I think the 50's styles for women were fantastic. Women looked like a classy and elegant lady.
The flowing gowns, the curvy figures, the hair styles. Women were so girly and feminine.
Also to add, that these models are well over 20 years old, and not only are they truly beautiful on the outside but also on the inside. Models were well into their mid-30's and they looked helathy. Unlike today were models look like they are 16 years old, deprived of food and with a big drama attitude.
You know, once you get passed the slutty things, a lot of things from the 50s-70s are coming back in style, but with a more modern twist. As for me, I love the fashions of the 50s the best. I love the full skirts, the bathing suits ... it looked very classy without trying to hard.
If you like this style, dress that way! You can find great clothes that replicate the ones in this video for decent prices if you look for them.
Superb video!! My inspiration for my designs is the Fifties and my first five collections are very similar, but with modern twists on them. When I have the first show in maybe Feb/March 2012, I'll post a video myself and see what you think.....Long live women being feminine, elegant and classy :)
I love the clothing of the 50's; it was always so elegant and beautiful. It wasn't gaudy and immodest, it was classy. The materials lasted very well and were quality. I love that some of the aspects are coming back into fashion, especially the floral prints and dress shapes.
nice to see women back then did'nt like to show so much body, young women now a days sometimes dont wear nothing at all, they even get payed for it, back then there was a law that said that women could'nt wear skirts above the knee, why did they remove that law when we need it?
clothes were so well made back then as well, none of this cheap made in china stuff that hardly lasts, i mean there are still vintage clothes from the fities around but i heavily doubt the clothes made today will stand the test of time
Gorgeous.. I love that you can tell a man from a woman from way far away. I love these dresses, so elegant and so feminine. So glad to have found places that you can buy these clothes in and even corsets (proper ones not fashion ones). And all the tutorials for time period hair and make up here on YouTube.. its perfect!
I love the fact that the styles were meant to make a woman look sexy. it covered us from high waist to mid calf therefore hiding all the "problem areas" us women have and leaving most things to your imagination, which is sexy in its own right. I love to wear 50's dresses now. I feel so feminine when I do.
@mymarkis666 Women were "allowed" to wear pants. It wasn't even that long ago either. It was unproper, but working in the garden, horseback riding and other outdoor activities it was completely accpetable to wear shorts and pants. These are more outing day clothes and evening clothes shown. However, all pants were not low risers, no butt cracks were shown, and pants didn't need to be hiked up because they actually sat on a woman's natural waist, rather than barely above the bikini line.
@mymarkis666 I was using gardening to respresent things around the house, like many women sport sweat pants, etc. I simply think people had more class back then.
I don't remember reading in any history books about a Christian Dior gestapo rounding women up and making them work in a chain gang just because they refused to wear petticoats and cartwheel hats! LOL! Women went along with this stuff, and lets remember that this was thirty years after the flappers of the 20s when women were first "liberated".
As long as we're into history -- after ww2, the entire culture pushed women back into subserviance so that men returning from war could have the jobs and the desirable order of society would return. Women "went along with this stuff" because there was no other stuff, unless a woman was willing to be spurned and outcast -- a bad reputation was a serious circumstance which most women wanted to avoid. Uncomfortable clothing was a reminder to stay in your place.
@liz1060 You make some great points. Alot of women did feel pressure to fit in - BUT FROM OTHER WOMEN! Fashion is all about action and reaction. After WWI, women cut their hair, wore shorter skirts and used girdles to flatten their figures to look different from Edwardian/Victorian women. In the 30s, fashion became more and more feminine as a reaction to the 20s. Dior re-established the fashion cycle with The New Look after WW2. The 60s were a reaction to Dior (and was based on the 20s).
If you prefer a less superficial understanding of "action and reaction" please see The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, which addresses "the problem which has no name" and The Second Sex by Simone De Beauvoir which expands on her theory that "one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." These books represent well the circumstances prior to what you might refer to as "the second liberation" -- perhaps you can find audio editions if you don't read -- heheh :)
@liz1060 I apologize if my last post was taken to be superficial. I was merely giving you a perspective from someone who has studied fashion history for over twenty years. And as Friedan herself pointed out through own life and in her book, women's lives didn't change until women themselves decided to change them. Women CHOSE to be liberated, showed courage and fought for it; that was the awesome thing about it. Lace and petticoats can't imprison you unless your mind is already imprisoned. ;-)
True ... but I suggest that women's lives have not changed except superficially and that it is only the individual who can choose to be liberated, free from pack influence. The pack can do nothing but repeat habitual behaviors, however well justified and substantiated they claim to be -- and it takes an extreme intention to choose to be liberated -- it is not just resisiting peer pressure but an inherent need to belong and be accepted -- the mind IS the prison.
@liz1060 Absolutely! That's what makes self-esteem and knowing your mind so important. So many great women of the 20th Century had that philosophy. If you know yourself, you can define yourself and, through that, you gain the courage to live by that definition (and feel no shame in changing the definition if need be). All movements started with individuals. Most people just go along to get along, either because they're ashamed of who they really are or they don't know who they really are.
@mymarkis666 Yep, back in the fifties they were very sexist. I would not like to live in the 50s, because of all the sexism, racism, and lack of individuality, but I do love the way people dressed during that time. I like the way women dressed up until the 1970s. I think once the 70s kicked in, it all started going downhill from there.
@kipkayify I think you like the way they dress mainly because it is now a classic look. Women of the future will probably look on our current fashion and trends the same way.
Back in those days, most folks actually HAD waists. One reason why low-rise jeans were and are so popular is because one doesn't have to try to find pants to fit properly over their guts or pot bellies. As long as they can get up to the crack of your butt, viola! They fit!!!

So charming! Woman today just don't have time or the money to look that elegant anymore. They've got to get to work.

Regardless of if the styles are worn again, women these days are too lazy to do their hair the way they used to.
