  • It's a breath of fresh air to here someone's interest in Japan that extends beyond Japanese pop culture,Anime, and video games.I have noticed that a lot of Foreign men that move to Japan start dating and or marry a Japanese woman. Is it more common for men to settle into a life in Japan and marry than a foreign woman in Japan?

  • you seem like a nice person!

  • @connerbackusnwghs what about american porn sites? i think there is more american porn than japanese!

killing whales is crappy, yes! but starting wars is worse..

  • You like history? Interested in Japanese history from 1931-1945? Wow, that was hell of a time for the Japanese.

  • @Taxidriverdeniro

Korea bet 1931-1945 did not exist.

    Sorry mama!

  • @hungseki1 Korea? I didnt say anything about Korea. I said study JAPANESE history between 1931-1945. Alot of AMAZING things happened!

  • I'm too am a nerd and you should not be ashamed of how you are, and you should use this to your advantage in life .

End the power is within us

  • Japan is a great and nice organized country with respectful, obedient people and great precious culture. Also the foods there might be healthy and efficient?lol....Also the technological achievement advancements are good. Japanese are respectful, hardworking ethnics, cool and charming?lol......And there fashion and style are ridiculous and mysterious.....the standard of living there is very high and quite expensive useful products. Also they are interesting, peaceful and conservative?lol..^_^

  • I totally agree with you!!!

I have only seen a little anime compared to my friends.

Probably only seen more than an episode of about 4 or 5 shows and I've never read a whole manga episode. ..

Kyoto and Nara are very interesting to me. Also, the cultural aspects. For example, the cultural festivals and customary traditions. I love to tending to gardens and walking in a natural settings.

Anywaysss.... yeah. I agree with you a lot :)

  • @17700511 ugh, obvious troll is obvious

  • なるほど~

    参考になります

  • NARUHODO

  • Wow, tell me something new. You message was so original. Pathetic. If you don't like it, then don't watch it.

  • 沖縄県 only has one season 夏

I miss the change of season, but it nice to have the seasons celebrated. I like the history as well

  • Well loving is good but would it be better if u study the history and culture in ur own country like me I live in Malaysia and also interestide in Japan but sometimes I must first know about my culture rather than different cultures

  • I love flower arrangement! I have a book on it, but it's winter and flowers are scarce and expensive so I can't really take part in it hehe. Also, I love Japanese history as well. I haven't had a chance to take a Japanese history class, but I would love to. :)

  • oh, I envy you your passion and enthusiasm. i studied japanology, but I never got the fire. I try to understand and love japan, but I got very disappointed after knowing the uwaki culture fact, too many dirty shops with no moral almost everywhere and some oter things , that took my enthusiasm I had once

  • marianka1980:

Hearing why people don't like is just as interesting.

Where did you hear about "Uwaki"? ^_^

  • I think short-hair does much her

  • Some people cannot tolerate the fact that a white female loves Japan. Yes, it is called Jealousy.

  • I love world history :)

  • U just jealous coz we like Japan.lol

  • This is a racist and rude comment. While you are entitled to your opinion, I do not support the bashing of any group of people. DO NOT EVER POST ANOTHER RACIST COMMENT!

  • Please refrain from leaving racist comments. No socitety is flawless.

  • what a cool nerd chick.

  • Thanks, I think?

  • i have so much more respect for your answer than any other given. I HATE the Otaku answers that are given. Especially with anime. Most have no idea what else japan has to offer except anime and ever other dumb cookie cutter answer given. Also, it doesn't matter how much you like Japanese women, they will not like you if you are UGLY.

  • ???????

  • no drinks thats speed she took

  • It is very interesting to hear you talk so passionately about your love of Asian and Japanese culture. I only hope that people like you are seeing things with 'both' eyes.

  • Would you care to clarify that statement?

  • Hi again. I meant that in regards to any "other" culture people may immerse themselves in, in whatever country. Appreciating the good but also knowing the historical facts. Where you are just happens to be especially relevant. Yes, every nation has its past. But what Japan "wants" to portray itself as, and what the reality is, both past and present, are especially off balance. But perhaps you are already aware. I was simply responding to this particular video of yours.

  • I know that very well, I have a Masters Degree in Asian and Pacific Studies. I have very storng views about what happened in the past and what continues to happen today, but you have to realize that despite that you can still enjoy living there. No country is perfect and any country whose people think that way is gravely mistaken. If there was such a thing as Utopia, then we would all be there regardless of race or religion.

