I bought a 1979 RM400 brand new when I was 15 years old. I couldn't even touch the ground without leaning way over. I still own the bike and have loved it since day one.
I can't believe how long Roger DeCoster has been involved in racing. He's with KTM now, the first time I can remember him being involved with a European factory since his CZ days in the late 60's.
back then, the bikes were developed so much each year, you HAD to get on the new bike each year or you would get left behind. these days, they are just making the number plates smaller and harder to read each year, and adding a few gimmicks like wave rotors to keep people interested. its a tribute to japans declining economy. they cant afford to develop the bikes like they used to.
@avzeolla the main reason they were cheaper was because of the exchange rate with the japanese yen. back then it was about 300 yen to the US dollar. today, its 81 yen to the dollar.
This guy was the Team Coach of the last United States Motocross Des Nations, he said he remembered the United States 1st Appearance at the Motocross Des Nations & how none of the other countries took the USA team very serious & how France & Belgium really thought they were something & guys like Donnie Hansen, Danny LaPorte, Chuck Sun & Johnny O’Mara just went out & Ran the F-- AWAY WITH THE WINS....
I had a '82 CR250R and loved it..... it ran like a rabid pitbull, but handled like a hammock. Brakes were scary wen heated.
Nonetheless, it made me smile every single time I rode the red rocket. Raced it, but also woods rode it. Had enough torque I could traverse steep hills under the powerband. I miss my '82 CR250R.. also miss riding. Damn spinal injury. Ugh.
Thanks for posting the movie. It made me smile. Also makes me wish I was 18 again.
'Latvia'. Oh dear, don't you realise the sound is bad, that Roger is speaking a foreign language, American? He normally speaks Belgium-French (slightly different French accent). Most of the moto-guys spoke English, many also German/French/Italian. Roger speaks all of these, also Flemish/Dutch (almost the same). How many languages do YOU speak? I raced DOT and HVA in the 70's, met all the top guys. Harry Everts wife spoke pure Yorkshire/English! (au pair as a teen). Great guys, great time.
wow great to see this video. This was the time when the big 4 got really serious about incoporating novel technology in their production MX bikes. Just the fact that decoster had to get involved in re-designing the 82 CRs a year after Honda released the 81s with water cooling and prolink suspensions showed how competitive MX bikes were back then, and how strong the suzukis were in 81-82..
O yes the sound of the two strokes! This was the year Honda got it going again in motocross and the next several years they were unstopable! Great vid.
Old bike? LOL Check out the bikes from the 76 GP. Dual rear shocks. Downpipes, No leading axle forks. Now thats old school.. I can remember when the first yamaha monoshocker came out. I was still riding a Hodaka at the time. The Super Rat was crude but it was fast.
my 1st 250 was an 82 cr 250 kickstarter on the l/h side

man, that is so cool, to see those old bikes -- on the front-end of pro-link rear suspension and liquid-cooling -- this is awesome.
Hgclaw 4 years ago
you mean air cooling? cause all the new one are liquid cooling
erutemal 4 years ago
no, i mean it's good to see this first generation of liquid-cooled (cr250, cr125), single-rear shock/"pro-link" suspensioned bikes.
it's interesting to see them "new," as in this post.
Hgclaw 4 years ago
yea, that's where the big change was.
