Every new singer wants to modernize an already perfect song! They want to put more vocal ranges in it when they don't realize they are changing some of the best music ever made! People these days don't know what real music is.
i never knew why lena horne got all the credit for this tune, i guess it was because of the film? but it was written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler and originally sung by Ethel Waters, and THAT is a recording to hear. so painful and gloomy
mya has a beautiful voice and she did a great adaptation of this song, she's not lena horne so the way she sings it isn't supposed to sound just like the way lena horne sang it, if she had sang it just like lena horne people would've been complaining she's tryna mock lena horne, there's no pleasing some people no matter what you do, so quit whining and just enjoy mya's performance of this, if you don't like don't watch
Mya made it very sexy and bluesy but I get that she was apparently trying to make it her own while making a tribute to Lena. If they wanted a more crisp and pure voice to get the job done they should've gotten Janelle Monae.(for those who don't know her check out her song Cindi)

I thought Mya did well, but Ms. Horne's performances carry more emotional resonance. I feel like Ms. Horne's talent not only as a singer but as an actress truly informed her iconic original performance. Mya's a great singer, but I feel like she could have done more to express the longing and heartache of the song, something a great actress like Ms. Horne could truly communicate.
She was trying to sing with expression. I think she did a nice job, just nervous. Her performance is worthy. Many singers of today do not have the vocal range to sing this song "straight" and "crisp." They think "coloring" the song will make up the "gap." Alicia Keys would have "nailed" this song.
This was the best to expect from Mya. I like the idea of it, but there's a bit too many runs in it for me to enjoy. A valiant effort. I would have liked another singer to sing it though, I don't think Mya has the voice. Plus, I mean, it IS Lena Horne and all.

I have nothing against an updated version of any classic. What I don't like is the fact that, since this is a sad song, it should be sung to convey that emotion instead she smiles like "oohhh am I sexy or what?". You have the Pussycat Dolls for that. And all that wailing... What's wrong with this new generation of singers? Can't they sing without waling?
Credit to Mya though, at least she had the good taste not to yell at the top of her lungs like Beyoncé ruining "At last".
AMEN! To my dismay I discovered a version of "I Loves You Porgy" by Christina Aguilera. Needless to say it was a howling, trilling, octave spanning, self-indulgent mess. No elegance, emotion or interpretation. R.I.P. Lena, with my generations taste in music I'll sure miss you.

I mean, they take a classic, like this one, and sing it in their own style and use a bit of "sex appeal" to it, but they have NO idea what the song is about. Too much sex is involved in today's music. A song is supposed to have MEANING. Stormy Weather expresses PURE and TRUE emotion and Lena Horne did JUST that when she sang it. ONLY MISS LENA HERSELF was able to do and meant to do this song any justice. This was a struggling attempt and I hope ms horne wasnt in the audience at the time. I also hope that the performer issued a heartfelt explanation as to why the song was done like that. Good effort tho.
Check out Ella Fitzgerald's version of that song. It gives you an idea what a talented singer can do with it. Mya has no voice of her own. If she does have one, I have yet to hear it.
She pretty much destroys this song with her moaning and throat noises. I don't get why she and other singers of her generation just can't sing songs as they were written. There is a simple beauty to that song that she is unable to capture. She sings as if she is imitating Britney Spears, and I don't mean this as a complement. I think this performance was good. Mya has a great tone for jazz, and you can tell she has an ear for the idiom. The arrangement is also a great suit for Mya, even though in my opinion the tempo was a bit rushed. It doesn't bring out the same emotion that Lena Horne does, but honestly...honestly...who was expecting it too? Lena peaked when the popular idiom was jazz, and Mya's in a different era of popular music, and the crossing of this era and Lena's is the purpose of the performance.
I'd understand if it were an utter disaster of a performance, but it isn't. People just want to be harsh on it for the exercise. People need to call it for what it is, which is a decent performance.

Awful.. A masterpiece of writing such as this should be showcased as it was written. It was never, ever meant to be performed like this. Far, far too many modern singers, mostly female, feel it necessary to display their "talent" of cramming as many notes as they possibly can into each line. It's quite pathetic really, and not at all original any more. When this style of singing ceases to be fashionable, singers may then be forced to sing these beautiful songs as they were written. Can't wait !
It wouldnt be so bad if she was to tone down the oversinging that all the female singers do and if she dint sing it so happy. It is a blues song not a pop song. It needed a lot more soul. Other than that, her voice is fine. She needs singing lessons to interpret songs better. but most of them nowadays do.

I understand what Chayila0427 is saying but you still have to remember that when Lena did this song her voice was very light and feathery as well. I just wish Mya would have left that 1 run alone and really spread her range throughout the song, i felt that her voice would have been amazing on this song if she would have ventured outside of her comfort zone just a little. OK SO I always thougth Mya could sing. But never thought she could do the 1st original form of music called Jazz this well. I would love to hear more of her doing this. The vocal is something that we are missing in today's singers.

It's always difficult to judge an interpreation of a classic song like this. But Mya does her version, playfull, sexy and modern. She does it very well. But hard for the oldtiomers to understand, I'm sure.

HOLD A DAMN NOTE. Female singers in particular seem to abuse those the most. Maybe a security blanket for pitch problems?

I think this performance was good. Mya has a great tone for jazz, and you can tell she has an ear for the idiom. The arrangement is also a great suit for Mya, even though in my opinion the tempo was a bit rushed. It doesn't bring out the same emotion that Lena Horne does, but honestly...honestly...who was expecting it too? Lena peaked when the popular idiom was jazz, and Mya's in a different era of popular music, and the crossing of this era and Lena's is the purpose of the performance.

Awful.. A masterpiece of writing such as this should be showcased as it was written. It was never, ever meant to be performed like this. Far, far too many modern singers, mostly female, feel it necessary to display their "talent" of cramming as many notes as they possibly can into each line. It's quite pathetic really, and not at all original any more. When this style of singing ceases to be fashionable, singers may then be forced to sing these beautiful songs as they were written. Can't wait !

She no Lena or Etta. . . .But has noone ever heard the big band arrangements for this song?
It's supposed to be a really big and loud song in terms of band. . .And the singer is supposed to be mellow and a tad bittersweet.
And for cryin' out loud stop not all singers need to be like reality show contestants belting and screaming and doing big finales.
And Mya is amazing no matter what.

It wouldnt be so bad if she was to tone down the oversinging that all the female singers do and if she dint sing it so happy. It is a blues song not a pop song. It needed a lot more soul. Other than that, her voice is fine. She needs singing lessons to interpret songs better. but most of them nowadays do.

I love this version of the song, and frankly in my opinion this is Mya at her best, I do wish the video quality was better...I gotta say you have to search for Lena Horne on Johnny Carson-it will blow you away...judy garland's version is also heartwrenching...this song has inspired me to potentially work on a remake of the classic!!!

I didn't know Mya was so versatile. She really did a great job. I bet Lena Horne was very proud of this tribute to her greatness. She made the song sexier than it needed to e but Lena herself would do the same thing in live performances.

I understand what Chayila0427 is saying but you still have to remember that when Lena did this song her voice was very light and feathery as well. I just wish Mya would have left that 1 run alone and really spread her range throughout the song, i felt that her voice would have been amazing on this song if she would have ventured outside of her comfort zone just a little. Overall i give this a 3 out of 5 stars....
