  • I like how he gets all muddy after pulling it out the water.

  • @hicohornet Yeah, I bet he's not too smart! :)

  • What state do you do your trapping in?

  • Were do you do your trapping at? Is it a lake, reservoir, or river.

  • @jakob10102 Typically lakes. Mouths of creeks, around boat docks, in shallow coves all all good spots.

  • @ttenni Thank you for sharing your bait trapping tips and experience with me.

  • Were did you get your trap? Did you have to buy it or did you make it?

  • @jakob10102 I build mine out of 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth wire or 1/2" x 1" welded wire. It's getting harder to find a hardware or farm supply store that will cut and sell welded wire by the foot. Full 100' rolls are very pricey. You can find the hardware cloth wire at Lowes and Home Depots, etc. I use j-clips to connect the joints. There can usually be purchased at most farm supply stores.

  • @ttenni Can you make a video on building these traps? How much is the general cost to build or buy one?

  • @jakob10102 You're probably looking at $35 for wire. J-clips pliers with clips might set you back $15. Someplace like a "Tractor Supply" or an SFA Farmers's Coop type store or feed store would have the J-clips. And yes, I need to do a video showing how to built one of these traps. I've had multiple requests.

  • @ttenni Thank you for your reply. Do you bait your traps, and what kind of fish do you catch in your traps?

  • @jakob10102 I use equal parts dry dog food and moist, canned dog food. I mix them in a zip-lock bag about 30 minutes before baiting my traps. The dry dog food soaks up a lot of the moisture, flavor, and scent of the canned food and releases it slowly once in the water. Moist dog food alone can wash out of the trap quickly, especially in a current. Dry dog food along doesn't put out as much scent. I catch mostly small bream species or wild shiners.

  • What farm supply store do you go to?

  • make the line orange

  • @austin96ify Why would I want to use orange line? Black, tarred nylon is stealthy. A person can be right on top of it and hardly notice it. Orange line would stand out like a sore thumb and give away the trap's position to anybody happening by. Good way to not have a trap when you come back to check it. People will steal anything they find. Out of sight, out of mind. They can't steal what they don't know is there!

  • You are one lucky bastard!

I wish I had somewhere like that to fish.

    Keep up the good work

    Cheers

  • you should really set it up so that trap's top is an inch or so above the surface incase you catch anymore turtles. This way they could keep themselves alive until you come and let them out. I know you probably don't think to much of them but i love turtles and they do a lot for the echosystem. Please at least think about my suggestion or some other way. great video other then the dead turtle. Thanks for posting.

  • @MrCoryjohnson1 Excellent idea!!! I bear the turtles no ill will. However, the sad truth is that if I left bait traps out with the top exposed, I would very quickly have no bait traps. People would steel them. That's the first and only turtle I've caught in years of bait trapping, so it's not a significant problem. Fortunately, I do most of my bait trapping in a private pond that is full of bream, but at present has no turtles. Thanks for sharing your idea.

  • @ttenni Thanks for the reply. There must be some turtles in there if that little guy is around thought. Maby cover the top with lily pads or somthing to camoflage it from people ~shrugs~. But i'm very glad to hear it's the first one you've cought and hopefully the last. have fun :)

  • ur wife is gonna kill u for getting ur pants dirty

  • @HiWay69s She'll get over it!

  • Nice trap. I saw them on the internet and they seemed a bit pricey, ecspeccially with shipping and handling. But it looks like its worth the investment. Are those entry doors big enough for bream, croaker, and maybe some pinfish?

  • @Trojanballer54 In my state, bait traps can have no larger opening than 1'" x 2". Bream larger than 4" long must be "pole caught" rather than "trap caught" to be legal as live bait. Traps of this sort can easily be modified for whatever size opening you want - just know what's allowed in your state. The basic principle of the trap, if scaled up, will work on pretty much any fish species. Shipping these traps mail order is VERY pricey. Building your own is by far your best bet.

  • @ttenni Well in North Carolina, even if its a federal law, our marine fisheries doesnt care too much over trap size. As long as you have the correct Recreational License to use commercial trapping equipment, they won't crackdown on your gear. I know this, because after an agent checked my license he complimented me on a HUGE trap I used for croaker.

Wow, you built that?! Anyway I can get instructions or blueprints. I've made lil minnow traps but nothing so elaborate.

  • that motor pushes your canoe nicely

  • Yes, it does. It's a 50-lb thrust Minkota. According to my GPS, it'll do about 4.5 mph on a fresh battery. It's all I need for the kind of backwater sloughs and bayous I like to fish.

  • @ttenni is that a trolling motor

  • @TheIcoolable Yes, a 50-lb thrust Minkota.

  • Where can you buy these kind of traps and how much.

  • I built my own out of 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth wire. There's a guy or two that sell similar traps on eBay, but you can probably build your own a lot cheaper, especially after you factor in postage. You hardly see anything like them in retail stores, although Academy Sports used to sell a black vinyl coated trap of similar design for around $40. Haven't seen one in their stores in over a year or so, however.

  • wat do u use for bait

  • See response to comment below, or try reading the video description.

  • what do u use as bait for the brem and minnows

  • As stated in the video's description, I put a mixture of canned tuna cat food and dry dog food in the trap to attract the bream and minnows.

  • what dou put 4 bait in there

  • Read video description.

  • where do you buy those traps or do you make them help please

  • I built mine out of 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth (wire). You can buy such wire at farm supply stores by the foot.

  • I love the point of view and the way this video was shot. However the wind noise on the mic is a bit annoying.

  • I'm going to try putting a piece of cotton cloth over the mic hole with hopes it will shield the wind noise, yet let voice through.

  • I switch to an external mic shielded by a piece of sponge from a dollar store. The external mic gives you more flexibility for locating the mic out of the wind and still get that great angle.

  • My present camera has no external mic jack. :( Maybe Santa will bring me a cool video camera for Christmas!

  • Nice trap

  • Thanks!

  • 5*s

  • Nice crab trap. I shoulda thought about that along time ago. Didn't even know you had vids!!! I usually use a cast net or catch em on rod. Great vid. Thanks for drawing my atention to it.

    5*s

  • You can put one out and check it as often as you like. This one was out most of one day. I fished several days this week and caught mostly gar. Catfish didn't seem to be biting, I suppose due to the excessive heat we've had recently. Kids were catching a lot of bream around the boat docks.

  • how long do you let your trap set? have you been catching any catfish lately?
