Well you can choose to call it what you want, but personally Egypt for me is only my nationality 'Egyptian'. Next comes the continent which is Africa. The Arabs as a people historically are the inhabitants of the Arab Peninsula. Egyptians as a race were never identified as 'Arabs', they just mixed with the Arabs from the peninsula like they mixed with the Greeks or the Romans. The only identity that is specific to Egypt and is authentically Egyptian is the Ancient Egyptian identity.
The 'Arab' identity was re-inforced by Nasser and introduced into the country title as the Arab Republic of Egypt - but that doesn't make it the reality. It's like calling an American 'English' because he speaks English.
hhhmmmm.. history and geography.. Two subjects I hated the most in school! ;P
Well if we're going to start discussing history we all know that "the ancient Egyptians" used people as slaves back then.. You know.. The "Arabs". That was a long time ago of course.. But how do we know which one do we belong to!?
So let's not take pride in something that might be offensive to us as people.. Then again.. You are a pharaoh.. Em hotep your majesty. ;)
Ah, but it's essential to know your history my friend. :) Here's news for you..the Arabs used slaves too during and after Islam arrived! This includes the prophet of Islam himself. It was accepted behaviour by the major juristic schools of Islam until the 19th century. Just type 'slavery' and 'Islam' on google.
Slavery in Ancient Egypt was mainly directed towards Egyptians and war captives, so I don't know where you got that the Arabs were exclusively the slaves from. I find it amazing and sad that you might be offended by Ancient Egypt as an Egyptian yourself..the cradle of civilization till this day and age, and the only Egyptian identity that sprung out of Egyptian soil. Anyone on Earth would be so proud to take your place and belong to this great civilization.
I didn't say that Arabs were exclusively slaves.. what I'm trying to say is that what we know as Egypt today is a mix of all.. so why say something like "i don't see egypt as an 'arab' country at all."? If I'm proud of something I am proud that our people are the most humble people on earth and the most loved by anyone.. but your tone suggests otherwise.. and that is offensive to Egypt. We are not racist. :)
If a person from Cote D'Ivoire says that he is not French, would that be racist?? Sure, Egyptians are a mix of many cultures that came and conquered Egypt: Greek, Roman, Arabs..e.t.c. Would it be correct to say that Egypt is Roman? No historically and racially Egyptians are a mix, but their original and authentic civilization is the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Happy new year, hope you have a good one. :)
i learned from history that Egyptians r sons of Ham, n Arabs r sons of Sam! n i was always wondering, "so why the Egyptians r trying to be arabs more than the arabs themselves" ..till now i dont find an answer! .. :o) its the first time i see an egyptian trying to be egyptian
