Learn the science before making a hugely inaccurate statement like "We are causing global warming". Many scientists believe the planet is cooling now and that "greenhouse gases" like CO2 are not the main cause of climate change. Certainly "we" need to move forward to a sustainable energy environment not dependent on unstable and hostile sources. Think about this---14,000 years ago the US northeast was under a mile of ice--it melted without the assistance of any human created systems.
It's funny because I hear people say this all the time "many scientists" but they never say WHICH scientists.. All the ones I hear confirm climate change is man made. You are _right_ that it does not mean that the planet will only get warmer. The effects of the climate shift are not yet 100% understood. When the polar caps melt we may indeed go into an ice age or even a mass extinction event. What we do know for sure is that it's going to cause many problems for many people.
As long as it is voluntary it is fine. Don't use the force of government to "save" the environment. Make your statement, back it up. and convince others. Using government to enforce your views on the environment may be a short cut but it leads to loss of rights for everyone.
The same could be said for national healthcare, the system of roads and public transit and many other things that are too important to leave in the hands of individuals who may not understand the importance of these works.
Oh yes, the new light bulbs that contain mercury that can poison our ground water. And I wonder how big of house she owns and how much energy she is using. But I guess it doesn't matter because I bet she has lots of "carbon credits."
Oh yeah, she's done something. She uses private jets to take the limo to the air-conditioned lecture hall so she can bitch about everyone else's oil use.
And if a talk that costs 1 trip's worth of jet fuel ends up saving millions of barrels because that conference had an effect it will have been well worth it. But again, instead of criticizing the efforts of others, would you care to show what you've done better?
Nice one, Horsey. The amount of mercury in CFLs is negligable and they can be disposed of properly. If you don't want to use them you can install Lutron dimmer switches and save more enrgy than with CFLs. As megamarsvin asked, what have you done?
Well, I leave my a/c on all the time. I leave all my lights on even when I'm not home. I throw away all plastic products (please sense the sarcasm). I purchased a car that gets 35 mpg. Anyways, you guys never addressed the issue that she pollutes way more than the average american.
What a great way to get a message out. I've been buying the reusable grocery bags and trying very hard to remember to bring them into the grocery each time. :-D But, hey, it's a start, and I figure I'm saving hundreds of plastic bags a year at the very least. The light bulbs are also an easy start. :)

Has Laurie sold her personal jet yet?

If she indeed owns a Jet she spews more noxious pollution into the air than a fleet of semi trucks every time she flies in it.
