  • heres to all the fishermen who have been lost in recent years. rest in peace donal

  • Einfach toll .. ich bin von diesen Liedern immer wieder begeistert ..

  • I love Barney. I saw them 2 weeks ago in Groningen (NL) This video is special with our all Luke Kelly.

  • Fucking Spanking there Barney...Love it millions

  • Well there is a memory must be over 40 years since I first Barney sing that song in a bub i Dublin and I've always remembered it, I don't think he ever sang anything else

    Thanks for the memory

  • come on barny ur the best

  • bless you barney and this great band!

  • Great version of this song...

  • God bless Ronnie and Luke.....we love you Barney ....!you have made this world a better place to live !

  • I almost broke down in tears hearing this.

  • i hear this tune i get shivers down my spine , i'm irish and love everything that is. do you realise the man that owns jacobs put hundreds of irish men and women on the dole, just so he could have more profit by sorce-ing once irish made biscuits to england , shame on you i say, how can an irish man take the food from irish mouths and justify it by saying its good business, he's a traitor to everything that our flag represents. remember jacobs 1916, there are many will never forget, but he did

  • is that the original version ???

    it a wonderful song

  • @Alfonsluc Barney did not sing that often , but you can hear he was very musical , like all the Dubliners ...they had loads of talent.

  • @Lisnageeragh they´re not dead. so he don´t "was" very musical, he is ;-). And they have loads of talent.

  • The song is great, of course, but the subtitles are apparently made by someone who has been smoking something bad...

  • this is unbelievable...all the legends on stage....may god give you years to live for us Barney....up the Dubs...what a song...imagine singing and having Luke and Ronnie backing up your voice?????....out of this world.......

  • GOLD!!! Gold Jerry! Gold!

  • I would love to sink a few jars with Barney he is my hero

  • brilliant, wish i could here luke sing it

  • Pure MAGIC Nuff said

  • old fishermen never die we only smell that way

  • I think I may have a new hero. :-)

  • That was magic. I love the Dubs. 5+

  • Looking forward to seeing the Dubliners in Stuttgart on Halloween 2009. Especially Barney...What a fantastic pure voice.

  • it takes barney a couple of min to warm up but when he gets going he sings grand. They will never be replaced!

  • This is a great performance. There is sincerity and consideration on the part of Luke to not overwhelm Barney. Ronnie always had a deep voice. Barney could cut through him. Luke was very kind in this instance when he could have buried Barney.

  • Most Agreed

  • @ammiralowling as much as i love luke this is a barney mc kenna song, as well as "im a man you dont meet everyday", surley luke can bury anyone vocal wise if you ask me, but that doesnt neccesarily mean hed have done a better job of this song than barney

  • Well that is true Frank. I think there is a song for everyone. Sometimes it take a bit of looking to find your voice. All I refer to is frequency and even the consideration of volume. Given a certain setting we can all sound good or bad or in between depending upon the scope of the attentive ear. I know my vocal limitations and Barney knows his. Luke in this setting was considerate to say the least. Not all harmonizers are friendly sorts. In this instance Luke was.

  • It is just a way of hearing your own voice better. It is the old way, but it works perfecly. even in these new times.

  • No, I didn't mean Barney's singing ist bad. Just happend to recongnise, that he he puts one hand to his ear when singing. Saw this in the vid of the 40th annivesary when he sings Souht Australia, thoght there he does because of his age and wondered now in this vid, because it's much earlier. May be late 70's or so. No harm to Barney at all, god forfend.

  • Both Luke and Ewan Maccoll (who Luke spent a great deal of time with) used to also put a finger in one ear while singing; apparently this was so they could harmonise easier, maybe this is why Barney did/does it?

  • @brummydubliner you do it so you can hear what your singing in your head

  • Whilst viewing The Dubliners various performances on Youtube I start paticularity to wonder if our tenor-banjo god Barney is getting deaf day by day, concerning his singing, whereas a half god on the banjo only needs the tune to perform marvelous. I wouldn`t dare to insult a man of such high musical qualities. Fror I`m no musician.

