  • I just saw a bunch of pictures of squirrels on the wall in this trailer..(T_T)

  • Hey I just want to say that you guys did an excellent job on creating Meline, from the ambition to do it to getting it done- and what a beautiful piece it ended up being.

It was a great idea keeping the story simple, and it shows that you did put a lot of effort into it. I wanted to ask: What render software did you use, or was it just mental ray? And how long did it take for the longest frame to render?

    All the best,

    S P

  • its awesome if you guys had a bigger crew u can make this into a great movie,i actually saw this today on videocopilot on andrews blog and i was amazed with the film after the 6 min i was like :O wheres the rest! i was hooked

  • Saw the short yesterday, its gorgeous, you guys are incredible :D

  • Its just to beautiful done and I respect you and your girlfriend, for putting so much love and time in the movie.

The result is just a amazing shortmovie about a cute girl and I hope to see more from you :)

  • I saw Meet Meline on Fubiz, I think it was. It was absolutely beautiful!

  • oh god, that was so awsome, i'can't wait to see the entire animation...

you inspired me to never give up with animation

  • Hi!

So .. I was looking for 3d renders on Flickr and I found an official illustration of Meline. You guys are awsome!!

When does the short-film come out?

And, besides Maya, what other software did you use?

  • Woaw! thanks Yukari for you kind message! :)

The film will be online this month! :)

FOr you question, we used Combustion for the compositing part :)

  • I've read on your cgsociety blog that the frames renderd in 3 minutes! that's fast on a laptop for that quality.. When I render a tree like that it takes 20 minutes! That tree in the trailer does that cast and receive shadows or are you doing a special trick, it looks amazing and great job on the Totoro feel! U guys are truly an inspiration!

  • Thanks UtubeDiode! :)

Yes, 3 minutes. I used a lot of compositing to help speed up the rendering and most of all, every objects were modeled by having in mind were and how far it would be from the camera) The tree looks like it requires a lot of poly, but it doesn't. It a mixture between polymodeling, good texturing (by Virginie) and proper lighting to highlight the key elements of the tree :)

It was essential to think every model like that, otherwise the laptop would crash! :)

  • is meet meline finished?if so, when can we see it? i saw the making, and im so inspired by it! im a student of animation, and i hope to get as good as u and virginie some day :-)

  • Yes! Meet Meline is finished! it will be online soon! :)

Good luck with your studies! :)

  • DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!

I just saw the exclusive clip and it turned out be be 1000x better than i expected!

MAN! you guys are awesome, and the music made it all!

You guys are so inspirational to me!

    great job you two!

  • Thanks Leonardo! :)

awesome news! :) I hope the film will have the same impact on you! ! :)

  • Man, I saw the short in 3D world, and I have to say again,

    I LOVE IT!

  • Thanks man! :)

I really need to get a copy of it! :)

  • I just can't wait for it. haha

  • Great job guys, just saw your short in 3D world and can't wait to see it :)

  • THanks Towley12! :)

  • Dis-moi quelque chose.

Quelle est la résolution définitive de Meet Meline?

Répondre en anglais s'il vous plaît.

  • Meet Meline is render in HD 1280x720 ! :)

Bellissimo.

  • Grazie Liberagliocchi! :o)

  • It's hard, you know... There's some many pixels and vertices :-p

  • @Edd3D Mate these guys did EVERYTHING themselves and taught themselves how to animate at the same time. From rendering, lighting, physics systems, texturing, rigging, animation, compositing and probably more, 2 years is not a long time.

  • Hahah! Thanks Towley for helping me defending myself :)

  • Cant wait to see this short movie!!!! XD

  • THanks M370dy ! :o)

  • C'est vraiment très impressionnant et l'effet tease fonctionne parfaitement : on a envie d'en voir plus. Bravo !

  • Super!

    Merci SupaDempa! :)

  • j'adore !!

j'espère que votre travail sera une réussite ! ^^

Great works for all steps : PréProd / Prod & Post !

    The magic is coming !

  • Heheh :)

    Merci skyrick (patrick)! :)

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for your comment cruasan100 ! :o)

  • i'm an animator and your passion has inspired me greatly, i really wish to give up on everything and concentrate to make a short film like you guys, but its most probably i'll starve to death before i can success... may i know how much time u both spend on the animation everyday other then your working hours?

