According to Wikipedia, Adele performed until 1932, five years after the advent of talkies. It's surprising there's no sound film footage of her, either solo or with Fred. For that matter, I've never understood why ALL the great musical shows and revues, post 1927, weren't recorded. Had there been, now they could be digitally remastered and we'd have all those great performances on DVD and BluRay. It's a shame.
@hfelton Yes, it is a shame. Years ago, I did see Fred and Adele together on TV for an interview. I am not sure who interviewed them though. It may have been when the Life magazine pictures were taken. I have a few of the Life pictures in the video. Thank you for your thoughtful remarks.
Oh to have a movie of Adele...She owned the Broadway stage in the 20s. They did one test film, which has been lost, so all we have are stills of the most arresting performer of that age. Who else could up;stage Fred Astaire?
@GzerGreg I had found one picture of Adele kissing Fred on stage like he was her boyfriend. I did not use it because they are brother and sister. They must have been an entertaining pair. Thank you for your nice remarks.
@Shabannie After my old channel et7waage got suspended by YouTube in January, so that I had to start all over again, everything feels so new and fresh again! ;-)
@kindofblue21 Astaire and Gershwin were friends, so that is why I chose a Gershwin piece. Plus the music is very sweet and sentimental. Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
je ne savais pas que Fred avait une soeur. Merçi de me la faire découvrir,et le choix de l'amitié pour la bande son et judicieux en fois de plus bravo !
@cleret65 Yes, I decided to make this video because a lot of people probably do not know about Adele. They usually danced on stage, not in movies, until she got married. Merci beaucoup.
That was absolutely charming, but I feel a bit silly,I had never heard of Adele Astaire,I have always heard of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers though!I have a lot to learn!!Thank you for posting!
@mandydancerful Adele quit show business to get married. Adele and Fred were on stage together, not in movies. I decided that a lot of people did not remember Adele well, so that is why I made the video.
I'm having trouble with my inbox again. All the words overlap. But, thank you for the description about the video. I don't know much about Fred's early days. The photos are interesting. I think Fred is the most elegant dancer ever for a man. Thanks for share Ellen, and i love the music. ;)
I guess in those days you couldn't be Lady Cavendish AND be a Broadway Star! But Fred and Adele were great together while they lasted - and then Fred found Ginger! Thanks for the tribute.
@paulprocopolis Adele had a successful career in the theatre, and like the song, who could ask for anything more. I assume that she had rhythm. She looks happy in the pictures. Thank you for your nice comments.
@Kievest Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I plan to do a couple more videos about Fred Astaire later. I plan to do a video about George Gershwin later, but I just have not done it yet. I will continue to use Gershwin music once for background music also.
Hi Ellen, I love this video! I knew Fred had a sister, but had not seen a lot of photos of her...they were beautiful pics! The music is perfect! Thumbs up and a trillion stars! :)
clearly even as children they came from a wealthy background, to have those childhood studio posed photos taken was not cheap in those days, one can see from their attire, that mum and dad were wealthy well healed folk.55555 loved the whole show, now that's entertainment.555555.
Excellent video Ellen. My fav pic was at 4:15. This was very educational, and i didnt even know about Adele until now. Liked it very much, espec the music.
@TorontoEd7 Then I am please to introduce to to Fred Astaire's sister Adele. Thank you for your nice remarks. Yes, the picture at 4:15 is with her husband.

@PlayIt4MeAgainSam I enjoyed making this one. I have made one about Ginger Rogers already. I plan to make something about him and Cyd Charisse later. Thank you for your nice comments.
What a magnificent video Ellen!! Such wonderful photos. Rhapsody in Blue went perfectly with the images. I have always loved that piece of music, it gives me goose bumps when I listen to it. I love to watch dancers perform to that music. It is magical to see.
The Astaires were great dancers. He was always my favorite dancer of all time.
@valentinolover70 Valentino was a very good dancer too. I might use other arrangements of this beautiful music in another video later, but not anytime soon. Thank you very much for your friendly comments!
This is nice. Reminds me of getting the family photo album down and seeing all those elegantly dressed people I didn't know or thought I didn't. Sometimes, I think it would be great to go back in time, but of course, we have come a long way. I know why so many talk of the "good old days." Thanks, Ellen. This is wonderful. Wonderful Ellen! I love Rhapsody in Blue and Astaire of course. Astaire was already 33 yrs old when he made his first film. It's strange that he had this entire stage career with his sister that we can never see, except via stills. I understand that Adele was a truly great dancer as good or better than the best of his onscreen partners. There is one short piece of film which shows Fred & Adele dancing together, but it's too brief to tell us much.Anyway, thanks for the video.
@Shabannie Ellen, there is a funny bit on YouTube,on crepehanger47's channel showing Fred's appearance on What's My Line. It's great. You should check it out if you have'nt already.
Outstanding, Ellen!! The photographs and video effects are excellent. My fav pics are the ones of Fred and Adele as children. I never knew that Adele was his original dance partner, let alone that FA even had an older sister. RIB is an excellent choice for your magnificent video. GG and FA are two American classics and are perfect for each other. 5 stars. :-)
@TheLadyMalfoy This was an opportunity for me to learn about Adele Astaire too. Most of her work was on stage, not in movies, and it was all before my time. I can remember that my parents talked about Frank's sister. Adele left show business to get married. Her husband's picture is in the video. Thank you for your nice comments.
This Tribute video to Fred and Adela Astaire is so interesting. I have read a biography of Fred Astaire.I enjoyed seeing all those pictures . I like the song you chose for the talented and debonaire Fred and his very talented sister, Adele.
@ebfan41 I have read biographies about George Gershwin, and I discovered that Frank and George were friends. That is why I selected Gershwin music. I am glad that so many people are still interested in Fred Astaire's career.