  • It is reassuring to know that you are not just another person with exclusively "mythical" ideas about where you are. A little biased perhaps, as we all tend to be in the processes of global and intercultural flux. There exsists a disproportionate number of people in the general public who cannot seem to see beyond Japan's superficial face.

  • Believe me, I can see through the veneer. However, you also have to know how to pick and choose your fights. Yet, you also have to know when to take a stand. Like I said before, there is no such thing as a perfect country, race, or religion.

  • lol...talk about an intellectual battle :P

  • So true.

  • Hey, you would be a great children's teacher.

  • 今晩は kkajapan!!

    日本語 が 六年 勉強しました。じゃ、 よんねん べんきょうして とめる。

    わかる?

omg haven't written in japanese in awhile, did i get that right?

i studied for 5 years at high school and my first year at university. I also took a japanese culture course class last year (my 1st A ever at uni yay!!)

i just love japan and am planning my next trip for nov 2009

  • こんばんは。日本語で書いてくれてありがとう。

You are lucky that you got to study it in high school. They didn't offer it at my school. I hope that you have a great time planning your next trip to Japan.

  • @kameakai Weeaboo alert!!!

  • Before I even looked at your profile, I could tell that you have been living in Japan! You speak like a person who has been speaking to Japanese people all day! I know this because I did the same thing...I don't know why, but the way you talk reminds me EXACTLY of how I used to speak when I was living in Japan...I don't know if that makes sense or if you know what I'm talking about, but after we live there for awhile, we get something different in our voice....

  • Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I am actually a bit embarrassed about it. I think I talk pretty normally, but sometimes I find myself getting stuck mid-sentence or pronouncing an English word with Japanaese pronunciation. Like the other day instead of saying life it came out raifu. AHHH!

  • ok sorry for overload, i was trying to express my love for japan, but also first explain my experiences. i went overboard, and i saw that so i stopped. i just wish i could put my videos on you tube, so im sorry for taking up so much space

  • No need to apologize. I enjoyed reading about your experiences. Feel free to write more. You went to some of my favorite places and judging from your stories, you must speak japanese pretty well. Thanks for your comments.

  • But also with my new freedom to roam at my leisure this trip i added numerous new trips such the kintai kyo in Iwakuni (south of Miyajimaguchi) Hirshima castle, ginkakuji, a surprise was sanjusangendo that i added on the last in kyoto as a spur of the moment. for anyone the goes to kyoto u must go here, its walking distance from the station.

  • We visited Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo (of course eveyone does these places). I loved it so much, that i decided to show my younger brother what i loved so much.

trip 2. November 2006 autumn (omg so beautiful) for 3 weeks.

I visited the same places as my first, but with the freedom to choose where to go. I showed my brother everything i loved the first time like Miyajima, the Hiroshima peace park, Todaiji, Kinkakuji, Ryoanji, Kiyomizu, Tokyo.

  • I won the trip through the Japanese Teachers Association in New Zealand as a student finishing high school. 5 students from NZ were chosen by writinga patragraph in Japanese about why we wanted to go to Japan and how we would use our japanese language skills in the future. After that 10 students were in the finals and we had to do a phone interview in japanese (very scary). So I was picked in the 5 yay!!

  • O M G where do I even begin!!

I love Japan (my friends and family and co-workers) say I'm totally obsessed. Ok I am lol

I have visited Japan twice. 1. January 2004 (2 weeks) in winter (i saw snow yay).

  • "Tokyo" is stifling.

    I like "Atami" than "Tokyo".

  • Atami is a nice area. One of my favorite restaurants in located on the was to Atami.

  • Hey there...I myself am a history buff so I understand what you're talking about. I have personally never had an interest in anime or manga...nothing against it, just no personal connection. I'm coming to Japan to learn about my fiancee's culture.I suppose i have a lot to see and learn in the next few years ^^

  • Yes you do have lots to see and learn. I llok forward to seeing you vlog about it.

  • Good vid. Not anime fans myself but love the history/culture.

no shame about knowing the history! I found I get more respect from some Japanese when I show I know something about Japanese history than I do when I babble out what little Japanese I know. Check out my Biwa-player vid.

However the four season thing - lots of countries have four seasons and I can't get over how often some Japanese show surprise at that fact.

  • Thanks for the comment. Regarding the 4 season comment, I grew up in the middle of California, so we didn't always get the 4 seasons and definitely not the extent of food/events connected to the changing of the seasons, so I think that is one of the reasons Japanese take such pride in the whole 4 thing. It really should not surprise them though, it goes along with the whole "uniqueness" idea.

  • I mean surprise them that other places have 4 seasons too. I don't know if it's pride or just unawareness. Many places have 4 distinct seasons.