  • HI Genewiz! :)

I work between 2 or 4 hours every nights.... but that's average I really can't say exactly, it depends a lot :)

Thanks for you comment! glad you liked it! :)

  • So Sebastien and Virgine how is the movie going??? Is it done? I hope you guys finish it soon because i am so exited about this short.

I am every day checking if you have uploaded it.

    Good Luck!

  • Thanks leonardo! :)

Check back in the the end of his week! :)

    We've got a great surprise! :)

    ...

The "making of" with behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, talks about the story, the characters and the environments, shot breakdowns and much more! :o)

  • OH this is really cool. Hope you can get the whole movie out.....found this on flickr...cool as it can be ! Greetings and good luck ! Miro i-l-o

  • Woaw! Thanks felidale! :-)

Nice to see you there and on flickr! :)

    Cheers! :o)

this looks amazing, i can't wait to see the whole thing!

  • hey mrjimmyos! :o)

Your comment makes Virgine and I so proud! :)

I hope you'll enjoy the complete film! :o)

Thanks for your comment & support! :)

  • When I saw the link to this on the CGSociety I literally gasped because I saw the WIP about one or two years ago and it looked awesome. It's great that it turned out awesome too, bravo!

  • is the grass paint effects?

  • Hi leonardo! :o)

Yes, the grass is paint effects :)

  • A*W*E*S*O*M*E = 5 huge big stars!

Also with greatings from DAD who run Creative Photo and Creative Master at FlicR

  • Hey ! Thanks spjutkastare! :o)

Happy you liked the trailer! :o)

    See you on flickr! :o)

  • Hi Leornado! :o)

No, this is not indirect lighting (way to long to compute on a laptop). As you've notice, we've just simulated our lighting by setting multiple lights together. It's easier and faster to tweak the lighting! :o)

    Cheers! :o)

  • Hey!!! Uhh, is that indirect lighting or just a bunch of lights put together? How you guys doing with the short by the way????

  • A wonderful and most beautiful trailer. I'm looking forward to seeing all your hard work pay off.

    Best,

    Ash.

  • Thanks ashaman69 ! :o)

It will be complete very soon ! :o)

  • Great work!! I followed the thread at cgtalk every now and then. Didn't comment there because it was a too big of a thread and to high quality to give meaningful comments :P.

And congratulations with your wedding, keep it up!

  • thanks tillaart36! :o)

Glad you're following the progress of "Meet Meline" and that you like it! :o)

We just can't wait to show you! :o)

    Thanks! :o)

  • are you using on face controls for the face expressions?

  • Hi Leonardo!

    No we're not :o)

You've used basic blendshape to create all the facial expressions. Around 30 poses were created and then blended together :o)

    Thanks for your support! :o)

  • its the short going to come out before the end of this year?

  • Hi Leonardo!

WE are middle of post production. The film should be read in about a month or two. Today, we are mixing all the sounds ! :)

Thanks for your interest Leonardo ! :o)

  • I agree, some technical direction would be great. For example, did you use renderman or MR? Shave for hair?

  • Hi Rubent!

"Meet meline" is redered with "Maya Software", exept the "Meline" character, which is done in MR (we used MR only for the sking shader) and the Occlusion pass.

For you second question, "Maya Hair" was used to create the hair! :o)

Thanks for your interest! i hope you liked the trailer! :o)

  • Wow it looks like inderect lighting was used.

  • I'll take that as a compliment, thanks! :o)

It was way less cpu consumming to fake it with omnis or spotlights! :o)

Since we are working on laptops, I think we've made the right choise! :)

    Thanks rubent! :o)

  • will it be a real movie??? cause i want to see all of it.

  • Hi Kumiiue! :o)

Yes, it's going to be a 7min long short film! We are still working on it, it will be complete very soon! :o)

thansk for the great comment! :o)

  • Really professional, it could easily pass as a movie or in my case as a video game. That´s some well done job there.

  • Thanks frostare! :)

    That's a really nice compliments! :)

I really hope you'll like the complete shortfilm! :o)

  • very very nice animation....i love the whole video....keep it up

  • Woaw! :o)

    Thanks vincelogesh! :o)

  • Really really great work. Waiting to see the final movie and making.

