  • Actually... Billie Holiday does this best. No one like Billie.

  • Mya did great. What the hell are you people talking about? Relax

  • I like it

  • I like Mya she has flow and energy and puts so much strength into the song.

  • I dont like this

  • This is a nice twist...I like what she did with it!!!

  • @Sunshine24co2003 Although I still love Lena's version the most ; )

  • The original version is a lot better

  • This is one of those songs you really cant badly interpret...because it just that good

  • i think she looks more like lena horne then alicia key's does...honestly. all three are beautiful though!:)

  • Every new singer wants to modernize an already perfect song! They want to put more vocal ranges in it when they don't realize they are changing some of the best music ever made! People these days don't know what real music is.

  • @troopcom She is just doing a tribute her

  • @troopcom when u cover it u do it the way u want

  • i never knew why lena horne got all the credit for this tune, i guess it was because of the film? but it was written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler and originally sung by Ethel Waters, and THAT is a recording to hear. so painful and gloomy

  • Good job Mya.

  • Its OK , but it doesn't tough Lena Horne's stormy weather (1943) when music was music. It was classy and elegant. PERIOD

  • SING IT MYA!!!

  • she added a jazzy flow with her voice

  • mya has a beautiful voice and she did a great adaptation of this song, she's not lena horne so the way she sings it isn't supposed to sound just like the way lena horne sang it, if she had sang it just like lena horne people would've been complaining she's tryna mock lena horne, there's no pleasing some people no matter what you do, so quit whining and just enjoy mya's performance of this, if you don't like don't watch

  • Mya made it very sexy and bluesy but I get that she was apparently trying to make it her own while making a tribute to Lena. If they wanted a more crisp and pure voice to get the job done they should've gotten Janelle Monae.(for those who don't know her check out her song Cindi)

  • She tore this song up!! Good Job! RIP Lena Horne

  • people are such idiots wasnt an immitation it was a tribute she wasnt trying to sale the its already been done many times over it was done happy and with giddy personality for a reason ...maybe because it was a celebration of an legend and her iconic version of the song and ability... i felt it was respectful and well done ..DONT HATE ON TRULY BEAUTIFUL THINGS ALL YOUR LIFE PEOPLE SHEESH

  • I thought Mya did well, but Ms. Horne's performances carry more emotional resonance. I feel like Ms. Horne's talent not only as a singer but as an actress truly informed her iconic original performance. Mya's a great singer, but I feel like she could have done more to express the longing and heartache of the song, something a great actress like Ms. Horne could truly communicate.

  • She was trying to sing with expression. I think she did a nice job, just nervous. Her performance is worthy. Many singers of today do not have the vocal range to sing this song "straight" and "crisp." They think "coloring" the song will make up the "gap." Alicia Keys would have "nailed" this song.

  • @paismoi Chante Moore would have "nailed" it too. ;)

  • @paismoi Alicia can barely sing on key. She wouldn't have nailed anything.

  • @Chimier It always thrills me when someone else is aware of this.

  • This was the best to expect from Mya. I like the idea of it, but there's a bit too many runs in it for me to enjoy. A valiant effort. I would have liked another singer to sing it though, I don't think Mya has the voice. Plus, I mean, it IS Lena Horne and all.

  • @shamidkpzd She's lacking in the emotional depth as well. I'm all for changing things up a little, I mean she couldn't possibly imitate Lena (at least not successfully) and she shouldn't try. But it's a little too sexed up for my taste. The name of the song is called Stormy Weather for goodness sake! This was generic and boring and didn't do Lena or Mya any justice.

  • Oh dear, I guess Mya did the best she could do with her limited vocal range, very limited vocal range......

  • She didn't do the performance any justice, but she was beautiful in the performance which is easier for women of color to be these days than back in Ms. Hornes time. The ORIGINAL performance from which Ms. Horne blessed the world with CANNOT be duplicated.

  • OMG...no, just no...

  • she sucks. whitney houston does a way better job, even in 2010. she sang 2 min of it during euro concerts.

  • listen to that beautiful auto tune...mmm so soothing

  • Very nice Mya, and what a fine band you have behind you. Beautiful!

  • THIS VIDEO IS NOT IN SYNC.

  • This is the best I've ever heard Mya sing.

  • Chante moore's is better..

