Well there is a memory must be over 40 years since I first Barney sing that song in a bub i Dublin and I've always remembered it, I don't think he ever sang anything else
i hear this tune i get shivers down my spine , i'm irish and love everything that is. do you realise the man that owns jacobs put hundreds of irish men and women on the dole, just so he could have more profit by sorce-ing once irish made biscuits to england , shame on you i say, how can an irish man take the food from irish mouths and justify it by saying its good business, he's a traitor to everything that our flag represents. remember jacobs 1916, there are many will never forget, but he did
this is unbelievable...all the legends on stage....may god give you years to live for us Barney....up the Dubs...what a song...imagine singing and having Luke and Ronnie backing up your voice?????....out of this world.......
This is a great performance. There is sincerity and consideration on the part of Luke to not overwhelm Barney. Ronnie always had a deep voice. Barney could cut through him. Luke was very kind in this instance when he could have buried Barney.
@ammiralowling as much as i love luke this is a barney mc kenna song, as well as "im a man you dont meet everyday", surley luke can bury anyone vocal wise if you ask me, but that doesnt neccesarily mean hed have done a better job of this song than barney
Well that is true Frank. I think there is a song for everyone. Sometimes it take a bit of looking to find your voice. All I refer to is frequency and even the consideration of volume. Given a certain setting we can all sound good or bad or in between depending upon the scope of the attentive ear. I know my vocal limitations and Barney knows his. Luke in this setting was considerate to say the least. Not all harmonizers are friendly sorts. In this instance Luke was.
No, I didn't mean Barney's singing ist bad. Just happend to recongnise, that he he puts one hand to his ear when singing. Saw this in the vid of the 40th annivesary when he sings Souht Australia, thoght there he does because of his age and wondered now in this vid, because it's much earlier. May be late 70's or so. No harm to Barney at all, god forfend.
Both Luke and Ewan Maccoll (who Luke spent a great deal of time with) used to also put a finger in one ear while singing; apparently this was so they could harmonise easier, maybe this is why Barney did/does it?
Whilst viewing The Dubliners various performances on Youtube I start paticularity to wonder if our tenor-banjo god Barney is getting deaf day by day, concerning his singing, whereas a half god on the banjo only needs the tune to perform marvelous. I wouldn`t dare to insult a man of such high musical qualities. Fror I`m no musician.
This was sung for my dad at his wake by his best friend... cant get it out of my head! Beautiful song and suited him having moved to Ireland in the early 80's. He was a fisherman through and through and loved Ireland and made it his home! Willem den Heijer 4-5-1944 27-12-2008 R.I.P.
for that occasion very appropriate, most funerals there are songs played that have no relevance to the deceased or to family for that matter. If fishing was your step dad's passion then a good choice for a farewell song. Regards from Fermanagh
A song well-suited to Barney - loved the way he put his hand around Luke's shoulder towards the end of the song. The remaining boys are doing fantastically well in spite of their advancing years. No one can hold a candle to them. John Sheehan's fiddle-playing takes some beating. Great soloist and accompanist.
kelly thats a bit harsh, john sheahan is a amazing musician as is barney, a rare talent of which we are not likely to see again, ronnie is also unique, not my cup of tea, but talented
heres to all the fishermen who have been lost in recent years. rest in peace donal

It is just a way of hearing your own voice better. It is the old way, but it works perfecly. even in these new times.

We played this at my step dads funeral.
The only time the man was happy was when he was fishing with his dog.
It seemed appropriate.
