She will tear up shingles, siding, flashing, etc. in order to gain entry into the house. Once inside they will cause a further mess by defecating and tearing up insulation and wall boarding. Scat may also carry round worms, a parasite that can be transferred to humans.

I like how they feel for the food while keeping an eye on the human! I like raccoons, but they can be such pests. They frequent our pond and make meals of our fish.
We finally found that powdered coyote urine (called Shake Away, I think) works to keep them back.

if you want respect wolfy you are going to have to start behaving that way - your NEIGHBORS are the ones at fault, not the raccoons. they shouldn't be allowing their cats to run wild anyway or they run the risk of a number of problems - everything from being prey to wild animals or those people behind the wheel of automobiles to disease. i know people with show dogs that have them secure outside with cougar proof fencing all around. your neighbors ought to take responsibility - live n let live

No, I'm not being a troll, and I don't appreciate being made out to be one. The whole point of my response to your original comment wasn't about whether or not my neighbors were being ignorant or at fault. It was that just because you may not have seen raccoons behaving a certain way where you are, doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

@inbetweentics By stories I don't mean urban legends. By stories I mean my neighbors telling me "Hey, keep your cat inside for a few days. A raccoon was just chasing mine the other day. wolfywox you're 18 and it shows. while yes, raccoons will go through your trash if you don't know how to raccoon proof it, they do not go around attacking people and their pets and that rabies scare is so outdated. very few raccoons ever have rabies. you probably are carrying more germs in your mouth. there are plenty of people involved in wildlife rehabbing from raptors of all kinds to raccoons - rabies is one of the least you have to worry about, however, people and wildlife can coexist.

@casemods If they come for food, they either, already learned to go to house to get food or they don't have any choice because the suburb has expanded into their territory. Just like canis lupus, procyon lotor will branch. The one that are less digressive toward human will access the rich food from the human. This will select the most friendly and the specie will become more tame year after year. At some point we will be able to take them home and breed procyon domesticus.

People often say they feed wild animals out of kindness but all but the ignorant know it is harmful to the animals I suspect people who must know this really do it for their own entertainment or they maybe lonely and think of them as pets. Educate yourself.