  • Its just a tribute, you guys act like she need to BE lena. Theres no other Mya and no other Lena R.I.P Lena

  • great performance Mya!!! that's my girl!!!

  • It's good but she's no lena....not to be disresectful.

  • I guess all I wanted to say is that no one was as elegant as Lena Horne singing this, but in these trashy times I suppose elegance doesn't sell.

RIP Ms Horne, they don't make them like her anymore :(

  • I have nothing against an updated version of any classic. What I don't like is the fact that, since this is a sad song, it should be sung to convey that emotion instead she smiles like "oohhh am I sexy or what?". You have the Pussycat Dolls for that. And all that wailing... What's wrong with this new generation of singers? Can't they sing without waling?

Credit to Mya though, at least she had the good taste not to yell at the top of her lungs like Beyoncé ruining "At last".

  • @Xiroi87

AMEN! To my dismay I discovered a version of "I Loves You Porgy" by Christina Aguilera. Needless to say it was a howling, trilling, octave spanning, self-indulgent mess. No elegance, emotion or interpretation. R.I.P. Lena, with my generations taste in music I'll sure miss you.

  • nice try, but i don't think so

  • mya's version of this song was great, she did a good job singing this song, she has a beautiful voice, i think mrs lena horne would be proud

  • thank you Mya, and RIP Ms Horne

  • Personally, I don't think I mind the new arrangement or the R&B take on the song, but the vocal performance is just bad. She doesn't even know the MELODY.

  • In a word, Ick. Does nothing to distinguish herself over the plethora of wanna be girl R&B singers that clog the pages of youtube.

  • Mya does this song beautifully.

  • stop hatin on Mya, she is a legend in her own..

  • i agree with u mrfraboy

  • @datbaby1990: Well Said!!!

  • Sometimes it makes me wonder if these young artists even know what they're singing about. I mean, they take a classic, like this one, and sing it in their own style and use a bit of "sex appeal" to it, but they have NO idea what the song is about. Too much sex is involved in today's music. A song is supposed to have MEANING. Stormy Weather expresses PURE and TRUE emotion and Lena Horne did JUST that when she sang it. She may be imitated, but she'll NEVER be duplicated! Enough said! :)

  • @datbaby1990 I don't think she want to duplicated her or even so... i think what Mya wants it's young people like us appreciates the legacy made by Lena Horne and many other. Thanks to performance like this one, with new artist, believed or not, younger people get in touch with this kind of past.

  • @datbaby1990

    Best comment here. Period.

  • im 17 and i too prefer lena horne. so much more emotion, so much skill with her voice and passion. she screws it up because she doesnt know how to sing a song without twisting it beyond recognition. ick.

  • Im 19 and i prefer Lena horne version better. There was more true emotion in hers. Not like a sex appeal thing but true love type feeling. I love this song.

  • hey i'm a "new-timer" and i still prefer lena horne'd better. she changed alot of notes. i like the choir version too

  • Oh & say something besides "hot" cause if that is what you judge "music" by you're a moron. You're judging the SONG not the person's BODY.

  • And also the singer Mya lasted all of some years before she was dominated by other pop idols. All I can remember is her nasty music from the 90s when I was younger. She sounds like everyone else. There is nothing unique about her at all and that is why the entertainment business has swallowed her.

  • this is really, really BAD. and @MrFraboy - I'm 21 years old and I think this is shit and not playful, sexy or MODERN in any way shape or form. And if this is what you consider "modern" and "sexy" you need to have your ears examined and maybe try on a hearing aid. This is AWFUL. The singers these days can't sing one straight line without trilling and caterwauling and no one should attempt this song if they aren't willing to deal with the criticism. Can't touch Ms. Horne.

  • i dont know what was so bad about this performance

    she sounded very well..

  • @d7vinegar yea they trippin

  • Haters! ... Calm Down. Let me see ya perform this. There's a reason why she was picked.

  • @kenanat she was picked because shes hot and shes famous, not because she can sing great music and sing it well.

  • @xxWayoftheSunxx Well how will you know that they picked her cause she's how & famous they could've picked anyone else that was hot & famous. I respect your opinion nonetheless. I just feel that she put her own twist & didn't imitate Lena Horne. Like in her version of Man in my life from MJ's Lady in my life. She has her own version & sound.

  • Hot*

  • For me is a FANTASTIC version!HOT!Good blues yhea!

  • Horrible. Lena is best.