    Great going, Congrats..

  • Thanks clicksubhendu! :)

Virginie and I hope you'll like it! :-p

  • Hey Sebastien!(its me, Leonardo Gulli, i just switched the account so that you don t think i am asking to much on the other.) I was wondering the way you animate a rope or a chain. Is it an IK handle with a curve?

  • Comment removed

  • Here comes another question!

Do you create a normal camera or camera with aim or camera with aim up?

  • Hi Leonardo! I'm always using a camera with aim. I'm more comfortable with it ! :o)

    Cheers! :o)

  • Congrat. I like your job. :-)

  • Thanks Photolinehu ! :o)

  • still humbly waiting on this :) Everything going well? :)

    -Gijs

  • Hi Revvels, Yes, everything is doing ok! :o)

We are working on the sound mixing. It just takes some time! :o) But don't you worry! :o)

Thanks for you support Revvels! :o)

  • Your Trailer is absolutely amazing to me, and inspiring. I've have been taking a 3D animation class on Maya for a whole year now in high school but not even close to having the knowledge and skill that you and Virginie have right now. I have only the basics of using blend shapes and curves to make expressions, and also, did you use enviromental fog, or a spotlight effect to give the surroundings an earthly tone? Totally awesome though. All Maya rendered right?

  • Thanks Kemuri123 !:o)

Yes, everything was rendered with Maya Software (exepte the skin of Meline, done with Mental Ray). As for your other question, I tried to mix volume fog, volume lights, particules and environmental fog in combustion to get what we wanted! Glad you like the result man! :o)

Good luck with your studies! It should be fun ! :o)

  • I am a computer arts student and I have to say I love this trailer I think it looks amazing, and it has actually inspired me to focus my final year project on developing my technical art skills, I was actually interested in how you developed the skeleton in the face for controlling the facial animation.

  • Hi Mikecass86! :o)

The facial expression are done using just simple blend shapes in Maya. We've created around 30 blendshapes, and mixed them together!:o)

Thanks for your wonderful comment, and best luck with you studies!:o)

  • I like this movie already, can't wait till it is finished! ^^

The graphics are done very well, by only the two of you? O_o

  • Thanks Artheya! :o)

You're right, we were only 2 on the graphics (Virginie and I)

    Thanks for your comment! :o)

  • wow, such great GCI animation 5 stars, look really great, cant wait for the finish, Meline i presume is the girl's name, reminds me of Final FantasyVII: Advent Children, hell the CGI quality on your work reminds me of that movie, and that was top notch CG, great job

  • Woaw! Thanks for this very enthusiastic comment Tommy ! :o)

We are glad you enjoyed this trailer! :o)

Can't wait to show you the finished film ! :o)

  • Sorry, I think i wrote it wrong. I mean Character faces, what is you technique for modeling you characters head?

  • Yes Leonardo! :o) We started modeling our character's head by using a Box. Tweaked the vertices to match our drawing, and then we added more division to our cube, and so one :o)

  • what is your technique for face modeling?

  • Hi Leonardo!

We only use polygon modeling for all the modeling. We took many reference pictures, and started molding every props and sets from a single box that you extrude, cut etc :o)

  • OMG this looks soooo promising!! wonderful!!!

  • Woaw ! Thanks Eddy ! :o)

Glad you loooved the trailer ! :o)

Thanks for your comment ! :o)

  • the lighting and the scenary reminds me of fable 2.. good work man

  • Thanks deadcell! :o)

  • this is just beautiful sebastien! really like the feeling of the trailer!. question..

    how did you make the fog? and the tiny particles that flows in the air? thanks (;

  • Thanks Dennis! :o)

Everything that you are refering to is done with Maya! :o)

The fog is done with a "volume fog" sphere, and the particules are done with particules system to which i added a turbulence field :o)

    Thanks again ! :o)

  • Thanks Vecta ! :o)

  • Everything about the animation so far is absolutely amazing -- the models, the textures, the lighting, the camera movements, everything. I can't wait to see more!

