it was a bad call, and maybe replay should be used more. you have to respect joyce's very heart felt apology and admission of error afterwards, he didnt make the call to get the spotlight on himself, i think that is evident.

The big thing to take away from this is not the blown call, but eliminating the human element in situations like this.

I don't see why they just don't review the tape & overturn the call. Everyone makes mistakes, even umpires. Apparently the umpire went to the pitcher & appologized after the game. Hopefully this can get overturned.

Replay needs to be used at least in situations like this one, you can't, and I mean it, you can't miss a call like that. Whether is safe or out, it doesn't matter, if you as an umpire have to make a call like that, it-doesn't-matter if the runner it's barely safe or barely out when you are just one out away of a perfect game , you MUST call it out. It's instinctive. Here the runner was easy one step away of the base, could he have had an easier decision than that?

It was a close play and you look at replay in slow motion and then say its a bad call. Umpires see the play from one angle and the replay is show from a bunch of different replays from different angles and in slow motion. Then they pause it and you wanna shit on the umpire. Instant replay should be used more but I don't blame the umpire. It sucks it should of been a perfect game but shit happens.

@joey1324 It really wasn't a close play. That's why they're major league umpires, because they are trained to see and hear exactly what happens. He had a perfect view of the play, knew the situation, and still blew the call. It's unacceptable to just cop out and say, "shit happens".

Yeah man, horrible call by him and he's one of the most respected umps in MLB apparently. Terrible call, I don't care if he actually beat the throw by a small hair, you should still call it an out, he blew it and he knows it. HAHA!!! Deuchebag of the year, love it. It's true though even if he did apologize, he still ruined a perfect game and you don't do that. Just as bad as blowing the last out of the last game of the world series and the other team comes back to win. Terrible call!

@bcmvp11 professional umpires should NEVER miss those calls. He should know the situation he's in. Last out of a perfect game, close play, it's an out....his first instinct was to call the runner safe. I have a HUGE problem with that.

I think that Jim Joyce should be fired! Everyone saw it. MLB needs to change it to a perfect game. The Tigers should've protested the game. I think some managers-Lou Pinnela, Billy Martin ect. - would have got suspended after a serious rage.
