Sometimes they would play objects that weren't musical instruments. Steve would interview them beforehand, and they would say things like, "I play water" or "I play meat."
Oh Yes, PLEASE...someone please upload that great laughing segment where Steve is a playing a reporter and he says something that really tickles his funny bone and then he just can't stop laughing...
...that's Pat Harrington as the cookie nut-job portraying that wanna-be Lawrence Welk "don't touch me, are you union" fella...now isn't that the funniest get-up since that hard-working father he was on "One Day At A Time" TV show of the late 1970's ??
I've read, I think it was in one of Mr. Allen's books, that in that classic bit, Allen caught a glimpse of himself in the monitor, and found the sight of his straight hair hanging down around his face under his hat a hoot. It struck, as you say, his funnybone.
Louie Nye's 'instrument' was always something like water, or meat, or whatever. :>)
Sid Caesar's 'Progress Hornsby' was another hilarious bit. A hipster, jive talkin' jazz musician, Hornby's major 'opus' was the "National Anthem of the Dark Side of the Moon". :>)
This is almost pretty funny

Thanks for posting the description of the band members -- I would not have figured it out without it, even though I know all the actors.
