  • DON'T FORGET BOB DYLAN & JOHNNY CASH

  • this looks lioke before monsters of folk. all these guys were in bright eyes at some point. bright eyes is connor oberst, mike mogis and whomever they are hanging out with at that poiont. so was the mystic valley band

  • CONOR *_______*

    amazing cover.

  • look at these bashers. everyone is equal, well.. except for you, because you are a douche for criticizing shit you'll never amount to. KUDOS

  • can not stop listening to them, they are amazing !

  • m ward looks like a retard, oberst looks like a punk kid, and jim james looks like he wrote the song

  • @lionsbeardmane I really hope for your sake that you don't actually think any of them wrote Girl from the North Country.

  • jim james shouldn't be there....he is way above those two as far as musicianship goes

  • @somethinnotbeentaken they are all really good stop bitching

  • these guys always know how to make a song their own. Every time like call on tyrone.

  • DisneyPrincess987? Ok, cool username!

  • Seriously, folks: I love this one and I love Dylan's original, why do we have to argue about it? This is about music, not about someone's ego!

  • I love all these guys, but they absolutely butchered this song in this performance. Sorry

  • Keeping Bob's beautiful art alive! Good for them!

  • This is one of my fav songs, I like their cover; just wish it was longer. i think the version i listen to the most is Bruce Hornsby's version.

  • Man they cut out the best verse!

"And I'm wondering if she remembers me at all/ Many Times I've often prayed/ In the darkness of my nights / In the brightness of my days"

  • IMHO , best version is Sam Bush's....

  • Comment removed

  • This version is absolutely amazing. I mean, I love the JC/BD version, but this one is just... wow.

  • The Eels have a great cover of this song on the Live With Strings album.

  • This is better than the Bob Dylan-Johnny Cash version.. hahahaha just kidding. nice try tho

  • The bonus of this cover?? The pedal steel guitar and the great voice of Jim James.

  • I do not like Coner Oberst voice at all. Ruins it for me. Now stop getting so goddamn butthurt by people's opinions, folks. You're sad.

  • Holy Hell, listen to Jim James sing this then go put on Dylan's Skyline verison and listen to how after when u listen to it james reminds you of him, not ALL THE WAY but man is that weird.

  • When i was younger about 18 i wasnt keen on dylan or conners voice but i learnt its not how you say it ,its what your saying and with feelin that trully matters.

  • this is crazy, for years i've heard so many bob dyaln comparisons and felt like connor was a modern day dylan but i've enver heard him coment on that, and especially never cover him. this is great.

  • oh how i love you all :)

  • brilliant

  • Lyme Disease

  • You forgot to mention Mike Mogis in the title. Thought I should let you know because you forgot.

  • Everyone can sing... everyone sings... To say someone can not sing simply makes no sense... aside from all these men being able to sing... they have the balls to do it in front of the world

  • i dont like connors voice in this style song. m. ward and yim yames are great.

  • what instrument is Mike Mogis playing here?

  • @NickHampsonMusic pedal steel

  • @NickHampsonMusic pedal steel guitar

  • DONT FORGET MIKE MOGIS

  • @Funkfernsehen Honestly I like Mike Mogis better than Conor Orbest.

  • Matt looks so weird when he's singing.

Holding up his guitar like that. :P

    Cute still.

  • @cateyyy567 h was kinda standing like jemaine from foc there... lol

  • @cateyyy567 h was kinda standing like jemaine from foc there... lol

  • Uhhhm..... they didn't write this song!

  • i am a huge fan of ward and conner oberst. but I would love to listen to Jim Jimes do this dylan cover all by himself. to me. his voice really captures the emotion of this song.

  • Living proof x3 that the vocal ability bar is set just about as low as it's gonna' get.

  • @graag49 I think technically the actual writer of this song set the bar down there first...but good music has never just been about vocal skills, that's what shit like American Idol is for,

  • @graag49 Lol 'cause people really give a fuck about "vocal ability". Go listen to Susan Boyle if thats what you care about

  • i think i could listen to this song every night, a lullaby to carry me home :)

  • I'm sorry but their voices just do not harmonize well.