  • This was sung for my dad at his wake by his best friend... cant get it out of my head! Beautiful song and suited him having moved to Ireland in the early 80's. He was a fisherman through and through and loved Ireland and made it his home! Willem den Heijer 4-5-1944 27-12-2008 R.I.P.

  • Just like my dad.died 2004.Miss him most when I hear this song. Bet their both catching the big one's in heaven !!!!!!!!

  • a beautiful song. shcek out other versions. but tihis is the best

  • barney has such a nice voice

  • We played this at my step dads funeral.

The only time the man was happy was when he was fishing with his dog.

    It seemed appropriate.

  • for that occasion very appropriate, most funerals there are songs played that have no relevance to the deceased or to family for that matter. If fishing was your step dad's passion then a good choice for a farewell song. Regards from Fermanagh

  • So beautiful a song, even better how well Luke and Ronnie support him, I cant imagine the tunes they are ringin out upstairs...

  • This is awesome seeing the guys together. RIP Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly. Legends. I'm going to see them in Dublin....

  • Are there any other videos from this concert?

  • luke sings The Town I Loved So Well. Type in Town I Loved So Well 1980.

  • If I remember right this is a clip from a gig shown on Norwegian television in 1980. So there should be more stuff from this show out there...

  • Nice to see Barney sing.

haha the norwegians translated the cold coast of "Greenland" as "England"

  • Haha well it's been cold enough here this summer to be classified as Greenland.

  • Even subtitled in Norwegian, really good old stuff

  • Barney's like an old fiddle, he mellows

with age. God bless him, a fine version.

Thanks for posting this version Thetwangman,

    it is very much appreciated.

  • He still sings this as well as he did back then, even though he's 25 years older.

  • only slowlier

but at this song its cool

i think every dubliner can sing.

  • He sings it even beter now, with a lifetime of experience behind his weathered voice...

  • true quality , all the stars

  • a great song giving barney the chance to sing it was good he suits the song well. love it

  • great post big ty

  • A song well-suited to Barney - loved the way he put his hand around Luke's shoulder towards the end of the song. The remaining boys are doing fantastically well in spite of their advancing years. No one can hold a candle to them. John Sheehan's fiddle-playing takes some beating. Great soloist and accompanist.

  • Gammel fin Barney, og Luke Kelly, glimrende stubber:-)

  • Thats friends real real friends.

It just shines through!I so wish I had friends as this .God Bless o paddy's day

  • kelly thats a bit harsh, john sheahan is a amazing musician as is barney, a rare talent of which we are not likely to see again, ronnie is also unique, not my cup of tea, but talented

  • barney has slowed down in his old age, he sings much slower nowadays lol gr8 version

  • Where I can found this one!

    Is this on a dvd.

  • a friend of mine got a vhs copy from a guy in germany. i put it on dvd.

  • i presume it was a television broadcast.

  • @thetwangman TV broadcast perhaps, but not German. The subtitles are in some Scandinavian language.

  • @Pitfossil Read the video information. The concert was in Harstad, Norway, so I presume it was a Norwegian TV broadcast. I never said it was German.

  • @thetwangman Norwegian it is. Greetings from Finland.

  • @Pitfossil Yes, the subtitles are in Norwegian (Nynorsk - New Norwegian).

  • I love Barney! Almost as much as Luke.

  • Great job by Barney. Good to see Luke also.

  • Long live lukey x

  • and Barney;)

  • :) of course! how could i forget good auld Barney .

  • You forget John Sheahan and Ronnie Drew.

  • Why didn't like Ronnie Drew, Kelly? Not being smart asking, just wondering. By the way thanks for all the videos of Luke.

  • He's just not my kinda person at all,

all the rest of the dubs are great (Jim included)

  • Fair enough. Youre entitled to your opinion.