  • I like this performance. She really jazzed it up, but if you listen to the music and the paino, she was supposed to.

  • Ok... What's bad about this? Sure she shouldn't have smiled, but... Why does that matter?

  • ONLY MISS LENA HERSELF was able to do and meant to do this song any justice. This was a struggling attempt and I hope ms horne wasnt in the audience at the time. I also hope that the performer issued a heartfelt explanation as to why the song was done like that. Good effort tho.

  • Horrible.......Just Horrible....She just fucked up a classic and I'm ticked off.........

  • Check out Ella Fitzgerald's version of that song. It gives you an idea what a talented singer can do with it. Mya has no voice of her own. If she does have one, I have yet to hear it.

  • @jst1998 I think young popartists like her are unable to understand that in singing, less is sometimes a LOT more. And too much usually just means tacky.

  • amazing ☆☆☆☆☆Beautiful !!!!!

  • I'd like to hear Cristina Aguilera do a version of this song. Or has she already done one ?

  • I'm sorry, I do like Mya, but not this performance. Not at all...

  • Good job Mya.

  • i think she did a really gud job

  • Comment removed

  • It's always difficult to judge an interpreation of a classic song like this. But Mya does her version, playfull, sexy and modern. She does it very well. But hard for the oldtiomers to understand, I'm sure.

  • This clearly wasn't Mya's song, but she didn't do horrible...what most people dont know is that jazz is not easy to sing

  • This performance pretty much sucks. Lena desereves more respect than this

  • Agreed!

  • Mya is actually not built to do songs like this her voice is not that precious and powerful she good at all her r'n'b songs jazz is more grand and only legends can sing songs so powerful

  • Technically amazing, but she just doen't sound 'sad' to me. Seems to me that modern singers just don't understand the power of 'understatement'. You don't have to bludgeon a song to death to get your message across, even on stage. Give me Lady Day any time..

  • I think Mya is too young to get the emotion that goes along with this song. Of course she could have listened to the lyrids. There's no smiling during Stormy Weather.

  • She's just paying tribute to a legend why would you hate on her for that? If you don't like it then don't watch it.

  • if you take away the bg music.. it would def be interesting.. i like this performance a lot.

  • You should try to sing the song yourself and see if you can sing like anyone of these women, in this case Mya, then if you can sing like that you can judge her singing, she is a very good singer, you people are such haters, There are bigger more important things things to hate on than a singer. By the way regardless of what you say she's making MONEY!!

  • if she's such a good singer she should just respect the song... this is the mariah carey rape version of a great standard

  • Im am a singer myself and I can say that Mya's performance was very good.

  • i like it alot

  • Jeezes... What has she done with this song? It's not jazz anymore, just popped up crap. Sorry, hon! If you're gonna sing these kinda songs, you'll have to sing it cleaner!

  • way too much vibrato and silly ornaments... this song needs a clean, pure performance

  • I totally agree!

  • @UnderTheBamboooTree you clearly have not listenned to either version

  • @UnderTheBamboooTree the scourge of modern pop singers, the vibrato ornaments or whatever you called them where their singing dances around the note they were actually supposed to hit. HOLD A DAMN NOTE. Female singers in particular seem to abuse those the most. Maybe a security blanket for pitch problems?

  • @UnderTheBamboooTree......... Its only your opinion, with all respect, you aren't an expert. All you have is your personal taste and ideas 'about this song. Both are superb performances for me, even if I am a big fan all my life of Lena Horne., By the way, "silly ornaments" is a silly way to describe Mya's version of this song.

  • MYA is a 10 2 thumbs up!!

  • Alright impressive for mya way to go

  • You go Mya!:)

  • she was excellent...this is so her style!

  • what pple fail to realize, mya has never had a very strong voice, she can sing, but it not a powerhouse, voice, you know what i mean

  • i kno exactly what you mean!

  • I think this performance was good. Mya has a great tone for jazz, and you can tell she has an ear for the idiom. The arrangement is also a great suit for Mya, even though in my opinion the tempo was a bit rushed. It doesn't bring out the same emotion that Lena Horne does, but honestly...honestly...who was expecting it too? Lena peaked when the popular idiom was jazz, and Mya's in a different era of popular music, and the crossing of this era and Lena's is the purpose of the performance.

  • I'd understand if it were an utter disaster of a performance, but it isn't. People just want to be harsh on it for the exercise. People need to call it for what it is, which is a decent performance.