Much of the idea of celebrating the different seasons came from old Imperial Chinese court customs. Hanami comes from the tradition of plum blossom viewing in China.

Don't get me wrong, I love Japan but I don't care overly much for the "uniqueness" mentality esp in areas where it doesn't apply. It's sometimes exploited for the wrong reasons

  • However I don't subscribe to that japan-bashing mentality that "Japan stole everything from China" trite that gets floated about on the "internets" ad naseum periodically.

  • I agree with you on many points. However, if we say that we get evil comments about being "Japan-bashers", which obviously isn't true.

  • I don't watch anime either, but I like Totoro soft toys! :D

I like Japanese traditions, history, culture, language, food! I'm trying to learn. :)

  • Oh, yes! Tonari no Totoro is a great film.

  • yay for anime!

Yes I agree, you always know so much about Japan it's amazing! You are my guru! ^_^

    Hope you are doing well!

  • You are my anime guru, definitely. Doing alright. Here for the time being. Seeing what the future brings and keeping options open either way. How are you?

  • Japanese history was my undergrad major, so it was one of the things that most attracted to me when I first got here. Going to places that I had read about years before was a trip.

Now, Japan for me, is my students and friends. They are what keep me here. The kindness and charm of the kansai area people is hard to describe. That's what keeps me here I guess. That... and the cute boys! ;-)

  • LOL! I definitely agree about the cute guys! I have only spent a bit of time in Kansai. Usually in Kyoto & Nara. Have been to Osaka and Kobe, but each only once.

  • temples are boring -.-

lol, but seriously, I like learning about the culture and the history too. Like America only has about 200 years of history (which I know by heart thanks to taking classes every year on it, lol). But Japan has over 2000 years of history!!! So much!

SO tahts fun, but after a couple temples I get bored and wanna go to a game center or a a certain land of soap <.<

  • Have you ever gone to a 茶室? You usually get some sort of 和菓子 and 抹茶. You should try it at some of the temples in Kyoto, or walking the Philosophers Path.

  • I once heard someone say, "if its old, its boring". :)) But still I like to look at temples from time to time, especially the temples in Nara. You should check Nara out sometime Sam, even a soapland patron like yourself might find it interesting, the deer hassling all the tourists and terrorising kids with food is pretty interesting in itself.

  • Right on!

  • I'm considering foing to OSaka and Kyoto for Golden week, so possibly go check that out ;)

  • Me too. I always go to Kyoto sometime during GW, if we are there at the same time we should hook up.

  • How you gonna go? Shinkansen?

Thinking about staying at the guesthouse "Jhoppers"

    No curfew and 2000yen a night ;D

  • I am still in the planning stages. What dates will you be there, we could do a Tokyo YouTubers hit Kyoto vlog.

  • It's great that you have a great interest in history. I think history it's one of the most underrated subjects by most people and they don't know what they are missing! When I was in middle school (with no friends and almost no TV) I read 2 whole books on history (loved the Greeks and the Romans: so much to learn) and since then I've been reading about everything (civil rights lately). So don't call yourself a nerd. You're doing great.

  • Great, another history buff! History is what every civilization and everything that is around us is based on. You are so right about it being underrated.

  • Thank you. You said you don't watch anime but at least let me recommend you one. It's a scifi drama called Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex. I specially recommend the second season (2nd GIG) because it deals with issues like discrimination and immigration in a futuristic setting but from what I've read this issues are currently being discussed. Since you are already there you would have a fresh perspective on things.

  • Cool! Thanks for the recommendation. That does sound interesting, I will check it out.

  • I dont really like anime very much either, except for GreatTeacherOnizuka thats hilarious. Love Nara too. and.. the best season is coming.. sakura season. :) oh and by the way some of those kimonos are amazingly expensive arent they. Asian history is really really interesting. This comment is all over the place but you brought up so many points I wanted to comment on. :)

  • Isn't it crazy how expensive some of those kimonos are? That's almost as dazzling as the kimono itself. There are some anime films I like, but anime fans would pooh-pooh it as amatuer, so I don't usually mention them. I really like Hotaru no Haka, but it makes me cry buckets of tears. Also several of the Ghibli films as well, but that is about it.

  • ehhe my wife has watched that Hotaru no Haka a couple of times too and it always makes her cry. :) I have just watched bits of it and it is very well done of course but just too sad for me.

  • It is really sad and hard to get through. I watched it in graudate school in Japanese class. Very small class, only 3 student and I was the only gal. Its great to see men cry!