  • Woaw! :o)

    Thanks Sparrowskit! :o)

... and I can't wait to show you the complete film! I hope you'll like it too! :o)

  • has a release date been set yet

  • Hi fusionrmotorsports!

Nope, not yet. The film is almost complete, but the release date hasn't been set yet! :o)

    ... but soon! i swear ! :o)

  • Great, ive been waiting on this for a long time. Me and a group of friends recently started writing for a short animated film were going to produce. Ive shown them all this trailer as well as some screens from your site for inspiration. Cant wait til its done! Great Job so far.

  • Woaw! We'r happy about that! Thanks man! :o)

Good luck with you future project then! :o)

J'suis allez voir tes montage! C'est très réussie!

(J'espère aussi que tu t'es bien amusé au mariage!) :)

  • great work , cant wait to see more.

btw how did u make a camera shaking ? ur camera look very realistic.

  • Hi Xanzhra!

The camera movement is just simple keyframe animation! :o)

I have a camera myself and I shot a lots of things from moving children, people running, cars, bugs or even to people standing still. I tried to analyze all the footage I shot and pointed out what makes a camera move like a real camera. I then applied these rules that I've learned, while animating cameras in a 3D environment! :o)

    Thanks! :o)

  • Sorry to ask so much but I had this question since I first saw this trailer, did you started doing the fence by creating a curve which then you extrude a cylinder to make a surface? Is that what you did?

  • It's just a simple circle extruded along a curve! :o)

Glad you find so much interest in " Meet Meline" ! :o)

  • How long do you estimate the short is going to be?

  • Hi Leonardo!

The short will be 7 minutes long! :o)

Thanks for watching! I hope you liked the trailer! :o)

  • Hey, me again.

for how long have you working on maya?

  • Hi!

I been using Maya since 5 years now. I started in 2004 while doing my short film "Running Away" ! :o)

  • Really beautiful!

    5*

  • Thank you very much ParallelProblems!!! :o)

  • Hey! Great to see the trailer out after watching the cgtalk thread for a couple of years!

The look, style, lighting and compositing is truly impressive, I like the 'overexposed' aspect of it. Great work! :D

  • Thanks minifong! :o)

That's so nice to hear people that followed the production on the cgtalk blog! they use to see still pictures! The feedbacks were great!

And now, we have the same feedback with teh moving pictures! and that such a relief! :o) I hope you'll like the complete film as well! :o)

Thanks for watching and you time, minofong! :o)

  • that 's impressive Sebastien, how long do you working on this?

  • Thanks dsfage! :o)

We've been working on "Meet Meline" since 2 years now! :-)

    It's almost complete! :-)

Glad you enjoyed the trailer! :o)

  • did you use renderman for this project?

  • We rendered everything with Maya Software, exept "Meline" which is done under MentalRay (The hair are Maya software though) :)

Every pass is assembled in compositing! :)

  • This is really fantastic. I've watched this trailer a million times and I still cant stop. Good job there.

  • Thanks Leonardo! :)

Glad you whatched it so many times! :)

  • How many people are working on this?

  • Hi pikachux1000!

Virginie and I are working on it. We're only two.

But the music and the sounds are made by 2 other guys! :)

I hope you liked the trailer! :o)

  • This is beautiful. I've been following your progress on this for a while - great lighting rig! Amazing what you guys are doing with just two laptops. Amazing detail in the animation too. I am in awe. Can't wait til it's done.

    :o)

  • Thanks Smartbluecat! :)

Can't wait to show you the complete film ! :o)

thanks for your comment and support! :o)

  • Awesome preview! I look forward to seeing the final movie. Great Job! ;-D

  • Thanks JZInner! :o)

  • Hey Sebastien, Your WELCOME! I am impressed with the visuals and animating in this. How do you find the time to make this high of QUALITY video? I hope to make this good of 3D someday. Excellent! Love it ;-)

  • Thanks JZinner! :o)

I guess passion and 4 hours sleeps per night really combine ! :o)

Good luck with your own project men! :o)

Hope you'll like the whole short film ! :o)

  • Haha - Being DEPRIVED of much sleep(and being in pain, for ME) is mandatory with 3D movie making. It's JUST ME, Jay making all my movies and voices for my movies lately, BUT tell me WHEN we can see the FULL Meet Meline movie! I want to see your masterpiece man! Looks awesome, and Meline is so darn CUTE - ;-}

  • AHhah thanks JZInnerTube! :o)

As for your question, unfortunately, I can't answer exactly when is the release date. We are in talk with some people about the future of "Meet Meline". It's just the beginning of the exchange.

