And I want to make one thing clear: I LOVE Colin Firth, but I truly thing Colin is not in love with Mary. And the one who plays Dickon is such a teddy bear!!!!!
Ok, lets see: girl, if you have such a man as Dickon is, and with this appearence: seriously, Colin?!?! TF girl you have worst taste than I imagined you had.
Does anybody know if there was ever a soundtrack made for this version of The Secret Garden? I have always loved this version more than any other one I've seen (mostly because I grew up watching this one nearly every week of my childhood). I would LOVE to have the music put together on a soundtrack, but most people haven't even heard of this version :(
omg, that was colin firth? I remember this scene from watching this movie as a kid. I thought the guy playing the adult version of the kid was such a stiff, old douche. I watched this movie so many times with my siblings and cousins. We all made fun of him. All this time that was colin firth? lol!
I do not recall Dickon dying in the book. Well, I stick to the book then... Shouldn't Colin F. change his name to Dickon?! Oh no, there were people talking about that Dickon did not suvive in the 1987 version... hmpf. I adore Mr Firth... with a different name and ending... Well I can't have it all ;-)
I never heard about this movie before and, with all due respect, if Mary ends up with Colin, I don't think I will take it!!! She was sooo in love with Dickon ever since she saw him!!
@XpeanutttX it's not; incest is between mother-child father-child or siblings it is leagal to marry your cousin and still is in england and when this film is set was highly practiced, queen victoria married her cousin albert.
@HyperActiveSkittles Actually, it IS incest. Incest is a sexual relationship between members of the same family, which can mean siblings, parent/child, unce/niece, cousins, grandparent/grandchild, basically any familial combination you can think of. While it's true that marriage between cousins is legal in some countries, that doesn't make it non-incestuous.
When I was young, I remember hating that Mary for ending up with Collin, the whiny rich boy and not Dickon, who was actually cool, friends with animals and had spirit. Admit it Mary, you just wanted the castle and the title Lady.
If you watch the whole film- it expplained that they are unrelated; Mr. Lenox's father and Archibals's father were friends; so Archie saw it fit to take Mary in. (Part 2 I believe; its posted)
Mmmm young Colin Firth. He's lovely. Even though everybody knows that Mary belongs with Dickon.
To all you people who are grossed out by the cousins thing: please get some historical perspective. You can't judge historical novels by modern standards. In that time (mid 1800's) marrying your cousin was not only accepted, it was encourged. No doubt Lord Craven would have encouraged Mary and Colin to get married, because it would keep the money in the family.
@NarglexD it really shocked and stroke me too ... It would be great and more natural If she had... Dickon was representing the values that led her through the discovering, 'flourishing' and taking care of her garden... He was reminding her of something that she longed for and was fascinated by before her arrival to England. And he had an open, gentle soul; something opposite to what Colin was hurt n imprisoned by: his family n origin. Dickon was meant for her, they've been bound together...
THANK YOU for posting this! I saw this back in fifth grade (1993-94) and always remembered it because I felt kind of grossed out that they were cousins getting married. But, in Europe they do things differently I guess. :) The weird part to me now is that I am the same age Colin Firth was when he made this-27. Oh, how far he has come!!
Yes, they're cousins in this film, and get married, but yes again, in Europe it was quite normal. Even more so because of inclination to keep things in family. Maybe NOW it's not just so obvious.
@forevergreenning Actually, in this version they weren't cousins. In the book and all other movie versions yes, but in this they say at the beginning that Mary and Colin's mothers were best friends so Mr. Craven was like her godfather or something. Hallmark threw that little bit into it because they worried about complaints from viewers over having the first cousins marry, even through it was a normal practice in that time.
@forevergreenning Actually it was the 1993 version that that Mary & Collin are cousins. In this 1987 version their parents were just friends, so there was nothing weird about it.
@tjk200081 But the whole reason Mary is sent to live with the Cravens is that they are her only living family. Colin's mother is Mary's mother's sister.
@hididdleydee It was that way in the 1993 version, but not the 1987 version. In the 1993 version Colin was Mary's cousin, but they call Mr. Craven a friend of Mary's father, not her uncle.
@tjk200081 According to IMDB there are THIRTEEN versions. (There are also TWO stage musicals). All presumably based on the novel. Mary has ALWAYS been related to the Cravens. If this film decided to change it, that's silly and stupid. The story is about healing and rebirth. It doesn't need a romantic love ending to validate it. Sheesh!
@tjk200081 But the whole reason Mary is sent to live with the Cravens is that they are her only living family. Colin's mother is Mary's mother's sister.
@XFiles1993 Erm, actually cousins all over the world have married, not just Europe. It's mostly the time period being so accepting of it, not the region itself.
I watched this about once a week as a kid. I was sad that Dickon died, because I wanted her to be with him. The lonely boy with animals as friends, not the pouty, heir.
All right. I read the book for the first time yesterday, and discovered two things: (1) COLIN AND MARY ARE COUSINS. Icky for kissing. And (2) in the book they DON'T get together! So I was sad that they didn't, but after realizing they are cousins, I am a bit relieved. Sniff.
I think reading the book may have ruined the ending for me! ): I always loved that they got together in the end. ): ):
It may interest you to know that in this particular version of the movie, Colin and Mary are not related. The family had connections and Colin's grandfather and Mary's Grandfather were dear friends, so younger Mr. Craven, Colin's father, felt obliged to give the girl a home. In every version of the movie, at least a few circumstances have changed. The 70's version is the most faithful.
'Where you tend a rose, a thistle cannot grow' ... COLIN!!! When I was in Oxford, I asked you to marry me ... hey, I am in Oxford!! Thanks, forevergreening, lovely upload! xx
You don't believe it. I managed to delete ALL my vids - at once! Just marked upper little window... such a silly mistake!!!
Now I'm trying to restore most of them and to do it much better. This one was the first I placed here, and - most popular of all, can you believe it? About 40000 viewers I think. Despite it was quite bad in picture and sound (awfully out of synch).
And I want to make one thing clear: I LOVE Colin Firth, but I truly thing Colin is not in love with Mary. And the one who plays Dickon is such a teddy bear!!!!!

They ruined this sweet, innocent book. How can it end with a kissing scence. WTH, i hate the way mr director imagined about the ending.

"I wrote to you and asked you to marry me. Why didn't you give me an answer, Mary?"
"I wanted you to ask me here in our garden."
"Of course. I should have known."
Well, she could have dropped him a note saying "ask me in the garden" instead of leaving the guy hanging like that.

She should have ended up with Dickon in the end.
