yeh, they are two different ways of speaking, but they both go under the category of "chinese". the word Chinese can both be used to describe a type of person or a language. Just like if i were to say 'spanish', it can be used to talk about spanish person (example:"he is spanish") or the language of spanish (example:"he speaks spanish"). and i'm not tryin to pick on spanish people.
and i speak cantonese =)