... but the film is almost complete (the mix of the sounds is what's left) :)

Thanks for your comment ! :o)

  • Cool! I look forward to the release of this movie, however you guys do in the near future. Awesome! Hope making this is worthwhile for you & Virginie. Hope you have much success with it. Cheers! ;-)

  • hi Ivan! :o)

Glad to see you there!!! I really hope you'll like the final movie! :o)

thanks for your comments and support! :o)

    Merci pour ton commentaire!

    a très bientôt! :o)

  • This is excellent, even the jump from the ladder. Nothing wrong there

  • Thanks MannieBrown ! :)

  • I'm following it from CGS!

    You are awesome guys! Awesome!

Can't wait atall to see the final version!

    *Subscribed her!*

  • Thanks mim3dot! :o)

Glad you are a CGS follower! :o)

  • I think you should reconsider the camera angle as she is climbing down the latter. When she jumps off the latter at 24 seconds, is it really necessary to have the dress go up to her stomach?

As someone who knows a little bit about 3d animation, I know every action/detail/camera angle is precisely calculated, so I find it a bit odd that you would include such detail as that on a 5 year old.

  • well most ppl wouldnt even think like that when its such a small kid

  • Thanks :o)

  • I see what you're saying :-)

  • Very impressive Sebastien! I have to say man your work is getting better and better man! Great job! I can't wait to see the finished product!

  • Thanks jweinrub ! :o)

    Glad you liked it !!!:o)

thanks for your great comment ! :o)

  • No problem man. By the way, will Running Away be completed also, or is it done for good?

  • Hi jweinrub! :o)

No Running Away is a complete short film. It' was done as a school project :)

  • i just saw the trailer in highend3d, this is Stunning!!! Fantastic work!!

Thank you for taking the time and efforts to make this movie, I'm eager to see it!

its very rare to see such expressive and moving eyes look in 3d character, that shot and the opening shot are TOP, the girl when she is playing is perfect

  • Thanks Akushali ! :o)

Hope you'll like the complete film ! :o)

  • This looks awesome. Where will I be able to see the short movie when it`s released? Are you going to upload it to YouTube?

  • The film will be released this summer! :o)

Thanks for your comments fuzzycabin ! :o)

  • amazing, the opening shot looks incredible. i take it all maya and combustion?

  • Comment removed

  • Encore le Flamby et sa blonde qui se la petent en 3D :-).

Bravo Seb et Vivi (je sais qu'elle adore), vous faites un boulot remarquable. quand vous voulez vous m'apellez pour le champagne !! Bizz

  • Merci mon stephen ! :o)

    A bientôt! :o)

  • Sebastien,

All your works are very well done. I´ve seen all of them and the directing and photography are always spectacular. You can really tell a story with basically a camera and a lambert shaded cube.

It´s been a pleasure to watch the development (via cgtalk) even before I started with art and 3D. I couldn´t understand a word of all those maya tricks... lol

    Very nice work!

Looking foward to seeing it finished soon!

    See you!

  • Woaw! Thanks for your comment fade2blackened! That means a lot! :o)

We're really happy you enjoyed the trailer! I hope you'll like the film as well ! :o)

Again, thanks for taking teh time to watch the trailer and that nice comment! :o)

You made my day ! :o)

  • this is spectacular, it really suck you in, well done!

  • Thanks curlyhead94 ! :o)

Glad you liked it ! :o)

  • Amazing work. 5* frm me.

How long is the movie and how much men work on this?

  • Thanks mmvshabeer! :o)

The short film will be 7minutes long! and we are 2 graphist working on it, 1 composer and 1 sound designer! :o)

    I hope you'll like it! :o)

  • Thanks AMVtheburning! :o)

  • Amazing

  • Thanks Pissed555 ! :o)

Glad you like it ! :o)

  • wow very nice! i love the lightning and rendering!

  • Thanks dmp85 ! :o)