  • Why the hell did he say they wrote this song?

  • @butson89 he thought it was funny, like sarcasm and stuff.

  • @DarwinDiabl0 gotcha. that makes sense haha i just got a little irritated. you don't mess with dylan! jk

but this is a great performance.

  • I assume he was just making a joke about writing this song, or he just didnt know what they were about to play. I'm sure everyone knows this is Bob Dyan's song. However, they do a really good veersion of it!

  • sung just like the version with johnny cash

  • Heh, way better than the Dylan-Cash version.

  • Its nice seeing Conor all healthy looking like this.

  • @MysticGrant hope you know this is liek 6 years old

  • @xinthisdiaryx yeah liek liek liek yeah I do. How does my comment suggest that I thought this was recent..

  • This is not just the four of them. It's Monsters of Folk.

  • jim james totally nails dylans nashville skyline era crooning!

  • silly conor ive always said you are the bob dylan of our generation but i didnt mean literally...:p

  • I think this is the worst version of a dylan song i've ever heard. and i love these 3 guys. jim man what were you thinking???

  • Don't forget Mike Mogis :)

  • i feel like jim has to dumb himself down when he plays with these guys

  • @BenjaminJames00 the thing is he has the best voice by far so yes, i see what you mean...if he lets himself loose with that golden perfect voice of him when he plays with them it makes the rest sound so bad in comparison. i LOVE all 3 of the other guys, don't get me wrong- they are all so talented in their own right and each has their specialty- this is a cover but Conor is the best and most original lyricist by far, M. Ward and Mike Mogis tie for best multi-instrumentalists by far.

  • Anyone know when this was recorded?

  • @evercleareverclear That is the set of Austin City Limits, Austin, TX

  • @evercleareverclear 2004. I was there. Austin is my city. I was 13, had my first boyfriend, this was our 1st date. Indescribably good. Austin City Limits is a good show (its on PBS weekly), they let Bright Eyes and all the musicians feel at home, the workers do well. The entire concert is beyond words- almost magical. We went to what's called "tune-up" the day before at the studio and got to meet Conor, Mike, Jim, and Matt (M. Ward). All were very sweet to us star-struck kids. I'll never forget

  • Yeah if you've ever actually heard the recording where bob Dylan and Johnny cash perform this together the harmonies are horrendous! Not harmonies at all and they were obviously trying to mimic that specific recording with this...don't ask me why, but I think conor oberst is every bit the poet that Dylan was and it's obvious Dylan has influenced his writing as well... As far as ward...that guy is super talented as well. You're a dumbass if you think this is insulting to "folk" or to Dylan or wh

  • saw these guys play this live at the VIC Theatre in Chicago. best show i've ever been to hands down.

  • m ward looks drunk as shit.

  • god that was a good tour

  • Mike Mogis shreds that pedal steel!

  • i am going to build a time transporter device. i am going to send jim james back in time to sing this with j. cash and joni mitchell.

  • mogis needs to be in this title. he's undoubtedly the best instrumentalist in monsters of folk.

  • @neilchap87 yea everything mogis does is gold.

  • @neilchap87 idk m.ward is a pretty excellent multi instrumentalist

  • i love these guys and dylan even more. this is awesome.

  • Monsters of Folk!!! What a great band.

  • nice vid. should consider putting mike mogis in the title as well tho.

  • They probably got together to write a song, but ended up not coming up with anything. So, therefore he probably said that as a joke.

  • i like each one of these musicians better than the next. I literally cannot decide which one is my favorite. And to think the three greatest contemporary folk singers are playing my favorite Dylan song? I just came a bit.

  • @MarcoEsquand0las. jim james is greater than oberst and ward combined.

  • I only wish Dylan was this good.

  • @ctaylor252 there used to be a version with Dylan and Cash on youtube...it is undoubtedly as good as this

  • @TheFred1313. joni mitchell and j cash is the best version imo.

  • @kyleceaserrocks

Haha, did you seriously just criticize someone's singing abilities in a post where you defend Bob Dylan? And say that these guys are ruining folk music when Bob Dylan was viciously attacked with the same line?

