From what has been mentioned throughout the series from 2005 going forward. The topic of the Doctor's regeneration in a few episodes is that his race is immortal and regenerate upon death. I think they are trying to get away from the earlier episodes (1960's thru 1980's)of only 12 regenerations.

David Tennant is still the 10th Doctor. He will regenerate BUT only to heal. He was shot on the left side (two hearts) not in the chest. David Tennant is signed on to be the Doctor till 2010.

David Tennant and RTD did an interview two weeks ago on a BBC morning show. They confirmed that (David Tennant) will in 2008 continue to be the Doctor in 3 or 4 made for tv movies but the series will return in full swing (13 episodes) in 2010. The 2008 Christmas Special special has been shot already with David Tennant still be the Doctor.... : )

Really? I think it forces him to be less of a hero, as he can never make the ultimate sacrifice of giving his life. The Doctor is more of an "ultimate hero", in my opinion, because he can sacrifice himself, which takes more courage.