  • i def agree wit you on her having an ear for tis idiom. She definitely has the voice for this type of music and should continue to sing this genre as much as she can! I think she did excellent! anywayz thanks for the comment yo!

  • This wasnt jazz at all.. apart from the instrumental part.. MAYBE! this was a POP version from a great song..

  • I'm kind of upset that she ruined such a classic standard. She should have left it alone. So dissapointed...

  • Awful.. A masterpiece of writing such as this should be showcased as it was written. It was never, ever meant to be performed like this. Far, far too many modern singers, mostly female, feel it necessary to display their "talent" of cramming as many notes as they possibly can into each line. It's quite pathetic really, and not at all original any more. When this style of singing ceases to be fashionable, singers may then be forced to sing these beautiful songs as they were written. Can't wait !

  • WELL DONE!! Greeeat performance! Love her vocals...

  • She is actually quite flawless.

She no Lena or Etta. . . .But has noone ever heard the big band arrangements for this song?

It's supposed to be a really big and loud song in terms of band. . .And the singer is supposed to be mellow and a tad bittersweet.

And for cryin' out loud stop not all singers need to be like reality show contestants belting and screaming and doing big finales.

And Mya is amazing no matter what.

  • It wouldnt be so bad if she was to tone down the oversinging that all the female singers do and if she dint sing it so happy. It is a blues song not a pop song. It needed a lot more soul. Other than that, her voice is fine. She needs singing lessons to interpret songs better. but most of them nowadays do.

  • You guys are wrong! I love this version of the song, and frankly in my opinion this is Mya at her best, I do wish the video quality was better...I gotta say you have to search for Lena Horne on Johnny Carson-it will blow you away...judy garland's version is also heartwrenching...this song has inspired me to potentially work on a remake of the classic!!!

  • Everyone hating on Mya she is talented I believe she makes this her own just like Beyonce makes at last her own, she sung it nothing like Etta so whats the problem? I forget she seems to do no wrong.

  • booooooooo you cant even tell that this was an old song

  • she does this song NOOOOO justice!!!! these young popcorn singers always messing up true legends!!!

  • Melisma is a bit over the top.

  • OMG

    it's pretty OK.

but if you compare her with Lena Horne you have to say, it ist completely... BORING. there is no soul in it, no 100years old blues, dark dark voice with this "old magic".

this girl is trying her best, but she is only one of "the millions of normal people".

  • God, I hate her melisma and the whorish breath/groan she does at the ends of lines. It cheapens a song sung by so many classy women.

  • Why is she moaning through the song? lol

  • Only Mya could of sang this song like this thats real talent bigs ups

  • i don't really like the way her voice sounds on this song. she's a decent singer, but i think that someone else should have sang this.

  • you think if a singer don't belt and scream and shit, they're not a singer. Not everyone like all that sit.

  • i dont know why people is hating this is nice, mya is one of the best no doubt and this song fits her a great deal, mya can sing her ass offf!!! omg

  • she sounds ok

  • you guys are gon teach this girl how to sing??

    mah people...please

  • In the verses.... she realizes there's more than one note, right?

  • Ew, she totally ruined the song...

  • Agreed. Just destroyed it.

  • I didn't know Mya was so versatile. She really did a great job. I bet Lena Horne was very proud of this tribute to her greatness. She made the song sexier than it needed to e but Lena herself would do the same thing in live performances.

  • Mya did a good job here, that go to show that she can change up her voice to make any song her own.

Mya did a really good job here.

Mya is hot look out 4her she got some hot stuff on the way.

    Mya did good here.

  • uuugh this is horrible

she doesnt need to do this anymore

lena horne kills it in the movie

    uugh i this disgust me

    STOP!!!!

  • ikecot3rd Since when does one have to be in the industry to have a view? Since when is it O.K. to ram your opinion down the throat of one who values their own as highly? Music always sells good or bad. That's historic. It doesn't mean one view is right and the other wrong. My view? A sympathecially written piece which really does not benefit in any way by being subjected to the vocal acrobatics that so many singers seem to feel compulsory these days. In the industry heh? Hmmm. No sugar in mine!

  • Maybe I am being critiCLE of her performance but hOT the hell am I supposed to know what I'm talking about. I'm just an outsider looking in!

