Sadly, I think the only reason this sounds so smooth is because they were unplugged and all you can hear is the actual band playing. I'm not even sure all of them could really play the song, hopefully they made some kind of selection or casting to make sure they all did. Still, kinda disappointed, I was wishing to actually hear all the guitars. Not saying they'd play bad or anything, but if they were plugged it wouldn't be smooth for the simple fact sound gets delayed for players in the back.
The reason Smoke is chosen is because it's so distinctive; there's no other riff like it, and it's easy enough for a beginner to play, hence - lots of people can get together to play it.
Note how it takes amusical genius to come up with something that's so simple yet no-one ever thought of before?
BTW- did the Guiness record book people check that all these people could actually play it? It's not just the main riff that has to be played y'know.
Actually, it was both guitar and keyboard playing the part.
Jon Lord doubles the guitar part on a Hammond B3 organ played through a distorted Marshall amp, creating a tone very similar to that of the guitar. Blackmore uses two fingers to pluck so the pairs of notes can be played exactly simultaneously, to match the organ's timing more closely.
So in essence, its a guitar and keyboard riff, being played simultaneously.
ha! nice idea in theory... it amazes me how many of the players have to look down at the guitar while playing this... its such a simple riff! 1,600+ players and probably not one of them got it right.
I think its kinda risky carrying a guitar on ur back when you know the only thing thats carring it is the strap. my friend did that once, and his Ibanez was no more.....
I don't know why some people are saying they didn't break the world record. You can see it at the Guinness site I believe for largest ensemble and certificates were issued from Guinness. Who is going to beat it so we can get it back? Next time time I'm not going to be shy and play and won't be wearing a speedo and an Am. flag cape or Slash gear or horns or any of that silly stuff. You guys are hilarious though!!!
You had to bring your own small battery amp. I like this video the best from the others, btw, because I spotted my daughter in it. She was 8 at the time. I'm sorry now I didn't play. Even I can play THAT song! It was a lot of fun but had to be rushed out for a ballgame. Some people hung out in the parking lot and jammed. People were honking their car horns to the riff of SOTW.
nope you're right, we didn't "BRAKE" the world record, we just broke the world record. There's a difference. Get your English straight or don't speak it at all.
To get it clear, autoreboot: This year (2009) it was over 6K guitarist at the same time, 'Hey Joe' again. Yeah, maybe I need to improve my English, but still you are pathetic
This is one of those things where you say to yourself, Why the hell didn't I think of that!? That must've been so much fun to play. I wonder how many were playing the bass riff in there.
Guitarhero3004: We all know its easy, and that is exactly why it was so popular and still is with almost every guitarist out there who has a passion for great rock and roll. What made Ac/Dc so popular. It was the very stripped down, simple guitar riffs and very easy drum riffs. And thats it. But there still an amazing band. And Smoke on the Water is an amazing song for exactly that, everyone can do it. Everyone can relate to playing it when they first started rockin' out with there first guitar.
if youre gonna put this song down for being too simple, dont pick a song like one or raining blood if youre into technical stuff, pick something that most people cant learn on guitar.
Yeah, sounds great, but it's not a world record. The world record was broken in Poland. On 1st. May 2007 1876 peoplce in Wroclaw played Jimmi's Hendrix song: "Hey Joe"
no they dont do it every year because the people whos idea it was got fired from a the radio station to be replaced with talk radio stations and now the people are sueing

We are having a go at the world record here in Adelaide Australia on the 23rd November 2007.. and its the same song..smoke on the water.. it kicks off the Guitar Festival which is happening that weekend...
I sure hope we sound as good as the people in KC. We are only allowed to have accoustic guitars tho..
