on. I have found no other that sounds like it. I does everything!!! I would like to get another one, but alas, no one wants to give them up, and with good reason.
Is it me or were those Tamas the best sounding kit to date? What the hell does he do with all these drums after each tour? Maybe I can get a snare or something Mr Peart? XD
/yeah I just gave Territories a second chance. I didn't realize how amazing it sounded. Whether Alex realized it, he's using that Mixalydian mode for that sweet lick in the intro. I love it! They use it more than I originally noticed. Gag-lly! Amazing performance. They need to take some of these tunes outta the vault... *cough* *cough* Hemispheres *cough*.
Territorries is such an underrated RUSH song. definitley one of my favorite song s from them! And what??!!! and another tour and album??? cant wait!!!
Amazing musicians. It's not just Geddy and Neil who are multi-tasking but even Alex plays the bass pedals simultaneously with his guitar. I take a bow to all of them. It's very inspirational to watch them live on stage, just playing their instruments and just enjoying themselves!
Just discovered this song. What a great tune, and lyrically as deep as Rush usually produces. Getting my Rush Tattoo this week, Yea! For the jazz enthusiasts out there, both Burning For Buddy CD's are excellent. What I would like to see someday is a Neil Peart Big Band show. Jazz is a lost art form, and rhythymically sophistocated. This generation needs to rediscover
Neil played bongos on the buddy rich tribute and cymbals first album last cut, picking up the pieces. With Kenny Arnoff. And the filled in on rehosatics (sp) whale music.
all the drums besides the simmons the timbale and the "open 6'" was the only open one he had on his hold your fire kit besides the gong bass drum of course.
To the folks below who where debating about who's a better guitarist.Eddie VH or Alex. Its like comparing apples to oranges. Both are incredibly talented. But TOTALY different styles.I will say this though,if one had to stand-in for another in a pinch. I think Alex could pull it off fairly well.If Eddie stood in front of Geddy and Neil,I think he'd pretty much get lost and bow out gracefully. Not to knock EVH,but that's just how complex some of these arrangements are.
How many rock bands nowadays an write a song with these types of lyrics and thos level of musicianship.

I have a Signature guitar! They are FANTASTIC. It does everything I could ever want and I use it to do everything!

I haven't heard Territories in years, I'd forgotten what an intense song this is.

Just Alex being Alex with his goofy antics. However you look at it, Rush is the epitome of rock - bar none!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Good musicians but damn ugly. Nowadays Alex not so much but Geddy still has his huge nose and Neil just looks cranky.

Neil's cranky, hunched look got him all the chicks in the 80s
HaggyWaggy 3 years ago 2
Well, how would you look if you had to focus on hitting 30 things correctly (and in time) for 3 hours
He smiles alot off stage :)
TilCygAb 3 years ago
why the fuck does that matter? they don't care...theyre all about playing their music....not scorin chicks like alot of other
80s bands.

yeah i agree, i thought it was pretty unique myself. i thought i was the only one in the world that liked this song! rock on dude

This generation needs to rediscover

just because you just found jazz doesn't mean it was lost - welcome to the tribe, brother. 8-)

Territories is better here than the studio version IMO

FoulOwl 3 years ago 12
You're so right, Eddie is great and has a legendary sound, but Alex is much more technically sound and versatile. His chops are legendary.

If there's one Rush song that should get a remix, it's this one. It's damn close to a house music
