The lead singer and chorus do a great job on "When I was a lad"; I think for members of the audience hearing it for the first time it would be a great introduction to G&S. However, the poor sound quality makes the orchestral accompaniment quite distracting. I am no singer or musician, but from what I can tell looking at other performances on Youtube, the best versions are those which try to get the vocals and music as close to the original as possible.
To be honest I thought the vocals on this was one of the best recorded that I have seen on youtube yet! However, I thought the opera company's orchestral accompaniment was something to be desired. The reeded instruments were way to heavy and covered up some of the lines of the vocalist in "When I Was a Lad". . . . I don't know if this was due to the orchestra's interpretation of the work or the recording quality of the video. Other than that I thought it was a great reproduction of a classic!
Not only that, but someone needs to shoot the clarinet player! And all those added little bits that Sullivan did not write were neither necessary nor an improvement.

When I find that bassoonist, and I will, I will slap them for every whiny, pinched note they played.
