  • Thumbs up on this vital info here

  • Great video, I was lucky enough to have a coach that played first and was able to help me a ton.

  • Very helpful.

No one ever shows a kid how to play first base. Notably, this video covers necessary foot and glove work. Thank you. Unfortunately, it doesn't go into some things that may be considered too advanced, e.g., handling throws behind the runner from the catcher, etc.

Overall, I like this video very much.

  • There is way too much foot movement in this video for my taste. I plant the outside of my right foot flush against the inside of the bag. It becomes the foundation of my support since I can plant my full body weight against the bag and know that I'm not going to slip off/over the bag if/when I have to shift my weight, change direction and/or dig a ball out of the dirt. I'm 6'4 and this method really lets me feel comfortable to put my hand on the ground and stretch super far out if necessary.

  • ive played first since i started playin baseball and its still really hard hard for me to pick the ball but im getting the hang of it now

  • good stuff ditto

  • Thank you for covering the techniques of picking a ball--it was difficult to find a video like this. Good stuff.

  • I play baseball its nice

  • boy those dirt balls are the scariest thing in softball to mee. i took balsl in the chin from the fastest female pitcher in our league but didn't flinch until those bad hoops came. not until i get my mouth guard i can take a brused lip.

  • Good advice, makes a lot of sense. Will be practicing to get a feel for the corners with my heels. Thanks !

  • That is great. I've played first and I didn't know about feeling for the corners. Although, you don't have much time to do that. It is absolutely essential to keep the glove on the ground and then come up if needed, same for ground balls at any position. Nice vid.

  • I always use my right foot, it just feels more natural to me, im a right hander.

  • If u are right handed u should always use your right foot on the bag, because 1. its easier to get to the ball and 2. If you need to make a thorw after you catch the ball you dont need to switch sides and lose time there, the only time you get to choose your foot is on bunted balls, then if recieving from the cathcher you might use your left foot on the bag and yell to the catcher wether you want the throw inside the bag or outside the bag. Same on a passed ball or something like that.

  • not only that, wich, but try this at home: see how far you can reach if you put your "glove hand side" foot on the base and compare it with the other foot. you gain about 3 or 4 inches reach.

  • scooping is tough lol beginner first base it kills me haha

  • at first but once u get it down u look nasty lol..... just keep ur eye on the ball dont flinch or anything that makes it tougher

  • dude u get a farther reach if you keep your left foot on the bag! trust me i play first base. try it out!

  • thats if ur a lefty..im a righty and i keep my right foot on the bag

  • im a righty...

  • I am a righty.. I use both of my feet, depending on what side the ball is coming on.

  • uh... you technically do use both...(as a righty)

if your faceing second base and the throw is either directly to you or to the left of you you use your right foot ... but if it going more towards the outfeild use your left foot.. this way you have a better chance of catching it instead of using backhanded..

  • Great video with proper footwork
