@echicao This would be a better question for youtuber Katzcradul to answer. Please visit her channel with this question. Good question, please let us know what she said.
@DanielSnedden After using the zip seals they begin to wear out and fail. So we only use the zip seals on things we need to rotate like sugar/flour and the things like beans and rice are better served with heat sealing.
just a quick ? on the 5 gallon buckets of sugar.if no o2 absorbers are used how did u pack?just a gamma lid?since i have 4 kids and i heard children in your vid, have you stored any koolaid mix just to offset plain water for them?just wondering......awesome videos please keep up the good work
@bubbaredneck59 We just expelled the air by hand sealed it up. Some use a straw and suck vacuum the air out of the mylar bag and then seal it. The koolaid would be a great thing to have on hand for the kids. The only problem I see is the amount of sugar it takes to make koolaid sweet enough for kids. You probably better load up on the sugar if you are planning on providing that stuff for the kiddos.
You should think about buying wheat berries instead of flour because they can be grounded into flour and stores a lot longer than flour. Grind the berries when you need flour. Also, I would only use food grade buckets. I get mine free from publix bakery.
Ive quit using the mylar bags in the buckets for all of my items other than flour. I figure thats another way to save a few bucks here and there. Most dried goods dont require the bags when the items are in buckets. Less money spent on the bags is more spent on food and saving money is the name of the game, anymore...lol. My main purpose for the buckets is keeping critters at bay. Anyway, nice video and Im off to can some beans...you get a new sub...take care.
Is that water tank you have like 250 gals? I checked that reference site for mylar bags but they don't sell those tanks. Can you direct me to the people you got your tank from?
@apaulanarius Please visit my channel and watch the videos on water storage. You will find the links for the storage tank in the info boxes of each of the bulk water storage videos and their respective updates.
Those buckets came from a company called NAMPAC, My dad used to work there, until they got laid off. Those buckets are very sturdy, and could be resealed a lot.
What happens when you use from the 5 gallon buckets? It looks like it would be nearly impossible to reseal more than 2 or 3 times...and I would think it would take a loooong time to use any product that fills a 5 gallon bucket. Wouldn't it make more sense to vacuum seal portions large enough for the family? I am trying to make that decision myself right now, that's why I ask. Thanks
@amusingisthedawn Our Mylar bags have ziplock seals. As far as it taking a long time to use the contents of a 5 gal bucket goes that's the whole idea of using them, "bulk". When scarcity comes the contents will go fast since you will using it and bartering with them too. These buckets are filled with beans, sugar, flour, salt, rice, all of which are bulk items that don't require vacuum sealing. A vacuum sealer would be better served in foods with shorter shelf life where bulk is not an issue.
@amusingisthedawn What do you mean it would be impossible to re-seal? What do you think would be difficult to re-seal after a couple of times? The lids, whether you use a gamma seal or regular bucket lid will reseal indefinitely unless they break (which is MUCH less likely to happen with the gammas).
If you store what you eat and eat what you store then rotating the foods won't be as big of a problem. That's an ideal method of food storage.
@okieprepper Thank You.... Another question, what is your family size? I have a family of my own, a 4 month old son, and I just wonder how families that are prepping, how they are preparing.
@QadarahYahawadah Search youtube with keywords like "preppers" or "survivalist" and you will find plenty of channels with families currently readying themselves.
why not just pour the salt in the buckets it only sat underground for a few thousand years saves money on other things and that lid should be good enough wouldnt need the bag lol good vid
@MissAmarosa Go to my channel page and look for "Water Purification-Purifying water for long term storage" Then you can view the follow up videos, 20 and 40 weeks to see the on going results of the experiment. Thanks for watching. -Okie
Hello fellow okie, I'm new to prepping so questions are something I have alot of. If I used Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers could I just use plain Home Depot 5 gallon buckets?
@Gngrcpl Absolutely!! Just make sure your lids have a rubber gasket. The lids made for drywall buckets have these types of gaskets and can usually be found at Home depot or Lowes. The gamma seal lids you see in the video are best/convenient for buckets that you will be getting in and out of frequently. As I get more buckets I going to buy the regular lids with gaskets and save my gamma seal lids for things in rotation. Great question thanks for posting.