You don't need to "do this for a living" to have an opinion; maybe Billy Holiday's version sounds like "MaRRy had a little lamb", but BillIE Holiday's version is fragile and delicate with incredibly timed riFFs. Absolute classic.

Maybe you should brush up on basic musical terms/figures before criticizing people for not "understanding" music.

  • bull shit

  • listen to lena horne's and they say with complete honesty that she does that version justice.

her voice is a little out of control on the vibratos and riffs. way too decorated

  • listen to what you are saying? your trying to compare her to a legend, she is singing a damn song for crying out loud. i think she did a verygood job because that is usually not the kind of music she sings. the fact that she pulled it off should get her some props. lena horne was the queen of her era. this young lady is paying homage to lena by doing this song and we have all these so-called music critics in here. how many rifs does lena use in the song. exactly, none they didnt sing like that

  • Que voz tan linda, ademas ella tambien es muy bella.

  • Oh my GOD. Simply awful.

  • what the hell is wrong with your hearing

  • nothing's wrong with his hearing he's right

    she did it terrible

i mean have you heard the lena horne version much much better

  • first off im in the music industry and how the hell do you expect this young lady to sound like lena horne, how old is she? exactly my point, lena horne is the one and only, mya is doing her own version and i think she did an admirable job. stick with your day job. i do this for a living. because if you were a talent scout and your boss found out you passed up such talent because she didnt sound like lena horne, you would be looking for another job. and who are you this persons spokesman?

  • I don't like it.

  • jejeje, son tus gustos

  • aimeepoodle and lemonjeloo sound like two old people sitting in a nursing home trying to be criticle of someones performance. this younglady is a songstress froma different era, how the hell do you expect her to sound like a legend in lena horne? she is doing like mya should, not like lena who is 0 years old. you so-called critics should stick to your day jobs

  • No, they don't.

It's their own personal opinion on the way it was sang. I personally didn't like it either, but I'm sure she's a good singer.

And you call people "so-called critics" and tell them to "stick to your day job" way too much for it to have any meaning.

  • All AimeePoodle said was she didn't like it. She didn't criticize Mya's performance, and she wasn't saying anything bad about Mya as a performer.

You do what for a living exactly? Verbally attack people who disagree with you? I don't think so.

So why don't you go ahead, take a page out of your own book; stick to YOUR day job,

  • Excellent and Sultry performance.

  • Very fine performance. She definitely did this song and Lena Horne justice.

  • wow, didnt know Mya sang like this, its different, she sounds good

  • I understand what Chayila0427 is saying but you still have to remember that when Lena did this song her voice was very light and feathery as well. I just wish Mya would have left that 1 run alone and really spread her range throughout the song, i felt that her voice would have been amazing on this song if she would have ventured outside of her comfort zone just a little. Overall i give this a 3 out of 5 stars....

  • Is this Minnie Rippertons' daughter Mya?

  • NO SHE ISNT

  • she on SNL

  • no. you're thinking mya rudolph... this is mya harrison with 3 platinum albums ;)

  • actually I was replying to someone who had asked if this was Minnie Ripperton's daughter..but thanks I never knew her last name!

  • Her voice is made for jazz. Did y'all hear how strong her voice got at 01:29? Wow.

  • chayil0427 You Suck! I think This song Serves well for her. This shows that she is a bit Genreless, if you will. Stop being so negative About little things that don't matter and enjoy the song.

  • chayil0427 You Suck! I think This song Serves well for her. This shows that she is a bit Genreless, if you will. Stop being so negative About little things that don't matter and enjoy the song.

  • mya is beautiful and i enjoy her music, but i don't think she has the strength in her voice for this song ... its out of her league. but she looks lovely.

  • By the way, why is the video so out-of-synch with the singing? It's distracting, though Mya looks fuckin' beautiful :D

  • I gave her a standing ovation. Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • I love it when she uses all of her 3.5 octaves. It's beautoful =)

  • OK SO I always thougth Mya could sing. But never thought she could do the 1st original form of music called Jazz this well. I would love to hear more of her doing this. The vocal is something that we are missing in today's singers.

  • (Doughnuts009)WASNT LYING

  • I knew she could sing, but not like THAT! WOW!

She does R&B-Hip-Hop nicely, but a jazz song like this would really elevate the quality of any album she releases after "Liberation". Seriously, Doughnuts009 wasn't bullshitting. :o
