  • I bought mine out of the back of a car in DC from a friend of an ex-bandmate for $25 in 1989. I had it for about 3 years and it disappeared in a move. Years later when I went looking for another one, they were going for about $7-800 minimum. It was so out of electronic alignment that I could just turn it on and listen to it spontaneously drift from one sound to another without touching the keys bit maybe once! Got some great recordings out of it too!

  • Hi, I'm from mexico and buy the same keyboard (but not the srm) in just 100 pesos (about 10 dollars), is a wonder this synthesizer, the ring sounds have bass sounds dirty and very rude, I certainly I call wildcat

  • Always love Jambo's video. I'm apparently getting my SRM back from the tech tomorrow with VCO1 working again, keyboard cleaned, everything else fixed and a filter switch mod done for type and slope. It's a good thing they're worth a lot of money now (especially the SSM2040 SRMs which mine is) because the bill is apparently going to be about 1000 US. Thankfully only paid 500 USD for it about 3 years ago "working perfectly" on Ebay. But I'm so excited to have my baby back tomorrow. Finally.

  • @iamawildcat usually around like 2000

  • @SHIZNITBOOYA

nah. more like $1200 to $1600.

  • wij houden van oranje?

  • I have a white face Odyssey and the modulation abilitlies on it don't come close to the Cat. You can blend waveforms for each vco on the Cat, where as you have to choose one waveform for each vco on the Odyssey. You can also add a sub oscillator for each vco and have vco1 modulate vco2 and have vco2 modulate vco1. All of which you cannot do with an Odyssey. The ONLY drawback is that there is no cv/gate or clock inputs rendering the Cat nearly useless in a midi studio, unless retrofitted.

  • @translinguistic

Actually it seems only the earliest models of the Cat omitted gate and CV inputs. Since this particular unit is a later revision with the SSM filter it does in fact offer this. There is still a small drawback however as both connections are only available through a stereo jack, so this must be split with an adapter when using it with practically anything else. I'm pretty sure it conforms to the 1V/octave standard too.

  • @OriginalJambo

Wow i had no idea. I've read that they come with cv/gate but every Cat photo i've ever seen, including SRMs, had no inputs. I've seen that they have a coulple pedal inputs but never seen cv/inputs. I've also read that Kenton retrofits Cats with MIDI or cv inputs regularly, so i naturally thougtht that no Cats had cv or clock. In fact, there is an SRM on ebay right now with no cv's. Thanks for the info, now i'm definately thinking of adding a Cat to the family!

  • @translinguistic

Maybe I'm just really lucky then! I know a guy who owns a really early model with the original discreet filter and I'm sure that didn't have CV either.

However what you should be aware of is that it's not clearly labelled as such - on the back panel it's known as "Series Patch" with "To Slave" and "From Master" being the CV output and input, respectively. As I said before both are stereo jack sockets.

    Here's a picture: h t p//img51.imageshack.us/img51/9255/octavecatcv.jpg

  • @OriginalJambo

Oh okay, now that makes a little more sense. I thought only the SRMII's came with cv inputs. So how do you split it? With a double jack adapter and plug into only one? Never heard or had to do that before. I'm interested in a Cat and this is great info.

  • @translinguistic

Ah, the SRM II actually had some sort of digital keyboard output as well as CV/gate. Maybe that's what you are thinking of?

As for my SRM, a stereo to 2 x mono 1/4 inch adapter works fine with a Kenton MIDI/CV box. Only thing is I can't remember what channel is what although I've definitely used it sucessfully.

I've also never came across a synth that doesn't have separate sockets for CV and gate. I guess the Cat is just a bit of an oddball - in more ways than one I guess!

  • Wilhelmus?

  • I seriously have to clean up after hearing such a kick ass sound @ 1:07. I'm going to have to try that on my Odyssey! Maybe I'll post a video response!

  • Wow, this only cost you £350? Absolute bargain! Absolutely wonderful sounding synth, and from what I can tell from googling, massively overlooked!

  • such a lovely farting blurping sound , this is an excellent synth for industrial type sounds, fad gadget used it a lot

  • Hi, could you make a video demonstrating the Glide feature, I want to hear if its as good as the portamento on my SH-1000

  • This thing has a wider range of sounds than I expected. Nice video.

  • Thanks for the kind words!

  • These are such amazing noisemakers, we use the one we have for ultra high noise frequencies, they shred! Unfortunately ours is a bit touchy to keep in tune, do you have this issue?

  • I think they all have that problem.

  • Do cats luuuuueevvvee yuuoooo Playin'

  • I have 6. No complaints so far. :)

  • lovely analog sounds- id does have a minimoog quality to it...

  • atari 2600 sounds as well as nes

  • Reminds me of the sound of my realistic(moog)MG-1.

    Very good sounding synth!

  • way better than that radio shack moog though!!

  • Piano lessons for what's essentially a mono synth?

If you are playing it like a piano then you've really missed the point.

  • point taken maybe just stay off the special brew!

  • music lesson are never a bad thing no matter what your playing

  • Sometimes they're bad, because you start doing technical things that people doesn't understand.

I produce electronic music, and all the people prefer when I do something simple.

  • @ihaveaverybadcold

True, but what exactly were you expecting? A concerto? On a 37 key mono synth?

  • @OriginalJambo dang ....um that was two years ago....im sure i was responding to someone.... i dont know...i wasnt talkin about your playing....i dont think so anyways ....sorry if it sounded that way....

  • @ihaveaverybadcold

Don't worry about it - forgot it's been two years ago since I uploaded this. Time flies!

  • no matter what theres always peeps that just dont have a clue

  • I want one! £350 isnt much for it either, to bad there arent many for sale. Not in Sweden any ways...

  • The one you see here cost £350 which is probably about average - maybe slightly on the high side? It's hard to tell as you don't see them for sale very often.

Put it this way, it'll not cost much more than a lowly SH-101 in the scheme of things and certainly not as much as an MS-20 or Pro-One! Probably costs the same as a Yamamha CS-15 in most cases I'd say.

  • Is it for sale??? :-)

  • Haha, not a chance man. Good try though. :)

Let me just say that it took me about 3 months to sort out this transaction (loads of problems) and when I finally got it needed a calibration and the knobs were glued on!

So I had to have them destroyed and fitted some new ones. It took a lot of time and effort to get this beast so it's a keeper. :)

  • Reposted at CatSynth (you'll have to google the address yourself)

Nice demo, gives me some ideas to try on my non-SRM CAT.

  • well worth the wait, nice one.
