I'm not a fan of the European siren. Why do you guys over the pond use that one so much? Personal opinion is that it sounds lame and blends in with all the rest of the road noise.
@Someloke8895 False. Tests in germany showed that drivers respond earlier when there is an emergency vehicle which is driving with wail (+yelp). A Q and air horns are always better than two-tone.
@Rummeltobi Source please? I would be happy to read that article (in German or English). The main advantage of two tones (that I can see) is how easy it is to determine their direction of travel (coming towards, or going away from).
@Kraakmo Did you think that the public & the press cares about sirens?!? wail & yelp are tested in several countries where 2-tone is the only legal siren (e.g.: Italy, France, Germany). The "testers" said that the drivers react earlier and faster. If you have the correct lightning package on emergency vehicles you would see them too.
If you want watch a video: /watch?v=wgtZtDoo0CQ
American emergency vehicles have the best lights & sirens, believe me ;)
@Kraakmo Und ja, die Amerikaner geben mehrere Lichter, but im some cases, more lights tend to attract, rather than warn.. z.B. drivers will drive towards the lights (not paying attention) rather than drive away. Simple is always better...
@Rummeltobi You've shot yourself in the foot there mate.
"wail & yelp are tested in several countries where 2-tone is the only legal siren (e.g.: Italy, France, Germany). The "testers" said that the drivers react earlier and faster."
Of course they'll get out the way faster, I'ts a completely different sound to what they're used to, so it gets their attention more.
It'd be like having a Q siren replaced with a gong. You'd take notice of it, because it's different.
@Rummeltobi American emergency vehicle lighting is pretty good, but I don't like that they use a lot of red lights, and the lighting laws and regulations are very inconsistent... I don't really have much of an opinion on sirens though to be honest... I like powercall sirens, the Q is OK, I like the EQ2B, I like most yelps and wails and the hi-lo... Martin horns sound OK but they seem very effective... so yeah.. LOL
@Rummeltobi Of course it;s extremely important to the public that the siren is effective. The yelp/wale/q is extremely loud (like the martinshorn) over here in america, further than 150 ft, it is hard for me to determine which way the vehicle is going. I know that most Germans want American Style Fire Engines (lights and sirens), but in my opinion, the Martinshorn is safer and more effective.
@Rummeltobi Very interesting report.. I cant understand the two Sanitäter that they first interviewed, they speak like Bavarians!
However, is the problem that the signal is not loud enough, or the signal itself? Perhaps this is part of the debate as well. From my experience, it is the same in America, people become used to hearing sirens, they do not respond to it any more. Bring an american siren to Germany = more people moving over, bring a martinshorn to america = more people moving over!
@ksb2050 it actually hardly blends with other city and traffic noise. And why we use so many european sirens? For the same reason why you in the US use american sirens.
you didnt manage to catch the HP turning out at any time

@ksb2050 We think the same about "Q" sirens. In fact I'd say we dislike Qs even more than you guys dislike two-tones.
Two tones are easier to hear at distance and generally you can tell what sort of emergency vehicle is coming up behind you.
Someloke8895 2 months ago
@Someloke8895 Dislike Q's? That's crazy talk lol. To each their own I guess...

@ksb2050 Haha, Well before 2 tones, we used bells. Whereas you guys used like mini air-raid sirens.
So I guess that's why, you used weeeeeeehooooooo, whereas we were, dring dring dring

@Rummeltobi Except Germany uses exclusively Two tone sirens, so hearing something different would obviously get their attention more.
A mixture of Wail/Yelp/Hyperyelp/Two tone is the way to go.
