Great voice, but back when it was needed her voice would have been "too black" to accomplish what was accomplished using Diana Ross in the lead spot of The Supremes. Sounds racist and weird in retrospect, but that was LIFE for black musicians back in the 60's

I had so much fun recording this for MotorCity with Scherrie. Pat Lewis [of the Andantes] did the background vocal arrangement, and our goal was to do something totally different than Diana's [lead and BGs], even though the music was done just like Ms. Ross's. I think we succeeded in not being a "sound alike." If you want Diana Ross's arrangement, by all means, listen to Diana's, which is the definitive one. But this is fun to me because it is NOT the same. Hope you enjoy it!

Scherrie Payne is a fantastic singer. I love her. However, I don't understand why a singer so closely associated with Diana Ross, and undoubtedly compared to her, would record this song, especially THIS ARRANGEMENT, which is so similar to the one Ashford and Simpson did for Diana Ross' cover of it? It's Diana's anthem, for goodness sake! I'm stuck on that even before examining Scherrie's performance. I feel the same way about Diana Ross recording a cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive".

Personally, I normally like the chorus "aahs" more in other covers of the Diana Ross version. But that being said, I also really like how they did the opening chorus in this version. Very ethereal!