As you said, food and water are the basics; however, there is one more issue that all preppers must deal with. When the food goes in the mouth, it must come out at the end of the disgestive system. Disposal of human waste if done improperly can cause many deadly diseases. I urge you and others to check into composting human waste with a procedure named humanure. Do a search on humanure and learn the best way to dispose of human waste. It is odorless, kills all bad bacteria, and affordable.
@dwightinutah I'm already aware of humanure process, but it's not something that I think anyone wants to tackle in a youtube video. But since you brought it up maybe you could be the first. :)
I also like gamma lids, but they are so expensive!! What I do is have one gamma-lidded bucket per product and the rest of the buckets use the regular gasketed (cheap) lid. When the food is used out of the gamma-lid bucket, then I open a regular bucket and pour the contents in the gamma bucket.
If cost weren't an issue, I would use mor gammas, as it is, I would rather spend the money on more food!
@71babyjay Yep, they are expensive. You probably did the right thing by putting the money in more food. I will probably do as you did and save the lids for things I frequently get into like sugar. I'm planning to use the simple gasket lids for future stuff.
from what i have read on long term food storage, you should really take the food out of its original packaging before placing it in the mylar bags .After a long period of time the plastic/material the items r stored in tends to break down. so it would be better to take it out unless u wanna pick out small bits of plastic of of ur food. Also some of the products my be toxic. So its just a thought, other than that i think that everything ur doing is great. keep up the good work,.

@MrReadytogo09 That's good advice. I transferred the expiration dates on each product to the outside of the buckets. I guess I had better check them upon expiration and take them out of the original bags or just replace them.
We have tried 0s absorbers, then reopened the Gamma sealed buckets the next day and NONE of the air was removed.
Now, we were very diligent about ALWAYS reclosing the bags of 02 absorbers and they were not hardened, either. What we now do, is we use the vacuum from our air bed ( very small) and manually SUCK the AIR out and it works like a charm.
I also have afood Saver and then even bag in 02 reduced mylar bags and then into the buckets.
@savgal1211 Depends on the air space you leave behind after closing your bag and how many cc's of O2 absorbers you place in your bags. Vacuum sealing is great and effective, but if you combine it with O2 absorbers you will see additional benefits too. There is a link in the Info Box with a link that outlines those extra benefits.
@okieprepper It's incredibly easy to keep the ingredients & materials for home brew on hand just-in-case (although I would recommend making it at least once so you're familiar with the process). The bonus to having the materials on hand is that you can also use those same items (airlock) for fermenting veggies which is one of the oldest forms of preservation.
@okieprepper The rationalization from what I understand is that the chemicals in concrete can leach into the plastic buckets. This obviously isn't as much of a concern if you have your foods in mylar bags inside the buckets. You don't HAVE to use an actual pallet. A couple rows of 2x4's under the buckets would be sufficient. However, there are plenty of businesses who will either give pallets away or sell them for cheap ($2 each) so that's usually a more frugal option.
My only question is this..."Why didn't you open the salt bags and poor two into one bucket's mylar bag?". It just seems to me there is so much wasted space in that bucket to leave the salt in the paper bag when two could probably fit in one mylar bag/bucket. Just my two cents.
Ya might wanna consider a foodsaver type of vacuum sealer, It really helps to get as much oxygen out of our food storage to prolong the shelf life so you don't have as much waste, Any residual oxygen will lead to food spoilage. Personally, I don't trust those oxy-obsorbers too much.
@Zguitar1 The oxygen absorbers I use are so effective that they cause a negative pressure in my mylar bags. It's a vacuum effect that I could not achieve with vacuum sealer or vacuum cleaner. I have some 5 gallon buckets that are slightly caving inward on one side from the effects of the oxygen absorbers.
@vonhismean Hell yeah, I've been trying to hook with gtajmack for lunch too. I guess we're all so busy with life and prepping that we can't find time for a lunch with a buddy. I'm guilty of it. You should contact gtajmack and work on getting a luncheon setup sometime for us okies. I recently saw a video collage of several patriot videos that included that one you guys did together. @TheStealthCamper It aggravates the crap out of me when I have a friend or family member over to my house whom get to see our preps and say crap like "Well I know where I'm coming when the SHTF. All I can say is "Well I hope you at least store up enough gas to get here and you better have at least one resource that I need." They always get a dumb founded look after that response.