    Jesus christ.

  • @fratleyiskewl

    Hey great comeback.

I think they actually shouted 'Judas' to Bob all those years ago.

    Ahhhh chuckles!

  • @kyleceaserrocks

Kyle it's called stage humor. Do you not seem him smile and kind of laugh after he got done saying "this is what we came up with." And what fratley said you're criticizing someones voice while defending dylans? Granted you're entitled to your own opinion that dylan is far better than oberst and many would agree with you. But i doubt that many would agree with you saying Ward cant sing. Also How can you say they don't have respect for folk. They covered a DYLAN song!

  • This is great! why the hell did he say they wrote this tho? lol still awesome

  • Comment removed

  • m ward is drunk as hell

  • @julianzfarm I love M Ward... but hes pretty much allways drunk when he proforms at least he does a good job

  • @forrestjake1 - and how is it that you apparently know this? Do you go to every show and converse with him before hand? I think you'd be better off to reserve your comments and keep them to yourself.

    M. Ward is an amazing performer, period. You're an awful speller, and a judgmental douche.

  • preciosa!

  • Nice shirt M. Ward

  • Yeah, man. add mike mogis to the title. wtf. i love all these guys.

  • is there anywhere i could download this?!?! favorite dylan song.

  • Matt looks like he is telling some people off, drunk as a dog at 1:45

  • @BradL33T

    it's called a joke

  • the title should include mike mogis. the cover wouldnt be the same with out him

  • this is before monster's of folk was official?

  • @lespaulnasty31 yeah this was a long time before monsters of folk

  • @lespaulnasty31 Yes long before actually

  • will johnson wasn't with them either.

  • monsters.

  • This song was originally a Bob Dylan song. The first recorded version of it appears on "The Freewheelin Bob Dylan." Later, Dylan and Johnny Cash cut it as a duet on "Nashville Skyline."

  • love.

  • this is monsters of folk... yet you just typed out all the artists in the band.. lol

  • that is because when this was filmed they weren't called monsters of folk it was just a joint tour which was called : spend and evening with m ward jim james and bright eyes. but initally this was the tour that got MOF going

  • Comment removed

  • I puke now. peanut butta on the brain

  • Them boys got talent.

  • Matt Ward can play the fuck out of a guitar

  • isnt this a bob dylan song?

  • It is!

  • He was being ironic.

  • @xinthisdiaryx It's Bob Dylan w/ Johnny Cash. It was featured on both of their albums.

  • JIm James has a powerful voice. I love all of these guys. I especially love Conor and Mike of course. Especially MIke, he's incredible at banjo, mandolin and pedal steel and so many other things I don't think he gets enough credit for all he does in Bright Eyes.

  • This is ridiculously good, I've never heard a Dylan song covered so beautifully/well.

  • this is real nice :)

  • This is like one of my fav songs especially the way conor sings it

  • beautiful. 3 of my favorite musicians singing my absolute favorite dylan song. thanks for posting this, it's truly amazing

  • @adamb2288 4 of mine. :) All 4 of these guys are now in the band "Monsters of Folk" and although not quite as good as Bright Eyes they are still REALLY good, all Bright Eyes fans/fans of each musician will LOVE them, check them out folks. :) AND I WAS THERE AT THIS CONCERT :) true story :)

  • M. Ward rocking a MMJ shirt!! Nice

  • i wonder why conor said they wrote this song haha

  • Dylan-esque sarcasm

  • Exactly!

  • @thefilmerguy I have no idea why he would say that but my opinion of ol' Bright Eyes has just plummeted

  • @thefilmerguy i was wondering the same thing lol.But i love this version i mean come on pretty much all the best folk musicians on one stage!

  • @thefilmerguy

I don't think this was the song they planned to sing! You can kind of tell from the confusion beforehand haha

  • @thefilmerguy for dumbasses who actually believe him

  • @thefilmerguy

Wanted to feel like he could write something great like Dylan's work...nope.

  • whoa....is this from 2004? i saw them in portland back then...

  • Is there a full version of this show???? holy me its amazing

  • I am wondering the same thing!
