Funny...I was in a lot of rock bands (from proggy to hard rock to jazzy/bluesy). It's funny how many guitarists I've played with were hardcore fans of Larry. Or more specifically, guitarists who mostly listened to hard rock/metal or blues/blues rock but somehow found Larry! Even have a death metal buddy who consideres Larry one of his top 2-3 favorite guitarists!
One of my very favorite songs of all time from any era or any genre. The ultimate groove topped with guitar riffing as only Larry can do it! Met him at various shows. Super approachable, as nice & down to earth a guy as you could hope to meet! He'll actually just hang out & talk w/o the 'Help me escape" look to friends/mgnmt or the constant watch staring! Saw him w/Lukather, caught both sets that night. Insanely good & fascinating seeing Luke so respectful of him! Ahhh, the day's not so bad now!
Very cool! I remember when I first heard this song in the late 80s. Smooth jazz on the radio was such a pleasure to listen to. IMHO, Larry Carlton and Earl Klugh would make an impressive high class guitar talent combo.
you don't have to play as fast as Steve vai (and I like vai so nothing against him ) in order to be virtuoso . just imagine Kid Charlemagne without Larry solo...
I recently started getting into Larry Carlton's music. I wonder why I did not starting listening to him sooner. This man is an absolutely amazing musician.
Fantabulous guitar playing! Mr. Carlton or Sir Larry is indeed one of the best guitar player of all time. He can play all types of music from pop, rock, jazz, etc. and... he's all around almost every record made during the 80's & 90's. My ultimate wish is if he could play in Manila before he retires. See you in the future IDOL Larry!
in the 70s he was the Dean of LA studio musicians playing on anything from hard rock to Middler records! My fave song by him, one of my all time faves.
At one of his shows he told me something about his wife being a singer/musician also!
His barnstorm tour with Lukater was the pinnacle of live playing. On The Pump Luke came out shredding in 1st set. So 2nd set Larry came out ripping & Luke went nuts! On Red House Larry called out 5 key changes & they just went for it. A true genius.
@newarrior3000 I know this is very late in conversation but I didn't know that happened to him. Since that's the case, he truly is a blessing to the country! For him to keep doing what he'd been doing before after something like that says volumes about him. And I dig this tune!!!
Awe..now that was Sweeeet..I am so thankful to Califfa700 for sending Larry Carlton's brilliant performance..to imagine being able to ever see that was impossible til now.. WoW how cool is that..ALEXYO678? YOU ROCK!!
Hey ALEXEY, thanks for posting all these fun Montreux videos of the great man... Happy memories! I've two questions, though: one, would you mind posting the other musicians' names besides Larry? Most of them look familiar, but I'm not sure. Is that Victor Wooten on bass?
My second question concerns the song "Smiles and Smiles To Go". I seem to remember a song that was very similar, but not entirely the same as this one. Anyone have a clue? Cheers!
Ahh..I hear this song and it seems all is right with the world :)

Guthrie Govan, Marco Sfogli, Andy Timmons, none of them can match this guy. Larry Carlton is historically the BEST guitarist ever!
