The Washington DC City Council passed a law April 1, 2008 that increases the penalties for assaults on bus operators and station managers in D.C. by 50%. The law also requires that notice of the law be posted on buses and in the Metro stations. This followed a dramatic increase in assaults on transit workers that totalled 85 in 2007.

If its the same incident I'm thinking of, I believe it occurred on a P-6 bus on or around 3rd & T Sts. NE. The individual was identified through the videotape, prosecuted and sentenced (I think he received 2 years-- but only did 60 days (or possibly less) as the rest was suspended.
